Marathon-Themed... Theme...

Okay, I've been thinking of completely customizing my Powerbook. I want to make everything I see relate to Marathon. Boot screen, appearance theme, icons, sounds, background, screensaver, the whole works. I've got a ton of ideas and pictures ready to put into action. It's intended to resemble a Marathon/Durandal terminal. However... being the novice I am, I don't know exactly what to do. So I'm looking for some help learning. What I need is this: [*]Some way to extract individual sounds from the Marathon games. [*]Tutorials on how to change the bootup graphics and appearance themes. [*]A way to alter the clock so that it uses this format: dd.mm.yyyy.hh.mm (24-hour) [*]Either a Mac version of that Marathon screensaver or a way to make my own. [*]Perhaps a way to show the boot screen text like in Windows... and then add a header and footer. Okay, so my idea is to have it startup like you activating a terminal. First the sound *bing* and then you see the Durandal logon screen. Where it normally reads "Opening Connection to ß.4.5-23" it will have a simple flashing "Opening Connection...". The Durandal_1707 logo will be in the middle with my name beneath it. Then I want it to open up the boot screen text stuff. At the top it should read ***INCOMING MESSAGE*** display the text and then read ***END MESSAGE***. It loads the desktop which will look like a terminal. Black and green with some of the red/maroon highlighting at the top. I've got to go, but I'll edit this with some more details. But can anyone help so far?

 •
Posted by: Reiginko I don't know anything about that sort of thing, but I would think the only way to use the teleport effect on the screen would be with some wacky use of Quartz. Which I think requires some real computer smarts. I hope you're confident in yourself! :)
Confident? Oh, I'm confident... no one said it had to be justified though...

 • I'm trying to get the Boot Screen and Shut Down sequence to emulate Terminal logon and logout, so I'm going to use the respective sounds... if I can find them. As for the Teleport Out, it isn't really necessary, but if I can find it and apply it to the whole screen, then I can use some sort of video transition thing to recreate the sequence.

 •
Posted by: Ender To save the files, you just open the sound or shape file you want, and select the picture or sound. For pictures, you can then go to the shapes menu and say either Export to Photoshop or Export to PICT. For sounds, go to the sound menu as choose Save as System 7 Sound. Or for either shapes or sounds, you can copy and paste them into image/audio editing programs. PS. Does anyone know how I can extrect the teleport out sequence to apply it to my shut down screen? It's located in the Physics models, but doesn't have an associated shape...
wow... that will take a little gui work... and no, not really. Although if you want a good shut down sound, the insane bob laugh/scream is really good.. Although you can probably capture a video clip of a teleport sequence from Marathon (use snapz or something) and have that play at the shutdown.

 • You still haven't explained how you save files using Anvil... ResEdit is easy, just start it up and open up any file you're interested in.

 •
Posted by: Reiginko
Posted by: Ender Ahahahahahahahaha! I just figured out how to use Anvil! I love the bloody thing. I can open any shape or sound from M2 and Infinity (I haven't tried M1) and export it into a file that can be openable outside of the program! It's perfect. Although I am having a bit of trouble figuring out how to get the terminal pictures. Anyone know how I can get those?
Cripes, Ender, how could you not think of this?![/qu ote] I did think of that. However, I figured that the Terminals were... uh... wait... I had a good reason for wanting to open them in Anvil... I think that I wanted to use different parts of the terminals and I couldn't do that with the MSP's HTML terminals. I think. Maybe. And I didn't use ResEdit because I was too lazy to read the manual... [Edited on 2/6/2006]

 • Or, you could just open up the Map and Images files with ResEdit.

I saw a Halo motion tracker clock somewhere. I could try to do the same for the Marathon motion tracker and make a widget out of it... but that seems too... bleh, I don't know. If anyone has any interesting ideas on what I should put in the theme, let me know. There's things like the shield bar that I think I can use for loading bars and the like, and I want new innovative ideas.

 • Sorry about this double-post... Okay, if I open the Infinity Sounds file with Anvil, I can save individual sounds as System 7 Sound files, right? Since I'm working on OS X, is there any way to use these System 7 files, or do I need some sort of converter?

 • I've never used ResEdit, but I will check it out. As for the music, I'm going to use the M1A1 soundtrack MP3s and the files on Craig Hardgrove's site. I downloaded ThemePark, and I think it will work beautifully for my purposes.

 • I'm sure you know about ResEdit, but for if you don't... Download ResEdit Download ResEdit pdf I'm told bad things can happen if you make mistakes....so don't go anywhere near your Hard Drive with it! For if you're too lazy to use the exploder - http://uk.geocities.com/marathonofficer/marathon.html Anvil has the sound effects for M2 and M∞. How's the customisation going?

 • Hmm...I'll ask my dad about some of those, but this should help you get that terminal login window when you turn on your computer. Ok, when you make your screensaver your best bet would be http://www.goodbrush.com which is Craig Mullins' website. You can get the Marathon Music Exploder here but it only seems to work for Marathon (One). [Edited on 2/3/2006]

 • I found a program for OS X called ThemePark that seems like it might be what I'm looking for. It costs about $20, but I'll see if my friend Mike has it...

 • I edited the "Mac OS 9 is starting up" picture on my Mac, with ResEdit. It worked pretty well, but uh, it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Yeah, on OSX you can customise the screensaver with your own pictures AND you can make it so it doesn't do a slow zoom, cross fade, etc. That's the only thing I know about there. I did this on both my PC and my Mac, to have the Marathon terminal screen pop up when I leave it for long enough. It was cool. Hmm. I might try something like this myself. If I find out how to customise it a lot, I'll tell you. Nice site too, Reigi. -TGP-

 • Yikes. You've got some pretty hard-core aims here. I can help you out with the screensaver - just make a new folder, dump a whole lot of Marathon images into it, then (this is assuming you're running OS X here), open System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver (it's in the Personal Section) -> Screen Saver. Then scroll down the list on the left to "Choose Folder...", select the folder you dumped the pictures in. Then you can change the basic effects, like whether you want it to zoom, pan, cross-fade, etc, by clicking "Options". As for the other stuff, it's way out of my league. I remember I tried to customise the start up pic on my old Blueberry iMac on OS 9 using ResEdit, and failed miserably. The extent of my h4>

 •
Posted by: Dark Wolf00 Well, for the sounds, I guess you could go here to download them.
Isn't that just the individual Shapes file? It's not going to look entitely like the Terminal group theme. That really does hurt the eyes. This will be less... what's the word... prevalent? Anyway, there isn't going to be green everything everywhere. I've got some interesting ideas for the format.

 • That would be awesome... although your eyes might hurt after a while. Think 'Terminal' group theme.
