So this is a question I've been asking myself since curse of Osiris (may that DLC burn in hell), specifically the web comic that came out with it. Now I'm sure I don't have to remind the lore community that CoO absolutely retconned a lot of pre-established lore, but out of everything that was changed there was one that still bothers me to this day
The Speaker in the web comic doesn't act like the Speaker we met in D1 AT ALL!
Now originally I thought that the Speaker in the comic was a different character entirely from the one we met in D1, as previously I believed that the title of Speaker was something passed down from one Guardian to another. But as I was going through some old Grimoire cards I found one where the Speaker was writing a letter to Osiris. In the letter he apologized about how he acted and asked for forgiveness and word from Saint-14.
This would mean that the Speaker in the comic was the same one we've known all these years, but how can that be? The comic portrays him as a lier, an egotistical maniac, and a power hungry politician. Does that really sound like the Speaker to you?
Honestly this just reminds me why I don't consider the comics canon, it makes the story way easier to fallow when you don't have to worry about random plot points/holes that aren't even mentioned in game

I’ve always thought that he was the same, and simply came to change with age and reflect on his past. Don’t forget that he also exiled Toland on similar grounds, and ridiculed the ideas of Ulan-Tan, only to take them as his own after Ulan-Tan had died and proof of his theories had been presented. He doesn’t exactly have a great history in dealing with dissenting opinions.

There have been multiple speakers in the Destiny timeline, just like there have been multiple popes in real life.
-
It’s a different speaker (probably) as the one in the Zavala trailer was there at the early days of the city, so I would presume that was the first one. A scannable says there have been multiple speakers. I’m assuming the mask and title has simply been passed down. The speaker in the comic would have to be the same, as hinted at by the grimoire card you found. Maybe he was having a bad week?

I'm considering the CoO comics non-canon.

First of all. Don’t forget that the comics take placecenturies prior. Many people can change who they are within their lifetime. The speaker had many times as many years to do this change that can occur for most people in a couple of years.
also we know that the comics were written in the perspective of Ikora. It is possible that, due to her connection to Osiris, had exaggerated some of the details
*wut web comics*

Simple. The Speaker has always been the same. That web comic was fanfiction created by Brother Vance.
-
It’s been hundreds of years before we wake up. Maybe he chilled out?
-
It’s the same person. I’m pretty sure the Speaker has always been kind of a turd ever since we met him in D1. He’s a turd because he’s a charlatan.
-
I agree that it was the same Speaker. I understand his behavior in the comics. The Cult of Osiris was a serious issue that threatened the stability and peace of the City, and Osiris was neglecting his duties as the Commander and feeding the fire of the Cult without care. It was a very difficult situation.

He lived that long because he is one of the risen. And I’m sure you are aware people can change over time. But ultimately your trying to make sense of something that is senseless. There is a disconnect between the people that wrote the comics and the lore. Besides Bungie retcons all the time, the speaker and his storyline was done dirty

We’ve never got on the speaker’s bad side so who knows. No doubt he was younger too and calmed down with age. Stuff to consider
