Matchmaking changes to 3v3 Survival and 3v3 Elimination

The dev team has just deployed changes to matchmaking settings for Survival, Freelance: Survival, and Labs: Elimination playlists to address feedback we've been receiving about skill mismatches. We’ll continue to monitor feedback and matchmaking data to improve these systems.

  • Man, I'm so glad I'm not the only one facing these garbage problems. In the same boat as all of you. I'm a decent player, and a good one with a solid team; but not a master by any means. The set-up for this is just flat out ridiculous. I don't mind losing at all. I even appreciate losing to players at my skill level that beat me. But I'm either matched with HORRIBLE teammates and/or EPIC opponents or a whole combination of problems like players AFK, players that run in by themselves and die over and over; or i randomly get a game when I'm the epic player (much more rare unfortunately). Shit, i don't even want to straight stomp on fools (maybe to get not forgotten heh, but after that, no). I want good, challenging games. But the system they have now is beyond broken. I just want to get to legend one more time in glory and I'll never play it again.

  • I can't believe and don't fully understand the matchmaking system. I'm 3.5k player and every other game I get matched against people with 5k+ rank. What's the definition of skill based matchmaking? I do not play like they do and definitely don't have someone in my team to carry me against those people. You should look and learn from other games that have a better way to match players against each other, for example League of Legends. Just try to fix it and balance the game please, I have lost so many friends because they got fed up with this game and its B.S.

  • People quit these crucible matches all the time because the other team feels like they are Ironman Guardians who take no damage whatsover, never die of A close range shotgun kill, can be looking somewhere else while you are shooting at them and then after some damage is finally being shown and delt, they turn around and are 800% accurate and kill you immediately! You never win a 1v1 battle, hell, you go in a battle that your teammate are already fighting and not dying and here you peak out the corner tohelp the team and you immediately die while your team has been and still is in the same area but the opposing team is always missing their shots on them except you when you just peak out the corner to help lol! Its plain obvious to me that this game works perfectly for a handful of players only and mostly all the time for players like me, it just doesn’t work appropriately! Ill play 1 game and be a beast and then i go in the next game and i forgot how to play because nothing and I mean nothing works for like 3-4 more games straight and i just end up quitting because its pointless to play when you know you already lost a battle due to BS before the battle starts! It feels like they have an advantage over you in 90% of the lobbies! And then magically, everything I do works again for 1 game! Im a decnet player too! But its just so obvios to me there is some sort advantage in lobbies for certain players or they are manipulating the network somehow because they are always like invisible to the opposing team until its too late! Even Bungie can be manipulating these lobbies! Think about it, they control each weapons aim assist, and have mods to that help aim bla bla! They probably ‘manipulate the games in a hidden way that always certain players just have these crazy ass numbers at the end of the game like if they were in every gun battle and never died in any of them! I already know when to quit a match! Even when the match is just starting! When i clearly shoot first or its a clear 1 shot shotty with the mindbenders and it barely tickles the player! I just leave and an outrage waiting to happen ! And people wonder why people quit! It just doesnt for work for people the way it works greatly for other people

      Please remove the lose 2 win streak for loss crap. It is so stupid that 1 loss basically negates your progress in high comp and effectively makes it impossible to get anywhere without going on a 10 win streak

      • Skill based matchmaking SHOULD be fantastic, but it's objectively not -blam!-ing working. I've lost 10 comp games in a row, and it seems to have nothing to do with skill. Whether my KDA is 0.5 or 5.0 (both of those have actually happened), I still manage to lose, every single time, usually because there's one player on the enemy team that's carrying everyone. Comp in this game has always been, and somehow continues to be, one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a video game.

