I haven’t seen anyone talking about this yet, but as some of you may know DDoSing is kind of a problem in Destiny especially on PC. A lot of people that play crucible, specifically comp, use VPNs now though which makes it a lot harder to be hit offline since the IP shown in the “grabbing” software is not actually yours.
However, Destiny 2 is coming to steam soon. Steam strictly does not allow you to use a VPN. It is against their Steam subscriber agreement, section 3A.
You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, Valve may terminate your access to your Account.
So suddenly, everyone that uses a VPN to avoid getting DDoSed is subject to an account ban. This is kind of a really big problem. A lot of big games on steam have dedicated servers and the only use of a VPN is exploiting the geographical relocation, but Destiny does not so not being able to run a VPN anymore to disguise your IP is very bad.
You have the choice: Play crucible, again specifically comp, knowing that anybody you match can have your internet offline in a matter of seconds using two free and easy to use pieces of software, or have your account banned.
I would really like to hear what bungie has to say about this.

5 RepliesYou're not going to get banned for using a vpn. I've been using one for years with steam. The only reason people get banned is because they use a vpn to circumvent geo locked game keys, which are usually purchased illegally anyway.

7 RepliesHow to I use vpn on ps4? If anyone could give me some tips.

Using a VPN on D2... You know thats adds to the already terrible latency between you and the other clients making you appear laggy for everyone else... I can understand being concerned about privacy and DDOS attacks but most people using VPN's in games are up to something they dont want to get caught for so thats why most companies ban the use of them. I do think with the move to steam and the new f2p model Destiny needs to do something about aimbots and DDOS attacks maybe they need to look into cheatguards or somethings. -
3 RepliesIt’s for purchases, not playing. Section 3A, right? Section 3 is titled “BILLING, PAYMENT AND OTHER SUBSCRIPTIONS”
-
It’s not that you can’t use a vpn while playing games, because you can and plenty of people have. You can’t use a vpn when making purchases.
-
22 RepliesAwwwe, No longer going to be able to cheat your way to 5,500. Better start working on your skills son.

it's against the rules specifically fork those people who set up accounts in countries where they can pay less for games. I've used a VPN when connecting to steam many times.
-
It says: "to disguise the place of your residence". I treat it like this: as long as your VPN server is in the same country/state, this section is not applicable at all. Not to mention that this section is in the "Billing, payment and other subscriptions" part, so it means you're not allowed to use VPN to buy/play games/content that isn't available in your region, but if you only use it to connect to game servers you'll be fine. But yes, it would be good to have an additional clarification from Bungie on that topic.
-
2 RepliesBunch of 🤡 at bungie don’t expect them to improve matchmaking or network shit, they would rather make new 150 sparrows and call it a dlc
-
At least they can cross save and play on another system and still VPN. But yes, this seems like an issue.
-
It's not allow you to use vpn in they store page to buy game on low price country and active or even trade for someone in high price country, that's they counter measure for they own economy, not something affect your gameplay. Many mmo on steam are lock region to US and EU,... and people in asia or small region still used VPN to played them all day lol. If you get banned by that, that simply those MMO publisher does not allow you to play their game with it, not steam.

So no geofilters either?

22 RepliesI've been playing this game on PC since it became free to play and not once have I ever experienced a DDoS. You people just love over exaggerating problems, don't you?
-
2 RepliesWhat can they do? Oh I know! They can just get rid of comp and that'll fix the problem! Wait...
-
Yeah! How the -blam!- am I suppose to cheese my stats safely?
-
Is there region lock on steam? I heard there wasn't but im not on pc.
-
Damn didn’t even occur to me.
-
1 ReplyThat's terrible. Can you bypass that restriction by using a VPN router without Steam knowing? I have Steam and a ton of games, but I can't even remember the last time I played a single game on Steam, except for F.T.L. because I love that game, despite how punishing it is. ;) I'd hate to lose access to my Steam library just because I'm using a VPN to play D2 because of all the DDoSers.
-
3 Repliesyou can use vpn while playing/not when purchasing games
-
If it's a Steam policy, Bungie has no say in it.
-
8 RepliesThis a large post, that probably could have been avoided if you even did the most rudimentary research. 1. It's Steam's Policy, Not Bungie's 2. The policy is designed to get around region locks, evade taxes, international laws, ect... 3. No one is getting banned on Steam for using VPN just to play 4. DDoS attacks are criminal acts. If someone, or a group of someones is dedicated to doing this, there is little that can be done outside of reporting them. (or dedicated servers to mitigate, which isn't happening anytime soon)
-
1 ReplyUmmmm... Context is key here buddy. This section is in regards to purchasing content/subscriptions. It's so that people living in the EU can't dodge VAT taxes as well as prevent circumventing geolocked games. Valve could care less if you use one while actually playing.
-
Very good post!

1 ReplyEdited by GenXer: 8/21/2019 12:11:50 PMFunny, I would think that a lot of the people using network exploits to cheat would also be on a VPN to hide their true location. Perhaps, some of the problem will go away once ported to Steam. I guess that depends on how fiercely Steam enforce their policy.
