Is The World Of Destiny A Multiverse?

From a gameplay perspective? Definitely not. However, from a meta, lore-oriented perspective, it might be. Consider this: Given that there are a couple million players (not to mention in-universe Guardians), the chances of a single guardian (or six) defeating Atheon, Crota, Oryx, Aksis, Ghaul, Panoptes, Xol, Riven, and everyone else are astronomically low, not to mention in only five years. Therefore, I thought of the idea that perhaps Destiny is a multiverse. Millions of parallel universes stacked on top of one another. Essentially, every single copy of Destiny equals one universe. All of these universes are >99% identical, except for one detail: in each multiverse, the "Hero of the Red War" is always a different person. In each of our versions of the game, you are the one who slayed all our foes. Not anyone else, just you. For the sake of the argument (although it would be a terrible business plan), imagine if this is how Destiny played out. For each of the enemies listed above, that final boss and it's mission/raid would be available. However, once a single fireteam cleared that mission, the mission would never be available again. Again, bad gameplay model, but in a lore sense, that would be the answer for a single shared universe. The theory of the multiverse is supported not only by the continuous availability of story missions, but also the pure fact that there are millions of Guardians all doing the same activities. And from their linear, in-game perspective. Nobody else will ever do those activities except them. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

There are more reasonable theories compared to next, but the current ideologies at play all revolve around just what you put above. Multiple fireteams doing just that. Secondly, the lore concepts, in reality, are pretty straightforward if you've ever explored D&D. Specifically, a place called the City of Doors or Sigil. Here is an easy enough explanation for it. Guardians are a manifestation of light which voluntarily go to where both good and bad exist for loot, renown, etc.. For lore enthusiasts like myself? You can learn the entire universe guidebook by simply playing D&D and learning about planes, planeswalkers, alignments, rituals (hive), and lots of subjects. The groundwork is at play here, but the idea of parallel universes stacked up like that isn't really supported. Reasons why is because the various worlds themselves are not getting younger or older. Even though many years have traversed us in the Destiny timeline (combined space travel alone puts us out there pretty good and in D1 they spoke regarding things which occurred 400 years prior, etc...) Lore-wise too? The answers are both defined and questionable. It is one thing to accept reason where it can be accepted, but it is quite another not to questions the reason further. This is why Chronicler titles aren't just for show. Being able to tell the differences in the chronologies is important and ideal to not just mark the timelines accurately, but also to show the evolutionary path. I like the idea of a multiverse, but just remember one thing about those: Multiverses means multiple combatants on the enemy side and further that it is occurring at an event of death. So for all the darkness enemies which need to keep coming back? You aren't at millions. You would be pressed to find 1.00 x 10n where n is the number (in power metrics of course) of deaths we have died, they have died, they have lived (escaped after an encounter), and where we left an encounter. Please note that word: and. At the end. Because the logic of the situation is not as set-in-stone as people want to believe.

  • This is already a fact. There is only one hero of the red war. Everyone else is just another guardian. However, sometimes the other guardians completing a raid or something like Niobe labs is still canon as not your guardian, unless you do it. It’s kind of up to you. Fun fact: any time you die in a darkness zone, your guardian is canonically dead for good. Respawning is a new timeline.

    • The multiverse theory is already kinda explored in either a ghost story or D1 grimoire I believe. It talks about how the explanation for our continuous resurrection is that our ghost could be pulling us from other reality’s once the previous incarnation dies, or that our ghosts pluck us from a point in time before we die. Good theory though.