      • The matchmaking for this game is possibly the worst experience I've ever had trying to play PvP. I've recently lost 12 survival matches in a row by getting matched with high Mythic ranked players with myself only being heroic. Most of the games have been completely one-sided with 4-0 or 4-1 if I'm lucky being the norm. I get the fact that yeah, "Git Gud" is real thing. But how is someone supposed to improve if matches end in stomps. [b]FIX THE MATCHMAKING![/b]

          Last season I was surprised to go into comp with my friend who isn't very strong in crucible with a 0.8 K/D and be matched with other low caliber players and win some matches. We even went on a 5 streak. This season we go in with 0 glory and we roll full teams with high glory and even teammates with lower glory, and my poor friend is getting rolled and we are losing even with me carrying pretty well. Is it using my ELO or something? Cause our glory was 0 starting out, but it wouldn't surprise me if my past scores dragged me into matches with sweats. I can hang with them but I feel bad for my friend. I did a 2.0 k/d through most matches but he was like 0.3 :/

          • I thought that the matchmaking was skill based? Because to me it seems like every other game I play, it's against unbroken sweatlords that outclass me in every aspect. How is this ok? I'm not a bad player, but definitely NOT unbroken material

            • I started playing d2 again in season 7 and as a pvp player went into comp, 0-3000 gory was laughable but around 4000 comp it was just one win one loss and I was convinced I was at an artificial limit as my team would win or lose based on if I was able to carry them to the win at times getting 25 elims and my team-mates having combined of less than 10 or even 5. So I stopped solo queing and found a team, I found guys around 4k and the same thing continued win or loose based on if I could perform a superhuman carry. I'm good enough to beat legend players but not a team of them. So I got frustrated and washed my hands of the whole comp playlist until shadowkeep. Not that I want to compstomp but I went on my alt which has an unruly KD of 3.5 or something and game 1 solo queue 3 unbrokens and clueless teammates. played up to 2100 and logged out and never been back in comp since. So despite having a 1.87comp kd (not kda that's over 2) on my main (2.5 ((kd)) on alt) bashing full teams of unbroken sweats all day in classic 6v6 and iron banner ALL SOLO QUEUE, I have not and probably never will reach Legend because I'm too good apparently and don't want to embrace the slimey legend community. All this to say firstly STOP PUNISHING SOLO PLAYERS in all forms of everything. This includes rewarding teams more, just stop it. It's already an advantage being on a team. I read all the posts on this thread and there are some good ideas. Lock Legend players to play only legend players for like a scarab style emblem that goes through various upgrades, is one possibility. Loosing glory when matchmaking is so unfair is why people stop playing. And the gains against loss of glory ratio lopsided and accentuates the problem. It makes it complete RNG barring superhuman carries if you will win or not and even worse rng dependant if you will put together a winstreak. And to put that into context someone admittedly better than me probably top 10 itw can solo from 0 - 5500 in 4.5 hours because they can superhuman carry. This also spills out into other gamemodes. I try and solo que in doubles and loose 75% of games because I always vs teams of 2 and my teammate is guaranteed potato who quits almost definitely after loosing 3-4 rounds (and thus the match for me and filling the super bars of the grateful opponents) without a kill, then I start winning rounds as a solo, because potato boy is not getting farmed. Laughably, the only wins I get are when my team-mate gets requeued with me and quits before the match even starts and I 1v2 the entire match and furiously T-bag the team that thought they were so good after beating me because of potato team-mate. All of this is to say its busted. What you will keep doing is punishing solo's, flog them until they leave and the game. When I load into d1 after i just cant take it anymore, I see solo's everywhere. I guess for their sins of wanting to have a personal gaming experience they are stuck in the purgatory of D1. Gosh our lives are unnaturally on show enough anyways and people will lfg when the want raid gear and so forth. I know I'm gonna get punished for being good and triple whipped for being a solo, that I can live with, but being totally unable to get legend unless join the vile ranks of the we think were so good cos we unbroken legend infestations if they would even take me comically, or ripping out all my hair carrying in solo comp, it's all so putrid. For context probably 200 flawless runs in d1 on another alt, and 12 on d2 including 4-0 on KJ hoveys team before I quit. So the solutions are as follows. 1.Scrap comp. 2.No glory for loss. 3.Gated glory loss by rank. 4.Lock Legend player to play only other Legend players. 5.Remove sbmm all together. There are probably other but why should I do your job for you. Speaking of which survival only comp is a failure(variety variety variety). The old version was better, and the normal playlists feel too diluted, WHERE IS RIFT and COMBINED ARMS the playlists feel way to serious right now. Make it so you cant blink with the rift, bring back a few good rift maps and bob is your mothers brother. Keep it real simple, rift or mayhem and clash or control in the 6v6 bracket and rumble or free for all and survival or one of the two d1 3v3 sweat modes in the other, and a special mode playlist 4v4's perhaps, all rotating weekly. I don't think I will play comp until I get what my skill deserves at the very least. Destiny as a competitive experience is just not a good model exasperated by the systems that have beleaguered it. Destiny was best when trials was cbmm way back when. People would carry anyone for free and teams of all skills above the lowest 25 percentile could have at least a decent experience. Now we have 5500 carries people cross saving to PC and eliminating the already failed project that is PC destiny. I recommend backing up to year one destiny 1 as much as possible. The game is massively encumbered by immense volumes of useless loot. Less is more, LESS IS MORE, more manageable and more interesting. Exotics mean nothing now when you get them from egg punching a dreg compared to the tears of joy over getting a ghally. Faction vendors used to be hard to level up and then you would get legendary that was not even in the visual loot pool that felt unique, now we just get the millionth better devils, and I have never even shot one. Weapons use to level up so you could feel the difference the perks made binding man and gun. The list is endless. I know the dangers involved in recapturing the past but look at fortnite chapter to, they stripped it down to barebones and it really has a new lease of life. PvP maps are bad too btw. One last thing

