Where do Ghosts go during combat?

So in Gameplay of Destiny, our Ghosts disappear while we are out shootin' enemies of the city, slaying gods, and generally doing our thing. They only reappear in cutscenes and when we pull them out to access Nav Mode. They appear and reappear with a unique effect that (correct if I'm wrong) is different from the basic transmat effect seen on materializing Guardians and sparrows. Since D1, I always assumed they just merged with Guardians' Light, hiding within them. But then we went to Nessus, and on Nessus there were two lines of dialogue that shook me up. First, Failsafe says that Ghost hides in The Guardian's backpack while they do all the work. At first, I thought this was a joke line from an A.I. that didn't fully comprehend Light. But in the Exodus Crash strike, if Ghost is damaged by Ark energy he comments that "It's scary outside your backpack." This confused me. Never once does a Guardian wear a backpack. Some armor has ammo pouches or satchels, but not all. So, what is it? Where exactly do Ghosts hide while Guardians do their thing?
