Get rid of BLACKOUT!

Title speaks for itself. It simply isn't a fun or challenging game modifier. Instead it makes encounters annoying and frustrating where deaths aren't caused by a lack of skill, rather a cheap one hit kill from a boss that does a huge AoE attack. It is fine in strikes and lower end PvE activities, but once it starts popping up all the time in endgame activities, especially matchmade ones (reckoning) where coordination is impossible, it becomes really tedious. VVV I needed to make an edit because some people did not understand my point. VVV Blackout is fine in normal PvE activities - Strikes, Nightfalls etc. I'm pretty sure everyone agrees with this. But blackout is seriously horrible in when you are forced into melee range. Examples include darkblade reckoning, Riposte and The Hunted. These scenarios are extremely difficult to complete, let alone trying to do that with randoms. An actual challenge comes from the variety and complexity of game mechanics, not modifiers.

  • BUFF BLACKOUT!!! Enemies should be able to kill you just by farting in your general direction! not serious

    • If it wasn’t challenging people wouldn’t complain about it, don’t you think?

      • They need to adjust the area in which those slams kill players its already a given one shot but the reach is just way too far you don't even have to be close and that stupid shit kills you

I’m fine with blackout removing radar, the melee damage is just too much for me. Getting killed in one hit because of a thrall that spawned behind me is dumb.

          • When I joined the LFG for a heroic menagerie (we didn't even coordinate what class to be) on release day, we all saw Iron and Blackout. So we thought about the encounters for Menagerie and realized that, of all of them, the only problem that is going to appear is Riposte and Hunted. Riposte, we decided, was going to be split into three teams of two. Two people were designated shield breakers, while the other two teams did adds/boss dps as needed. Shield breakers would go in, do two lights followed by a heavy attack, then fall back. Hunted was literally just mowing down the knights before they could get to the lanterns. --- Reckoning..lets talk about reckoning. The only two times I see this ever happening is during the Bridge of Folly encounter, as well as the encounter against the two knights as part of the final encounter rotation. The solution to blackout on the Bridge is simple: Don't all be looking in one direction. You've played the game mode enough to know that the big yellow bar bosses spawn on both sides of 4/6 the plates. Even with just randoms from matchmaking, you can move accordingly to kill them before they get close enough to stomp/melee. As for the Knights encounter, the people getting killed during the DPS phase on the knights are greedy. Toss down a healing rift (I find well of radiance doesn't really work here because you get the chance to use it once/maybe twice for only half the time) and watch as the knights get closer to you. After a certain point, abandon the rift and move on. You're not gonna pull some crazy clutch move where you manage to kill them both when they're not even 50% health. If you're all gathered together watching as the knights charge you and melee all of the team in one-hit kill, that's on you. Blackout is annoying, but it's certainly not impossible. You know the maps and the encounters for these activities. Take the 30 seconds you need to think about how to go about it, then execute. It's not hard.

            • Anything with large enemies you have to get close to or like hordes or thrall, modifiers like that are just stupid. Not fun, just frustrating.

                • I wouldn't go so far as to remove it from the game but I do think it comes up too frequently. Usually it's just an annoyance but there are certain activities where it becomes so stupid I'd just avoid it where I can. I haven't tried Heroic Menagerie (I expect it to be pretty awful) yet so the best/worst example I know is Reckoning Tier 3 with the Knights: "stand here for dps buff, go on, try to hurt us... but if you do stand here we will instakill you with our ridiculously long-range, multi-directional, goes-through-solid-pillars melee weapon... and there are 2 of us so f*** your Well...oh, and you best hurry up because the timer is about to run out." If that's your idea of fun, have at it but, like I said, it just comes up too frequently in the activity rotations.

                  • I think it should be removed entirely. It’s not a well designed mechanic.

                  • I find blackout to be more annoying than hard. I like to be tested and enjoy working to improve my skills, however I don't like being annoyed.

                    • its cheap and more punishing than difficult. honestly a number of the mechanics in this game feel like Bungie had no idea what to do and just slapped something in. Blackout and the universal stomp bullshit are key examples

                    • Blackout should only remove radar, not give enemies extra melee damage. There, fixed.

                        • I don't mind modifiers What I do mind is the bad combinations you can get with modifiers. Sometimes you can get a good challenging modifier role but sometimes there are ones that are completely impossible to complete imo at least. I'm looking at you D1 Wretched Eye....

                          • StrawbeeMilk You make some valid points and i agree that eververse must be removed from this game but, Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold

It’s annoying but it’s not that bad. Just turn around every once in a while. You should’ve done most of the activities enough by now to know spawn locations and timing. If you played D1 you know it could be much worse. The sound of a Stealth vandal still makes me tense up.

                              • Here's my issue....we've been here and heard all of this stuff before. "Irritating", "Cheap", "Artificial Difficulty", what does that remind you of? Its literally the same exact stuff that was being said about Zero Hour with the timer. I didn't understand he complaints then, and I don't get it now either. Like, what else should they do to make high-level endgame content more challenging? Whatever they do, people complain for them to get rid of. I haven't seen a post on this thread dictating what should be done to make it more difficult, which again is a direct mirror of the Zero Hour complaints. People are complaining about having to go into melee range to kill something with blackout on...thats the point. Its saying "Hey, this seems impossible to do...so go ahead, and figure out a way to do it, because it can be done". This kind of logic has been used in games for a long, long time. If you look at something like the boss fights of Assassins Creed Origins, they do a similar thing. Instead of asking them to remove the challenge, I feel like we should focus on coming up with a strategy to beat it. That's what makes you better in the long run.
