I just don't like having to cycle through every element over and over, and it sucks that it's the same button used to interact with NPCs/objects/etc, so you can accidentally switch elements. My suggestion is, when you hold reload an overlay pops up showing left for solar, down for void, and right for arc on the d-pad--you just hold reload and press one of those directions to switch directly between elements.
