That said, think about this from a developer standpoint. They're trying to essentially convert Destiny 2 into a completely different experience from what it was before. Entire systems are being overhauled. They've also been (at least according to forums) hemorrhaging players. (I have no access to inside info on the matter, of course, so I can only assume at least some of the "I quit" posts are serious.) What, as a developer, do you do to try gaining player retention? Well, a lot of games have been implementing a battle pass system. Kids are intimately familiar with that system. As such, it may just be a draw for them. It's likely that by marketing a battle pass system that kids will be drawn to the game. Thus, profit.
They're also not being very scummy with the system, from what we have seen. Its primary purpose (from what information we have) is to entice players to purchase the expansions for a little extra bling, not an additional, separate purchase.
Of course, as an older gamer myself who is immediately sickened by the sight of any of the newer forms of video game monetization (I physically cringed at the first sight of the pass) this pass is hard to defend. But I think it's important that we do defend it. If nothing else, I would prefer that they just change the way it's presented somehow. It looks way too similar to the battle pass systems in other games, and if the purpose is to draw in kids then there's nothing to be done. But if not, I'd really prefer it be presented in a way that's a little less... for lack of a better word, triggering to look at. (Really, just that line of loot and the dotted line of loot right above it just... ugh. Shit gives me PTSD.)
Edit: Three comments in an hour all saying it's "guaranteed loot just for playing the game" and I'd just like to clarify that yes, that's exactly my point. I just wanted to point out that the presentation of the system is making people (myself included) reel back, and that we should all be a little more open-minded as to what exactly the purpose of the system is.
Another edit: I wish like counts could go into the negatives so I could actually see how many people disliked this tbh. And if you did dislike this because I "said the system was bad", that wasn't my point. I clickbaited ya. Heckin gottem.

9 RepliesRemember when they got caught throttling the exp gains in this exact game destiny 2 look it up they even talked about it!!!!!! Thought they might have D3 in the works, but I now know they do not and making it free to play for all and getting trickle $10 here and there on a game they own all rights to is the only way the company can stay afloat and pay the bills. This concept is going to catch huge back lash and further alienate the longtime Destiny enthusiasts, some people that will then also pay for catch up ranks will also be swindled out of their money because of throttling that they have now covered up and secured their code better to hide it from consumer, I might be thinking lawsuit is in foreseeable future not saying from me I already made my choice no more money from me, also I’m an old gamer too and remember countless hours on a $50 game and understand times change and stuff

2 RepliesIt's just another way to prey on people's fear of missing out. They even state as much. "To solve for how our community plays Destiny, we’re planning to allow Season Ranks to be purchased as a catch-up mechanic late in the season." "We know that sometimes life gets in the way, and you just want to get the last few rewards before the season ends and everything resets. In the same way that we’ve been doing seasonal catch-up for Power, we think providing a late-in-the-season rank catch up makes sense. " BDF as usual happy to be treated as nothing more than potential wallets.

1 ReplyIf you think that's a bad idea wait until you find out the raid loot are reskins and the actual raid looking gear is locked behind eververse lol

1 ReplyI just don’t like the whole idea of the battle pass system I wished the effort went towards a new activity instead of a basically idle rank up system. Personally, I think things should be rewarded for doing a *difficult activity* not just a long boring repetitive grind. Such as Lima’s howl and not forgotten, scaled with difficulty, although the repetitiveness and boringness of the quest could be solved by actually balancing pvp. But Idk if that made sense I was just saying rewards should be given for completion of difficult activities not long Grindy ones

I don’t understand what’s so bad with getting an extra way to earn [guaranteed] loot. Heck, you don’t even need to buy anything to access it. F2P players can stay as they are and still play the season AND earn loot from the free track. They are getting FREE loot. And if you bought Shadowkeep (which includes Season 8) then you automatically get the premium track. Extra loot from just playing the game.

