Does Bungie just do in house testing of new DLC content or do they seek outside players for honest opinions?
Just curious how the leads on the game can get things so wrong sometimes when they say we are listening. It seems that some real players honest play opinions could save the game a lot of troublesome work.
Edit> What I am asking is does Bungie have outside people come in and play a piece of programming, not to see if it works correctly or has bugs but to see if its something the community will enjoy as a whole. Or do they just do testing internally with staff who worked on projects.
For example. COS was possibly the worst DLC in the entirety of the Destiny franchise. The loot system was all messed up, the story was childish and so easy a 5 year old could play it, the planet mercury was a big desert of nothing, and it had lots of not very well thought out but very interesting gameplay. Before the launch, Destiny devs and employees were super excited to show what they had made in house for the community. But if they had play tested the DLC with real players, they would have known long before hand that it was a big dud.
With a DLC like Forsaken, they had the expertise of Vicarious visions to work on it and also seem to have a much better understanding of what players really want. But Vicarious would have people from the outside play and critic things they work on. Bungie on the other hand doesn't seem to do that with its in house content.

Like anyone at Bungie cares to answer that.

Do you mean, survey the player community to find out if the new idea will be good? Nah! Luke has everything under control. Just read that lovely 3-part "Please feel sorry for me, I keep fucking up and costing us millions in wasted development time" crap he wrote. The one email I received from bungie that had a survey about "why I hadn't logged in for so long" didn't even work. The link was broken. I think it's safe to say they really aren't listening.

1 ReplyIt can seem like they don't play test the new content, but they do. Have to keep in mind that they only have so many people and so much time. Then when the content drops, they have around 1 million people play the content. And after an hour of the new content, there is 1 million hours played. There is no way for Bungie to test all the stuff as thoroughly as 1 million players, trying different things. 10s of millions of different combinations and different scenarios. A million different qualities of networking. 1 million different sets of eyes, and 1 million brains, processing game performance.

We do not exist, when talking to people of Bungie. Check out their twitters. It’s like a complete different world of DESTINY2.
