This is a AAA title. How in the world does it not have dedicated servers? This needs to have happened like yesterday. The inherent problems with getting poor matchmaking into asia while being from the US or the issues it causes with desync in Competitive is crazy.
So you took the cheap way and went with peer-to-peer networking. How do you justify exposing everybody's IP address in a lobby where its obvious that anytime there is a competitive community rampant cheating will occur.
Your lead producer says hes a major WoW fan. Where was he during the Wotlk, Cata era when the arena scene was DDOS'ing each other because Skype exposed your IP? The entire reason Discord was founded.. but here we are in Destiny: No dedicated servers and massive security vulnerabilities.

P2P is a big F u from bungie to custumers. his company is a joke

I sympathize with your frustration, something people could learn to do more often given we're all just wanting what's best for the game. I quit Destiny 2 a couple months ago for this reason, raid jacket on order like I was really into it and this one issue making PVP comp unplayable on PC was enough to get me to refund shadowkeep and find something else. I think that was 3-4 months ago I'd have to check my posts but just checking to see if anything has been done or said, something to make me go ok it's gonna be fixed for shadowkeep launch, comp is moving to dedicated etc. So I can buy the game and get back into it again but of course nothing. Crazy to think the amount of money people spend on gaming computers, to play PvP on p2p servers it's like buying a Lambo to Uber with, just, mind-blowingly staggering how bad of a business decision this has been. Well as you were, see y'all in the next dedicated server forum post 3-4 months from now.

The game matches by region first. If you're in Kansas and playing someone from Asia it is because a) you're in a fireteam hosted by someone there or b) they're in a fireteam hosted by someone in your region.
So you took the cheap way and went with peer-to-peer networking. How do you justify exposing everybody's IP address in a lobby where its obvious that anytime there is a competitive community rampant cheating will occur.
Cost vs feasibility. Dedicated servers are very expressive and since the next thing you bring up is WoW, are you willing to pay $15 a month to play Destiny?
Your lead producer says hes a major WoW fan. Where was he during the Wotlk, Cata era when the arena scene was DDOS'ing each other because Skype exposed your IP? The entire reason Discord was founded..
What the AF does Skype/Discord have to do with game servers and everyone was using ventrilo back then, not Skype.
but here we are in Destiny: No dedicated servers and massive security vulnerabilities.
That are way over-complained about and most people crying lag-switching, etc are just pissy about losing and need something other than themselves to blame. One last thing. If the game has dedicated servers and you live in New York and you're playing with a friend who lives in Arizona, if they are the host, you're going to be playing on a West Coast server and have higher latency than the players in the region. In which case I fully expect you would be right back here on the forums writing "how dare Bungie" create a system where you are disadvantaged by having higher latency.

I don't care what they do or don't have.... there IS a problem. I expect to lose when playing against guys that are better than me, however what really pisses me off, is when my bullets count for next to nothing. This problem does NOT occur all the time and therefore there must be a issue whatever it is. TTK in PVP is way inconsistent.... this is what they need to fix yesterday!

OP may have the technical facts wrong but the spirit of his/her post is still valid. Destiny has always had awful latency problems.

3 RepliesEdited by Motorhead England: 8/31/2019 12:53:40 PMI think this topic is the most discussed issue since the dawn of time, and just by reading the posts regularly it's blatantly obvious something isn't right with PvP and never will be. Lots of comments are negative (including my own) and there's always replies that seem to think PvP is fine and it's the players fault that they are having a bad time, either blaming their abilities or the loadouts they use, or their connections etc, and the most often answer is to watch videos, practice and improve. This may help with strategy but not with the basic flaws. I have played Destiny since day 1, and have put in thousands of hours and watched hundreds of hours of videos. I use the techniques, I use the god roll weapons and armour, but realistically expect to lose some games...no one can win every time. But some do, and that is unnatural, and I put it down to the rewards and the lengths humans will go to to get those rewards. This is a video game yet people are being exploited and paying real cash just to get their hands on pinnacle weapons, and others resort to cheating and manipulating the mechanics and go unpunished. I say scrap all rewards from PvP. No glory ranking, no pinnacle weapons, nothing. Just a leaderboard so all the sweaty try-hard narcissists can battle it out however they like, just to see their glorious names at the top of a trivial list

Dedicated servers won't solve all the problems in pvp. This game mode is so broken. They have to build it from the ground up. And shadowkeep is not going to fix it

There is a solution it’s called Stadia.

