I've been following the lore and backstory of the Destiny universe since started playing Destiny 1 in 2015. And since then, so many questions have been answered, and yet more remain. And as we get closer to the next chapter of Destiny 2, I can't help but wonder if some older questions have been skipped over, either by chance or if I missed a detail or two. So what I'm asking from my fellow lore nerds is this: How much do we already know and still don't know about the Fallens main source of nourishment: the gas known as Ether? I humbly await the possible answers below.

Edited by Bumblebee793: 6/17/2019 2:35:44 PMI see a lot of people calling it a gas. But what about the ether seeds consumable in d1? I think it's a plant that they need to survive and a servitor can just synthesize it. But than how can we breathe it in? Does the plant create the gas like our plants breathe out oxygen?

It is a substance that is synthesized by Servitors. It is also a singular source of sustenance. Making it their peak technological innovation during their Golden Age. Which is why the technology to generate it is so highly coveted and revered in their culture. That it affects them so strongly would imply it is Traveler based technology. Altering them physically and mentally into something greater then their base form. Humanity doesn’t seem to have gone down the “super food” route. The Hardy cards made it seem like some, if not all, of humanity was simpler affected by some effort on the Travelers part. It forced an evolution on us nearly instantly. It’s powerful and considering the growth factor, possibly semi paracausal, given the tech age the Fallen were in at their peak.

Based on what I know. Ether is like oxygen to us. I have to assume their old home planet had an ether atmosphere and since we don’t, hence ether masks. Another thing could be that it is some kind of drug that the whole Fallen race got addicted too. One last idea is that ether is a source of nourishment alongside food and more ether is what lets Fallen grow and stuff. Keep in mind this is all speculation and could be true or not.

i know it comes out of fallen through their necks when i snipe their heads off

There’s not..much to know lol. It’s a gas. It’s the Eliksni’s main source of life. Servitors create it. It can be corrupted, leading to Scorn. That’s about all there is to know

18 RepliesEdited by Grays_KS27: 6/14/2019 8:46:56 PMEther is a gas that the Eliksni need to survive, produced by the Ether cores inside Servitors. It also helps them grow, and the size of an Eliksni directly correlates with how much Ether they consume. The inside of an Eliksni’s body is extremely pressurized (at least at the head), so the head explodes if it’s pierced. Humans and Awoken cannot breathe Ether, and would suffocate if trapped in a room filled with Ether. Ether does not cause brain damage (this was revealed by Failsafe), so there’s no harm if a human or Awoken breathes it in. But lack of oxygen would cause brain damage and kill a person, so only breathing Ether is a bad idea. Because the Eliksni need Ether to survive, we can assume that it contains something that their bodies need (like nutrients or certain elements). Other than that, Ether really is just a gas. If it contains something like nutrients for the Eliksni, that would explain why it causes growth in Eliksni bodies. We don’t know how Servitors produce Ether, or how the Eliksni survived before they invented Servitors. Servitors are simply highly-advanced AI created by the Eliksni. Because of the melee attack that large Servitors use (where they drain/absorb you), we can guess that Servitors produce Ether by absorbing some form of energy or matter (possibly only organic matter, but the large amount of time some Eliksni have spent isolated in space makes this unlikely). We know that the Eliksni farmed crops. It’s possible that Ether (or the stuff the Eliksni needed to survive) was originally produced by some plants/crops on the Eliksni home world (like how Earth plants produce oxygen), and that these crops were farmed by the Eliksni. https://www.ishtar-collective.net/cards/mystery-the-vault-of-glass?highlight=Pink Edit:
It’s most likely that Ether is simply the air of the Eliksni home world. We know that the Eliksni ruled over many worlds (or “many stars”), so it’s likely that Servitors were invented to produce Ether so that the Eliksni could survive when offworld. This theory also makes the most sense, because it’s the only way we can explain the Eliksni existing. If Ether wasn’t already naturally occurring in the air of their planet, it would have been impossible for a species to evolve that depends on breathing Ether. If this theory is true, then the crops the Eliksni grew were for something else (for example, the crops could have produced something used to make clothes, like cotton). This theory potentially contradicts other lore which seems to describe Ether as being something other than the air of their home world. This theory could also imply that the Eliksni only needed to breathe the air of their home world to survive, which is pretty insane (it’s possible, like with plants, but also very bizarre to imagine in an animal).
1 ReplyIts basically eco from Jack and daxter.

I heard a theory once that claimed that ether made up the atmosphere of the fallen home planet.
