Finding "balance" in a sea of varying opinions...

I'll use PvP as an example. In the Halo days restricted loadouts were a matter of software and hardware restrictions. That said, there was absolute parity in everything except player connections. With Destiny, Bungie sought to allow for far more customization in armor and weapons. Since then we, as a community, have been sending mixed messages. Less special. Less heavy. Less supers. This brought criticisms about making the game a COD clone and robbing the game of the "space magic" that made it a fun alternative to traditional shooters. So invariably the call was answered and now we have issues with never ending special ammo, constant supers, and an overabundance of heavy ammo. What makes it difficult is that there are a significant amount of guardians that differ in opinion as to which is the proper path forward. Everybody says they want "balance" but most just want the meta to be shifted in their direction. Competitive modes are another example. People want pinnacle weapons and activities to chase the best gear. Others think pinnacle quests should only reward cosmetic markers that demonstrate supremacy in a mode without giving a competitive edge. The response is predictable. "What's the point of a looter/shooter without high tier loot." It was once thought that pure RNG was the answer, but people complained when the guy at the bottom of the match with a .11 KD seemed to always end up scoring a Gjallarhorn. I guess what I am getting at is that I have learned to just accept that "balance" is incredibly hard to achieve in a diverse community. Not giving Bungie a pass, but I have just resigned myself to the fact that sometimes the meta giveth and the sometimes the meta taketh away.

The messages aren't mixed. You're dealing with two radically different parts of the player base, who want radically different things from the experience of playing this game. The problem is that Bungie is trying to please both...and it simply can't be done. One part wants this game to be the spiritual successor to Halo...and to play like an augmented mobility shooter. Ala Titanfall or Titanfall 2. The other wants this game to play like an MMO/looter-shooter hybrid...that just happens to have really awesome feeling game play feel and mechanics. The fact is that the game's sandbox can't serve---and please----both halfs of the player base. Because one----as you said---wants the game scrubbed its space magic, and sanitized of the power differences between weapons and class abiltieis. They want a Halo-style game of "balance". The other want POWER-FANTASY. They want space magic, supers, and powerful weapons of all kinds. IN addition to a power-pyramid where some weapons and abilities are more powerful than others. Because that drives the urge to chase after weapons and armor. Unless Bungie is willing to seperate the PVP and PVE sandboxes....this game will never be able to satisfy both factions. So Bungie needs to PICK ONE....and go forward with them. Hopefully the housecleaning at Bungie----and people like Weisnewski, Harmick and others who championed that Destiny-as-competitive-shooter game vision leaving the company-----is a sign of things to come.
