Anybody who is a regular in Gambit knows the whole game hinges on invading. In Prime, the first invasion will usually determine the whole match. Regular, similar, but there is some wiggle room for both teams.
Invasions are the reason the mode is inherently a snowball/pendulum mode. It is the reason why, even when you are far ahead, there is no saftey net for victory, which frustrates everyone who has experienced this. Likewise, it is also the reason why people get frustrated at those who leave when they are so far behind, because the odds actually aren't impossible, but they look awful.
Overall, rarely is this mode an actual tug-of-war as the developers would like it. Instead it is a, we crushed you in the beginning, now you catch up, and depending on invasions, the outcome will be determined, mode.
Right now invasions pose absolutely no risk to the invader. They don't kill anyone? Fine, you wasted their time instead. Kill 4 people and make them lose 25 motes? Well, now the game will turn into that example I described above. Invasions need to change dramtically for this mode to see significant balance adjustments. The introduction of Prime did not change invasions in any way except by making them more frequent, which actually lead to greater snowball effects than in regular matches.
My proposal, at least to start, is pretty standard. The invader needs to drop motes upon death. Lots of motes. 15 to be precise. This will incorporate risk to the reward.
Kill three and make them lose 20, then die? You just gave them back 15. Die without killing anyone? You just gave them 15 for free. This, at the very least, gives the defending team a chance to mitigate any extreme losses, minimizing snowballing, or at the worst, it just creates the situations we have already, it allows one team to continue to snowball.
I would like to hear everyone's thoughts, and I sincerely hope Bungie pays attention.
