Bungie have never topped The Taken King campaign. Most of the campaigns that come after are pathetic and probably even worse than Destiny 1's first campaign.
Most people don't really care too much about the story or campaigns at all because shooting aliens and getting that loot is much more important but (opinion) if Bungie are attempting to make a story/ campaign why make it trash?
The lore in this game is AWESOME. The Books of Sorrow, the history of the Weapons of Sorrow, The Fallen, the entire aspect of the Drifter "character." It's sad that most of the cool stuff we hear in the lore can never be experienced in game. Most of the stuff we do in game is some of the most boring stuff that goes on in the universe of Destiny.
For those that say Forsaken had an awesome story. Why? Because Cayde died. 😂 They destroyed his character all throughout the Red War and we know nothing about him from simply playing the game. For people that don't play Hunter, it adds even less of an impact. In terms of gameplay it was pathetic. Better than the other trash campaigns we have had before but still pathetic.
Shadowkeep was basically just a rip off of The Taken King. An entire mission in the Shadowkeep campaign was practically identicle to a Taken King mission. Why were the Vanguard just waiting for the Hive to build the Scarlet Keep? Practically none of it made sense. After the final cutscene I thought the raid would give us more insight but instead we get another Vex Mind that wants to do a thing. How many more Vex Minds are we gonna get till we get The Mind Mind? 😂 Seeing as Shadowkeep was an expansion and was probably still in development whilst Bungie were still with Activision I think it's fine to pass it off.
I'm expecting huge things from Destiny 3 in terms of campaign. The Drifter is by far the most interesting "character" Destiny has ever had. If he plays a miniscule role in the campaign it'll be disappointing to say the least. Bungie have a huge opportunity to make it big and memorable. Imagine fighting along side Calus' empire, The Fallen and every other Guardian to destroy the Darkness once and for all. There are so many possibilities for what Bungie can do next but I just hope they don't waste it.
All in all Destiny has some pretty lackluster campaigns. The only reason I care is because it's Bungie attempting to tell a story through a game. Bungie who are known for creating some of the best stories in Video Games ever. Campaigns are the first thing we do when a new content drop releases and I really hope the ones we get in the future are better than the ones we have already had.
