Basically software, a program that in which games are made. Tools for making the game.
For example take the DECIMA engine. It was created by Guerrilla Games for the purpose of making “Horizon Zero Dawn”. The game world, characters, mechanics were all made using DECIMA. After the game was completed and shipped, they still had DECIMA. One engine is not limited to making only one type of game. For example, DECIMA is now used by Hideo Kojima to make Death Stranding, which is a different type of game then Horizon Zero Dawn.
tl;dr: A game engine is software used for making videogames.
Just think of it as a box 🧰 with tools 🛠. If I license Unreal for example Epic lets me borrow tools they’ve made to make games. If I make my own engine I need to make the tools from scratch. The benefits being I can tailor creat tools to help make the specific game I want to make.
Middleware is the same concept like Speed Tree for instance is licensed and used for foliage n stuff.
Bungie uses a proprietary game engine and I think always has. Although I’m sure they do use licensed middleware and third party software (photoshop, Miya etc.) as well.
Hope that made sense :)