92 RepliesEdited by s: 8/31/2019 1:34:29 PMUh, you realize even d1 had dedicated servers... right? Have you even looked at their very public networking model? You realize your IP address can be revealed even with dedicated servers... You want to complain about security vulnerabilities related to denial of service, buy a vpn. There is your middle man to take the hit for you. As an edit: Their networking model is not great for PvP but it wasnt designed for pvp... My main point is that people (you included) need to educate themselves on the situation before complaining. Evidently clarification is necessary for all the kiddos who have no idea what a dedicated server actually is. Most people define dedicated servers as pure server authority models with 0 client interaction, when in reality a dedicated server is an instance running some component of the replication model for a game to distribute information to clients. Destiny has always had server authority for mission and public space logic, and Destiny 2 has server hosted physics, meaning the clients are only authoritative for things like their position and abilities (per bungie themselves). This is due to a design pillar of wanting the game to feel like a solo experience everywhere. Client authority in this game means minimal rubber-banding and quick and responsive abilities and weapons. To clarify on the rest of the post, most games that have pure server authority have subsystems outside of gamestate replication that do in fact share your IP address with other clients. VOIP is the most common reason, but there are plenty of others. The only pure solution to securing your IP address is setting up a proxy between your home connection and the game. That's it. So sick and tired of people ranting about things they haven't put any research or time into. Its just annoying to see all of these ridiculous arguments with 0 factual basis being the top of the forums. If you want to argue about the network model, at least learn the network model before you complain and then complain about the actual problems with their system instead of crying 'DEDICATED SERVER'.

1 ReplyNeed both dedicated servers and region locking

1 ReplyThere will never be dedicated servers. Accept it. Pvp in destiny will always be inconsistent.

3 RepliesThey messed with the matchmaking system and now I am seeing a lot of games load in that are 3v6, 4v6, 4v4, and even 2v6 in quick play. And no the lobby wasn’t full and nobody left while it was loading. It just loaded the game like that. You know how when someone leaves there is a little square where their super icon was on your hud? Well no squares just no players loaded it and the enemy team is often all solos. Why make it 3v6 why not balance the teams.

1 ReplyI will say I was playing Gambit the other day, and this was very strange, a guy invaded, and just as he was engaging my team did this weird teleporting movement, and it never happened again. Whether he was lagging or switching doesn't matter to me, what does, is if there are connectivity issues, whether now or in D3 they start addressing these things.

Edited by Wilsoc: 9/1/2019 8:18:38 AMThat’s the main reason I don’t enjoy PvP in destiny, I lag out every 3 matches or so(not over exaggerating) due to it being p2p. I almost never lag in other games such as Overwatch, because they have dedicated servers.
You’ve been disconnected from the game world. Error code: BEE
2 RepliesShould've been sorted about 6 months into destiny 1 but these money grabbers wouldn't want to cut into their profits now would they.
-
I agree. This is unacceptable in 2019. I’ll pay more if that’s what it takes. Once I buy shadowkeep I’ll have spent $300 and some change on this game. Not complaining about that, I’ve got my moneys worth. But if even a fraction of the player base has spent the same. Money shouldn’t be an issue.

8 RepliesGame is gonna fail as a free to play with no dedicated servers.

3 Repliesyou would think with the amount of money the made from us with d1 and all the dlc and eververse sales d2 and all the dlc and eververse sales dedicated servers would be around by now
