Sadly with New Light you need to actively start the campaigns yourself.

I just have no idea where to go and what to do to make that happen. People have pointed to the hangar lady (forgot her name), so I'll check that out tonight and see what happens.

Indeed. If you're only playing New Light and do not own any expansions, the order would be The Red War, Curse of Osiris and Warmind. Do note that lore wise the middle one does not contribute much

You should also be able to play the first mission of Forsaken, which chronologically should be left till after those three but can practically be done after the Red War. It should be the icon in the Tangled Shore titled 'Last Call'
