Edit: Sorry I forgot that the coming of the Kell of Kells was foretold by House Rain, not created by other Kells.
The prophecy of the Kell of Kells basically states that a Fallen will come along who will unite all Fallen under a single banner. Over the years multiple Fallen have believed themselves to be the Kell of Kells, most notably Skolas and Variks. But of course, there is really no such thing. The ‘prophecy’ was created by the Kells of the large Fallen houses to keeps the lower ranks in check, as it proliferated the idea that any Fallen, even a lowly Dreg, could rise to the top of Fallen society.
The American Dream at first seems completely different, as it’s definitely not about uniting all of the USA (that’s what the U in USA means). But at its core, the American Dream is actually very similar. It too proposes the idea that anyone can rise to the top, albeit through hard work, not because of a prophecy. However, the American Dream shares something else with the Kell of Kells, it’s also not achievable.
At first, this conclusion may seem preposterous. You may say, “Well look at Bill Gates, he made billions by selling computers from his garage! And besides, Dregs are treated incredibly poorly, often only being given just enough Ether so that they don’t starve. No such oppression of those lower on the socio-economic scale could ever exist in the US!”. In response, I would say a few things; “1) I agree, Bill Gates is an example, but can you name any others? I bet you can’t, and even if you can, 5 or 10 out of ~327 million isn’t great odds. Also Bill Gates is white and male. 2) Whilst it’s true the US doesn’t starve it’s citizens (a low bar), it does limit their futures in other ways. For example, huge student loans and a lack of universal healthcare and good labour laws all make it much harder for the average ‘dreg off the street’ to rise to the top. In fact, the vast majority of the wealthiest people in America inherited their money, something I’m sure it was very difficult for them to do.
At this point, you can probably see the valuable purpose the American Dream plays in American society. By positing that if anyone works hard enough they can make it, it implies that anyone who hasn’t made it, is lazy (despite the obvious fact that the game is rigged against them). It also encourages people to act against their own best interests (and in the interests of those richer than them), on the incredibly small off-chance that they do become rich. The best example of this is the precarious nature of the Estate Tax. If you’re cynic, you can choose to believe that this ideal was put in place by elites to protect themselves from the masses, much like the Kell of Kells was put in place by the Kells. But I leave that for you to decide.
Put simply, the American Dream is a narrative (a demonstrably false one) that subdues the public and keeps them under the thumb of those that are wealthier, in exactly the same way as the Kell of Kells does.
Bungie, if this was intentional, bravo, because that is an extraordinary piece of meta social commentary. If not, then try to weedle some in. This was really interesting to write.
P.S. I did exaggerate the state of the USA, but it’s true we could do more to create a level starting point.

3 RepliesHouse Rain gave this prophecy not long before The Whirlwind. It's purpose, like the American Dream, is to give hope to The Eliksni. That there will come a time where The Fallen shall rise again and unite as they did before. There are three current contenders. Eramis, Variks, and Mithrax. Two of which will involve conflict...the latter leans heavily to uniting with Humanity. The most likely one to lead and succeed is Mithrax. Eramis wants to go back to Pirate Fallen ways. Variks wants Fallen to rise back to their old glory days...but will kill us. Mithrax wants to unite with Humanity so Eliksni can survive and live in peace.

I appreciate your unique comparison of the Kell of Kell prophecy to the American Dream. I do feel that you are missing one large point about the American Dream, the fact that the American Dream is not a current "belief". By this I mean the American Dream is a phrase coined in 1931 and is very different from what you are describing the American Dream to mean. The accepted definition of the American Dream in its original state is to say anyone who is in the USA (born or immigrant) can work hard and earn a good life, a good life at the time was to simply be able to own your own house, feed your family well, and be happy doing it. This a very different picture verses the what you described. I understand that the idea of the American Dream has changed over the decades, however it has always been about being able to easily make ends meet not to become part of the 1% as you so described it. The American Dream is not about becoming wealthy it is about the ability to overcome the daily hardships of the commoner while still being a commoner. It is unfortunate that you did not mention the "Death of the Middle Class". Also the whole issue of student loans and universal healthcare (USA does have some healthcare for the less fortunate that is payed by the Middle class) is more of a problem to do with the fact of the over blotted state of Capitalism in the Western world and less to do with the state of the USA's government (yes, the government in theory could help resolve this problem but they are having to much trouble dealing with their own internal squabbling to truly resolve the economy's issues). I can tell that you feel very strongly about these topics (as should anyone who actually cares about the state of their country), but please do not misinterpret my words as being adversarial. I am just trying to set you straight on the topic that you are using as a comparison. (please don't believe what mass media says they are filled with more yellow journalism and misinformed preachers than ever before) Also the Kell of Kells prophecy is about giving the Eliksni hope; however, I interpret it as more of a 'the coming of the messiah' prophecy and less of a 'anyone can be king' ideology.

I think you mean the star catcher, the whole "I am a marvel with ten thousand arms" prophecy. I just really hope Variks isn't a villian, Mithrax is looking like the Kell of Kells but honestly back in D1 Variks deserved it imo

Edited by Dark Raven 2501: 8/10/2019 12:48:52 AMThe prophecy was for told before the collapse and far as I know it hasn’t come to pass. I do agree that there has been a lot to claim themselves as kell of kells but they have been all fakes ..... if it does happen there will be two outcomes from it one the fallen will declare all out war on us guardians and the city or two that both parties will agree to a piece agreement to end The conflict between fallen and humans
