In this video you will see me use the melee ability over 30 times, showcasing how I use its extended range and proximity detonation to my advantage.
I decided to make a video on this ability because I couldn’t remember the last time that someone actually killed me with ball lightning, thus creating the need to show people how to use it.
**BALL LIGHTNING HAS PROXIMITY DETONATION**
If your opponent is standing behind an obstacle, shoot your melee ability above the obstacle (above your opponents head) and it will rain down lightning on them. This is showcased in the first clip.
**IT CAN DO A TOTAL OF 70 + 31 DAMAGE**
70 damage comes from the lightning proximity detonation. You can do an additional 31 damage if it is aimed and hit directly on the body.
**PAIRS EXTREMELY WELL WITH GETAWAY ARTIST**
I play with 3 grenade mods and no melee mods. This is more than enough to constantly keep Pikachu up by my side. This exotic gauntlet lets me play aggressively with an SMG, which nets me more kills, and in turn, more Ionic Traces to charge my grenade and melee. Also, the extra damage output from Pikachu lets me use Ball Lightning earlier in an engagement and more confidently. I don’t currently play with any melee mods but could add at least one, as I felt that some of my engagements needed my melee ability but I didn’t always have it up. I don’t feel the need for any super mods (currently have two) as Chaos Reach is a shutdown super that is very situational and also gets charged with Ionic Traces. Some people like to use the super aggressively, but I prefer to use it as a shutdown super.
Ball Lightning also pairs well with Karnstein Armlets and Claws of Ahamkara, but I don’t have enough testing on the two to give more comments. For now though, I like Getaway Artist because of the extra damage output I get from it, as well as the extra stress it puts on my opponent when I push on them.
**STURM / DRANG**
Overcharged Sturm does 163 to the head. Ball Lightning or your grenade can finish them off if they go behind cover. This is a fantastic setup, although I’d have a lot more success with it if sidearms were slightly easier to use with a mouse. Their ttk is good, but ease of use relative to an SMG or a shotgun is not comparable.
**THE EXTENDED RANGE CAN CREATE SOME VERY CREATIVE PLAYS**
It’s range is what throws people off because they don’t expect it. (Almost) Instant 101 damage if it a direct hit, and 70 damage if they are behind cover. The video shows me using it in many creative ways if you are looking for inspiration.
**FINAL THOUGHTS**
It’s a fantastic melee ability, but underused mostly because Chaos Reach is a more difficult super to use and because the player population is mostly playing Hunter and Titan (true fact.)
The build that I mentioned (with Getaway Artist) is very powerful though, and I highly recommend you try it out! The super can shutdown Spectral Blades and most Titans, and the neutral game has a very powerful grenade and melee ability. You can become a real pest in the crucible!