6 RepliesI think we should just wait to see how good or bad it is.. No need to criticize the crap when we don't actually have access to it yet.

Luke Smith is making y’all write whole ass paragraphs on this shit

3 RepliesHow do I explain this? 1. The whole thing about this season pass loot progress is designed to bring a much needed quality of life to the leveling up system. Right now, we only get a bright engram with each level up. Soon, you will get more loot with each rank up, and access to a very few (two as far as we are concerned, only 1 locked to having the season pass) exotics. Most of the loot you get without the season pass is much the same, with a few small exceptions. Namely, the exotic bow is the one thing for sure locked behind having the annual pass/ season 8 pass. But you still have to do a quest for it. 2. I don't like having to pay for extra stuff as much as the next guy. It would be nice if DLC would be free. Sadly, people have to make money, costs keep going up, and life is life, what are you going to do but try and live? My only issue is people who get intimidated by the price tag. It's nice to have new blood in the community, but the fact that money keeps people who would like to play the game out is disheartening. The best I can do is buy it for my friends. 3. The buying thing won't affect most players who put in a few hours a week. It's meant for those people who just don't have enough time but to do a few things that require a bit more time. Of course, they will be late to the party if they buy the season ranks. People will have completed whatever quest is associated with the bow by then, and will be sitting on a healthy supply of materials. The people who buy levels will only get what they have brought, but since they haven't earned anything themselves, the amount will be meager. People who have been playing will have an advantage as well, it's not even a pay to win with that statement out of the way. 4. As much as it pains me to say it, we already have locked content to people who paid extra for the dlc, just that in the case of Forsaken, people already brought the game as well. With New Light, the game is free. Examples of exotics that require the annual pass for Forsaken include but is not limited to: Jottun, Izangis, Le Monarch, Anarchy, Tarrahbah. The amount of legendaries is quite high as well. A good chunk of the game is now available though for the New Light version. And if someone likes the content, they can dish out the dough to play whatever content is in the current season. I think the season ranks system, and the premium version that comes with having the pass for the current season, are both incentives to play the game more, as well as reward you for playing the game and leveling up like you already do. I certainly don't feel all that rewarded or excited to get bright engrams from leveling up. Now, I'll probably have a more consistent source of various supplies. And glimmer. I understand people frustrations with it seeming like there is more money required and such. But I think being able to buy which seasons you like is a nice touch, and getting more loot for my efforts is also nice. We get mad at a lot of things as a community, but sometimes we jump the gun a bit too often, and don't quite realize how good (or bad) a feature might be. I might be wrong in all I said. And I'll just have to accept that. Just my two cents on it. I think there's a bit much of negativity in the forums lately.

Garuanteed loot....for playing... is a bad thing??

13 RepliesYep. I get that going F2P means they need to make more money, but throwing us this battle pass to entice us to pay for the season pass is not the way to go about it. There's already a dozen F2P games with nearly identical battle pass systems, can we please get a game that does something different?
-
1 ReplyNo we don all agree. The Shadowkeep design plans are very positive and exciting.

It's guaranteed loot...just for playing... You all find a way to hate everything lol

5 RepliesI’m all for it if they stop supporting PC players. Catering to those kinds have ruined the game since the destiny 1 beta

5 RepliesGood post - and this older gamer concurs.. Quick thing re the 'guaranteed loot just for playing the game' - as some seem to use as a justification.. isn't , you know, that the damn basis of the game? That you should get loot for playing the game - not because you bought 'a' pass? I'm sad to say that, for me, I'm getting more and more skeptical with the franchise..

