Can Throwing Knives Receive a Buff in PvP? Not a OHK

Throwing knives in D1 were great. I feel like, where they are now, serve little purpose. Yes you can throw one before someone peeks a corner or use one if you run out of ammo but, they just don't hold up to the other classes melee abilities. There is no reason to even use a throwing knife in most engagements because you won't be able to do enough damage and finish a player off with the knife before your opponent closes the gap with a shotgun. Here are the damage numbers (collected from spreadsheet listed below): D1 Precision Knife Crit: 158 Body: 120 D2 Precision Knife Crit: 118 Body: 91 Explosive Knife Crit: 107 Body: 101 Knife Fan (assuming all knives connect) Crit: 177 Body: 144 Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nmjhpdoUUDCaMZxTq3JXeFXmTSXEmQQFEBerF_nWJ3E/edit#gid=1743079636 Precision knives should do around 140 crit and 110 body. Explosive knives should do around 120 crit and 110 body with slightly more damage/range for the AoE. Knife fan should stay where it is at as I feel they are effective already.
I don't want them to OHK. They didn't in D1 (with the exception of Kephri's Sting) and they shouldn't in D2.
Sidenote: I would not be opposed to a buff to other ranged melee attacks such as Ball Lightning or Throwing Hammers. IMO Ball Lightning should get a slight buff to do 120ish damage on direct hit. Throwing hammers should do around 110. Reasoning for the lower damage with Throwing Hammers is because the hammers have slight tracking, have almost no arc, and can be picked up.

Minor correction: Throwing knives in Destiny 1 originally did 158 precision damage but got nerfed to 142 in the June update to prevent Incendiary Knife from OHKing Guardians at 5 Armor or less. Anyway as a firm believer in Throwing Knife Crit+Handcannon Crit=Kill they should be bumped to 130. Don't really like the idea of Precision "baby's first HC" Frames being able to do the combo so 130 only lets it work on 0 resilience Guardians.

    • It just needs to one shot to the head, its not that easy to pull off anyways so I don’t see why its an issue. Hunters use a charge when using it anyways and its not like its spam able unlike shoulder charge.

      • I definitely agree with not having it a OHK because of that very generous hit box

      • Yes but warlocks need to have there "punch" buffed in speed to be equal to others, and there range need to be brought back if hunters get that buff and since titans already have that stupid ohk and speed

See, this is a post I can get behind. There's reasoning, actual suggestions for numbers and it's not something controversial. The only thing I would change is the body damage on the normal precision knife. The body damage should be where it is at 90, but scale up. 110 on body is just a bit much to swallow but I understand why you suggest it. If I may be so bold I'd say it should work like this: Precision knife: 150 head 101 body Explosive knife: 30 damage on body shot, 90 on explosion 40 on precision hit, 90 on explosion This feels like a more reasonable tweak in my eyes. Explosive knife grants better all around benefits but has a lower potential damage ceiling. This paired with the delay for the damage will give the precision knife an advantage in speed and damage.

        • And I want to be able to bind separate keys to melee and melee skill (knife throw, smoke bomb etc.). When I need to melee someone quickly, the smoke bomb activates instead. WTF?!

          • I feel like the bottom tree Gunslinger should get some bump in its aim assist

            • Exactly. I just want my Throwing Knives to be like they were in D1. They weren’t OP but they were very deadly if you got good with them. I don’t even bother using my throwing knives anymore in D2. I only use it to be flashy, not because I actually want to use it.

            • Maybe around 150 but not a one hit, they have good tracking at times then bad at others. But a well place shot then a follow up knife play would be acceptable. Titan main btw

              • Oh yes give another reason to play hunters over warlocks and titans. "titans shoulder charge OP rrreeeee". You barely charge with it and can get out of its range in 2 steps and you have shotguns as secondary weapons. Even a OHK only to the head that is way more powerful than any charge due to the sheer range alone.

                • Eh, I feel like 100 damage is enough. It's a quick burst to take out the enemy in a pinch, but shouldn't be an opener to an engagement. Then again, I have a very defensive plays style, so how I use my knifes differ from others

Considering the precision throwing knife only exists on bottom tree gunslinger, you know the one you only get 3 shots with, and also considering the fact that shoulder charge is on most subclass on titan with the exception on “cough” bottom tree striker it’s not that much to ask for a ohk using one of the weakest well actually in my opinion most balanced supers in the game. It’s a precision knife make it precision with no aim assist or tracking but make it one hit to the head. Should look like a Boeing knife;) Edit:sorry forgot to mention the warlocks grenade is a ohk and it’s on multiple trees. So no real need for any buff other then maybe warlocks could use the range like it used to with its melee

                    • I think they need a speed buff. They move so slowly you can’t hit anyone outside of shotgun range anyway.

                    • There is only one buff needed for knifes - activating by press and hold. I never saw most stupid way for ability activation. I reject to believe this isn’t bug. 95% of the time I am trowing my knifes by mistake.

                      • Nothing really needs a buff. The problem with hunters is the inability to make a viable build. Shards got destroyed but nothing to make it worth it. Someone recommended that per hit/kill with the knive it generates super energy. Hunters lack synergy and viable options outside of stomps and foetracer.