                • Today's report: Freelance Survival at Mythic III: 17 games played: 9 loses, 8 wins. Even though it's close to 50/50, somehow, I lost 300 glory points. Just that fact alone proves that the point system in general, and the streak system in particular, are utterly rubbish. If you can't go up keeping a 50/50 (a ratio Bungie forces artificially), then there is no point in playing at all. By the way, not a single 3-win streak in 17 games. But there is more! 5 out of those 9 loses were terrible 0-4 stomps, aka forced loses, against teams full of one-hit-killers that can't remember what primary ammunition was. Current matchmaking is either broken or rigged. I don't know which one scares me the most. I can't believe there is a matchmaking that everybody is enjoying up to 3000-4000 points and then this [b][u]NIGHTMARE[/u][/b] takes its place.

                  • This season feels strange. I always could reach mythic 2, so after everyone in my clan, that struggled to climb up to fabled before, told me how easy comp is now, i assumed i could finally reach legend. But no, no, no, its harder than ever and i am stuck at mythic 1 this time. How can that be? I am not the best player, i have a 1,3 kd, but if clanmates with a 0,6 kd can reach legend, while only using shouldercharge and being the top player in their matches, i have to question the system.

                      Been hovering around 5000 for days. What's holding me back is being punished severely for a loss. 3 to 1 win loss just to creep forward is horrible. And if you're unlucky enough to lose more than once in a row it resets hours of work. How long is it going to take before it is understood that NO ONE enjoys moving backwards in a game. You can't win them all no matter how good you are. But winning the majority of the time and still going backwards is bull. It also promotes toxicity between teammates. Hate messages because everyone is so afraid to lose they blame each other. Is that how you want this? Why not make legend in comp something like 10 or 20 thousand glory to reach? But you only progress on wins and don't go backwards. This would still make it a grind for a dedicated pvp player.

                      • I’m consistently matched with people 5200+, i understand that’ll be fairly common as I’m now 4300+, but my first game at 0 glory was like that as well. I like a challenge but cut a guy some slack.

