I just grinded out my rank reset for Gambit, and afterwards I ended up in a couple very interesting (albeit frustrating) matches. The enemy team was a group of four, and they used a strategy that heavily abused the catch-up mechanics.
They wouldn't deposit any motes at all, so our Primeval would be summoned at 75-0. Immediately after summoning our Primeval, we'd get invaded over and over by the same hunter with his Hammerhead. Every time they could invade, that hunter was all over us, killing us from across the map and out of range (of my weapons at least). Eventually they'd dump all their motes at once and start trying to win, and the games were close. The first time I played against them, they managed to melt their Primeval after ours was restored several times over. The second time, I focused on shutting down the hunter, and managed to get a couple of kills with my rocket launcher and my ult, but otherwise this hunter was immediately coming back with more heavy ammo and stomping our entire team from way out of range. We managed to win the second match, just barely.
I honestly don't think there should be any catch-up mechanics at all in Gambit. There should be a limit on Primeval invading, or at least a much longer cooldown in between so you don't have to put nearly all your focus on killing invaders (this is especially bad when you're not group with anybody so it's just a bunch of uncoordinated solos). I also don't think the enemy team should get any catch-up on the Primeval Slayer buff.
Gambit is meant to be a competition, there shouldn't be a handicap for the losing team, and it definitely shouldn't be a valid strategy to intentionally throw the lead just to abuse catch-up mechanics. If you fall behind, you should come back by outplaying the enemy and making impactful invades, not because the winning team was put at a disadvantage.

It's your fault for not invading when their bar was filling up and no blockers were coming over. You can win the match right there. Hammerhead is amazing in gambit, go get your own.

4 RepliesOne invasion per player, per round. Goodbye catchup mechanic. Hello strategy.

So, a couple things. First, Bungie removed all but one(?) of the bonus Primeval slayer stacks you get from the catch-up mechanic, so it is nearly useless. They might have actually removed all of them. Second, the invasion timer for the Primeval phase has already been lengthened once, and unlimited invasions during that phase has to exist or else a team can just hang out and wait out the invades before melting. Third, you get two invasions in Gambit, and three in Prime, before you summon your Primeval. If the other team is hoarding 15-20 stacks of motes, kill them. That effectively ends the game. If a team can survive all invasions with max motes, they deserve the big dump. Finally, this is a legitimate strategy to overwhelm a bank at the risk of losing it all. Either beat their invades or have successful invades yourself

Hate to be “that guy”, but giving your team the advantage then preceding to wipe your faces in the dirt isn’t a catch-up mechanic. You just got outplayed hard.
-
Yes. Unfortunately lots of ways to cheese this game mode. I don't know, why bungie insist on allowing, such frequent invades.

1 ReplyThe catchup mechanic shouldnt exist. Ive never lost to a team abusing this mechanic but its resulted in many close games that should have been landslide victories.
-
Lmao this isn’t catch up mechanics this is you. For example: if you are at 7 stacks, the other team will have 1 stack compared to having 4. And oh are blaming your inability to kill an invader MULTIPLE times (your whole team not just you), and your failure to melt a primeval. Invasions nor catch up mechanics are the issue. It’s just the speed at which you can melt primevals. You can melt one at 1 stack

Ummmmm four of you to kill one invader that was using a lmg. Your team couldn’t shut him down. Now you are here to cry about it lol
-
I don't see that as abusing a mechanic so much as a potentially risky strategy. It all hinges on the the opposing team having terrible shutting down the invader quickly. If the opposing team can keep the invader in check then they should be winning the matches handily.

I think it’s less that the strat was abusive and more that your team was collectively horrible.

U said u lost because of it? Sounds like they had a good strat
