Seriously, I have been wondering this since I first played the level. Although I think I only saw one or two. And the friend I was playing with said there was no spartan there when I was trying to show him.
Now, when I just played there is much much more. I believe I counted six. I went out on a limb and checked my medals in my medal chest. I have six "Seek and Destroy" medals. Do you think killing Bobs spawn dead spartan bodies?
A long stretch, I know. And even if not, why are they there? I mean, it's campaign. Bungie definitely put them there for a reason. Why...?

I only saw 1 dead MARINE. It was not a Spartan, but I haven't killed any BOBs. I think it's just for the effect, though. I mean, it's gonna be the fall of Reach, of course there's gonna be dead bodies lyin' around.

cos somebody killed them.
Posted by: BIG CRAIG G I think this was an act of symbolism. I say this cuz Bungie is telling you that all other Spartans have failed in saving the planet, you are not gonna be the "chosen one"
Symbolism, that's my impression from it.

They're not Spartan-IIs. The Spartan-IIs all received very uniform "green-and-mean" MJOLNIR Mark V armor, while the Spartan-III Commando teams skilled enough to receive the armor got specific variations depending on their skills or preferences. Therefore, the bodies are dead Spartan-IIIs. Noble Team IS larger than the team we're given in the game; there's Thom, who died, and then there's Emile's replacement, whom Ackerson was going to place on Noble Team in case of an Insurrectionist encounter. Maybe it's the dead remainder of Noble Team. Or another secret Spartan-III strike team. Or it could be symbolic; I have counted the number of bodies a few times, and if I'm accurate, it's seven. Symbolic of Bungie's last Halo game and of Spartan-B312's final resting place, amongst his brothers, as a Spartan, not a lone wolf. In other words, who knows? There are a few good theories, but there are no definitive answers, hinting to me that it's only of the most subtle importance anyways.
Posted by: Kev618 just a glimpse of different armor combos in the game....kinda cool too since they are random....
Is this why there were random helmets in the ending?

Considering most of Spartan IIs used a base Mark V without modifications or different colours... They where all either S-IIIs commandos, or Spartan IIs like Grey Team or Black Team... [Edited on 10.04.2010 4:38 PM PDT]

I never killed the Bobs or w/e the hell they are, and there's always 9 dead Spartans every time I play that mission :/
-
I think Bungie just added them to make the level that much more intense. Imagine, around you are a bunch of dead spartans, your comrades. You are the last one left on reach. The last one left. Thats what I think. There could be something else but personally I think its for dramatization purposes.

The remaining SPARTAN-IIs on Reach? I'm not so sure too.