                        • This matchmaking is the worse in the history of destiny by far. How could you get it so wrong? Start matching by glory please. At least that way, we can count on having some competent teammates. I am really trying here but I can't carry 2 people with sub 100 glory and virtually no comp experience against people that have 1000+ games in comp and are in mythic or legend. Your attempts at team balancing are terrible. Please just revert back to glory based matchmaking. This coupled with the solo playlist would be such an improvement over this terrible system you have in place.

                            Apparently, matchmaking is actually broken. As an example: I spent about a week playing survival freelance. I hit Fabled quite fast, really. But after reaching Mythic strange things started to happen. I started being matched with guys with ~50-200 Glory against veterans with 5500 (with Not Forgotten HCs). No kidding, I used Companion app to see guys' stats and this is all true. The complete nightmare began and I could not get any higher than 4000 glory. 2 wins and 1 loss leaving me even lower than I was before. I started to think that this Not Forgotten gun that makes me play comp is virtually unobtainable. There are several problems I want to point out: 1. Connection. Destiny 2 is using P2P connection which leads to COMPLETE disaster regarding to hit detection and movement. Shots don't connect, people teleporting here and there... This is what you get while playing COMPETITIVE mode. I don't even mention complete flood of cheaters in Survival. Competition should be about skill, not about how lucky or unlucky you are with people you compete against. This is what you should consider while thinking about quests implementation. Long time of dedication should be rewarded with the things players spend their time for, not with the pile of garbage to the face. This leads to my second point. 2. Reward players for their dedication. I know, everything in this game is obtainable. Anarchy, Thousand Voices, Not Forgotten... But, there is too much of a gamble. As this is a post regarding to Competitive PvP, let's talk about Not Forgotten. Like I said before, I've spent a lot of time and dedication trying to get that. There is a big BUT. Due to issues I pointed above I really lost any hope to get that and all my PvP experience led me to a complete frustration. I spent about a week of my life trying to get my first ever Legend rank to 0 success or even to negative success. So, why not changing the perspective from "probably" obtainable items to "eventually" obtainable? There was a good work with the Revoker and Randy's Throwing Knife when you have to gain certain amount of glory points but not actually getting a certain rank. Make this thing for the Not Forgotten. And there is a healthy alternative. Make Glory points gain/loss ratio more healthy. Make that we get more glory with 2:1 win ratio while not getting negative results out of that for every rank, not just for any pre-Fabled rank. Put a rank lock for every glory rank (not just Fabled, but for every major rank, Fabled II, Fabled III, Mythic I, Mythic II etc.). And, of course, fix matchmaking so players with 100-200 glory not being matched against 5000+. By rewarding people with the things they spend their time on you will actually make them like PvP considerably more.

                            • Imo people who have already achieved legend rank, or reset glory. Should not be permitted to enter a match against anyone who has not achieved legend rank. This accomplishes two things.... Firstly it ensures people trying to reach legend cannot be overwhelmed by the sheer toxic level game play that "high comp" players have made for themselves to show off on twitch and their other streams. Secondly, it prevents high tier comp players with 1000 plus games, from selling their skills to junior tier players to ensure a legend rank. High tier players are literally naming accounts 'Account Recovery" and selling themselves like online -blam!-, for Microsoft store credit, in clear violation of the EULA which states their license to bungies software may not be used for commercial purposes. Bungie is not enforcing bans on these players, who have created entire businesses just based on making high tier comp impossible for anyone who is not the most sweaty hardcore player, they have people who play comp all day, whose only purpose is to make comp too difficult for normal casual players, so they have no choice but to subscribe to twitch streamers channels for "free carries" or pay a high tier player to help them win. You want to make comp fair and obtainable, you can stop the point loss altogether, just make it a much longer grind with lower points awards . AND GET THE DAMN LEGENDARY PLAYERS OUT OF THE NON-LEGENDARY PLAYERS MATCHES!!!!