8 RepliesEdited by BattosaiXslayer: 9/1/2019 4:04:46 PM"Guaranteed loot" is a bs reason. Take the example they gave, running strikes for an hour. They could tune strike rewards to give basically what 1 rank of the battlepass will give (I guarantee some ranks will reward plant mats)! Say the reward for 1 rank is 50 mats, and they said a strike takes 18 minutes, make each strike drop 17 mats (17×3=51), then you get 51 mats in 54 minutes plus load times (round that up to an hour to be generous) There are other ways to make general gameplay more rewarding without monetizing the game further. If people are having fun and feeling rewarded, then they'll be more likely to purchase the seasons. They shouldn't have to purchase the seasons to be adequately rewarded in a looter shooter. Edit: And do you really think that this whole "pay to catch up" thing is just some innocent experiment? They're trying to push the envelope and see how pay to win they can make the game before there is a community outrage the level of battlefront 2. Maybe I'm being a little cynical on that last point, but a little caution never hurts

8 RepliesThe system hasn't even been implemented into the release version of the game how can it be bad? If after the first season it is a failure then a full review can be concluded but until that point no actual reviews can be made
-
2 RepliesWhat's a 'battle pass'? Every post criticizing the new seasonal rewards system is using this as a comparison but (as usual) provide zero information on what the compared 'thing' is.
-
1 ReplyI definitely got worried at first. But really I see it as extra content. I’ll get it eventually. Might take a few weeks but I can just get stuff without really trying. So if I want to grind some strikes and hang out. I can, which sounds great to me. Although, if your a D1 vet, turn you know that destiny was the first to have a battle pass. Remember the triumph book that gave you rewards as you completed xp and challenges? The worlds first battle pass came from Destiny 1. Confirmed. Well not exactly, but it’s close. I just think it’s funny that they had something so similar, almost 3 years ago. Way before any of this fortnite bullcrap.
-
2 RepliesHow about we go back to the Record Book system from D1?
-
1 ReplyYes, the battle pass is clearly yet another scam, but the dumb blind fanboys will literally defend anything from this company, hence the rapid downvotes you got. They want to live in a bubble, plugging their ears and yelling ‘La la la la la I can’t hear you!’ shutting off all valid criticism Instead of being men enough to call out these garbage devs for their lazy, half-assed, recycled, greedy antics.

Edited by W33DEDPLAGUE: 9/1/2019 11:22:01 PMI must be in the minority then. Do I think it's some great idea that is really gonna benefit me? No, but the deal is, Destiny is trying to draw in new players by going free to play. Those players won't buy an expansion until they DO play the game and find that they enjoy it. The premium pass is included with the content purchase and is only there as extra incentive for free players to purchase content. As long as there is still plenty of loot to be earned in activites, I see absolutely no problem with it. If it stays free with the content purchases, us guys who have always bought the content are basically getting a direct path to some loot, which is something a lot of people have wanted for a long time. Many people complain about RNG in the game, but then complain that some loot isn't dropping from activities now. It's the typical Destiny community, the "grass is always greener" community we have always had. Its being blown way out of proportion, as usual, and a lot of people are even misunderstanding the fact that it isnt in addition to, but included with the purchase of the content drops. Like i said, the only concern I would have, is if there is a severe lack of loot that drops from the activities in the game itself. That doesnt seem to be the case, but if it is, then yes, that's a bad thing. If the community could just be patient enough to see the changes in action, before pulling out the torches and pitchforks, they might see it's not such a bad thing. Humans are emotional creatures though and tend to have immediate reactions based on those emotions rather than being patient and getting all the information first, and our community is no different. It will be fine. The annual pass had exclusive exotics, activites, and other loot already. We literally have the same thing, just a different format now. I even see people calling it pay to win as if people who play the free version of the game should be given all the same loot and content as players who actually purchase the content. Not only does that not make sense, it's not how This game has ever worked...if you didnt buy the content drop, you didnt get the content. If anything, free players are getting a bonus here by getting some pf these items anyway, regardless of whether it takes longer or not. People judge off of past experience and what they have seen from other games is an extra charge and benefit simply from buying the pass. This is not the same thing and people will see that when Shadowkeep releases.

We should pay $1 to sign in like theme parks.
