Hi! I'm just getting into Destiny and I have to be honest, the biggest pull for me was the world and lore behind the game. Now that I'm finally playing the game though, I have no idea where to start exploring the lore. Is there any advice you loremasters could give me on where to start my trek into the world of Destiny?

Edited by H1vac: 6/15/2019 9:47:52 PMIn the beginning, there was light. And it was good. There was also darkness. And it was edgy. The light trapped the main prophets of the darkness on a planet. Same timeline, different galaxy. Man appeared. Humanity timeline up to space colonisation. Back to the darkness. The Books of Sorrow would be a great place to start. Timeline pending.. pending... Ah yes, I refer you to this link: https://www.ishtar-collective.net/timeline.

Depends if you have Destiny 1 or not. Like the other guys have said, start by going through the old Destiny Grimorie cards from wherever you can still find them. If you just have Destiny 2, I would recommend starting small by looking through all of the exotics and check out their lore tabs by clicking and holding the left trigger if you play on Xbox. I would also recommend the YouTuber known as MyNameIsByf, he has been on the scoop of Destinys lore since the loot caves of Old Russia. If you can't find some of the lore cards you need, he and he's vids will set you on the right track.

1 ReplyEdited by Sturm with no Drang: 6/12/2019 12:25:49 AMTo be frank, you’d want to start off with the lore you can find from Destiny 1 as you see most of its continuity following into D2. Ishtar Collective seems to be the only actual database available nowadays that has all of the D1 lore packed into it so you’d be better off starting there. I highly recommend reading the Book of Sorrow lore from The Taken King as it forms the basis of just what the Hive, and by extension the Taken, actually are, albeit scary bug/shadow people who have a penchant for punching and screaming at you in the face. No better place than to start at the beginning of their origins. As far as Cabal Lore goes, that is a subject better understood in Destiny 2 since the only real thing we can understand is a Cabal Incursion just ends up on Mars in D1. In D2, we find out way more about them, either through Ghaul and the Red Legion or through Emperor Calus and his past before being banished from Torobatl, the capital of the Cabal homeworld. And with the Vex...well, they’re pretty much all over the place with no set point of origin given how they’ve managed to cement themselves throughout the system and time itself. You’ll definitely want to look up on the Ishtar Collective to have ease in reading up on them, but from there you might find the Vault of Glass on Venus to be a pretty interesting subject. The same could be said for the Fallen as their history and lore was pretty deeply bound in the old D1 Grimoire. Aside from looking over all of the Fallen Houses, you’d probably get a better understanding of how their hierarchy works if you read over the House of Wolves and the Reef Wars. All of that aside, there is no one best place to get started, regardless if you’re new to Destiny or a Veteran looking to earn a right as a Loremaster. All you can do is just find a spot and dive right into the ocean that is Destiny.

4 RepliesYes, indeed. It is called Lothric, where the transitory lands of the Lords of Cinder converge. In venturing north, the pilgrims discover the truth of the old words: "The fire fades and the lords go without thrones." When the link of the fire is threatened, the bell tolls, unearthing the old Lords of Cinders from their graves... Aldrich, Saint of the Deep... Farron's Undead Legion, the Abyss Watchers... And the reclusive lord of the Profaned Capital, Yhorm the Giant... Only, in truth... the Lords will abandon their thrones... And the Unkindled will rise. Nameless, accursed Undead, unfit even to be cinder. And so it is, that ash seeketh embers.

Start with the Collapse and anything earth/guardian related, it won’t be soon until you get to our generation and understand. Key thing to look out for is Six Fronts, Twilight Gap, etc. If you plan on looking for Hive the books of sorrow and the rise of the Taken King

Edited by A Living Breathing Cinnamo: 6/13/2019 12:56:12 PMIf you are just getting into lore, I’d recommend picking a very basic and simple area to cover first, then spiral from there. For example: Start by reading about the three classes. The Titan lore talks about the Battle of Six Fronts? Go read about that. Oh, it was the Fallen who attacked the City? Congratulations, you’re now reading about Fallen. In the Fallen lore there’s a lot of references to different Houses, which came together during the battle of Twilight Gap. Now you’re learning about the Twilight Gap and how Skolas “betrayed” the Fallen. But he didn’t really betray them- The Awoken Queen defeated him in a series of battles. Who is the Awoken Queen? Well, read Marassenna(spelling?) to find out. It’s hard to just look at single lore entries and topics in a vacuum, and starting with a pretty intensive read like the Book of Sorrows can be daunting. Pick a starting point, and follow whatever path you want. Another example. Collapse—-> Dark Age——> Iron Lords——-> Siva——-> Rasputin. Good luck out there Guardian. Edit: spelling

Edited by Rev: 6/12/2019 3:43:00 PMWatch a guy called Mynameisbyf on youtube, one of the top lore masters. Like his content? Buy the destiny lore collection vol1 now, as it starts in d1. This is the fastest way to get up to date. Alternatively you could play d1 and discover it as we did. (The Reeeeeally long way about it) The Ishtar Collective is also a great place for ALL lore and for free. Tis a website and can use keywords to track down everything related to said word Can be as obvious as 'cayde 6' and you'll find out everything from when he was human to when he died in the prison of eldars. Or you could sure for something totally unknown like 'wu ming' which we hardly know anything about, other than we can't really trust him.

Edited by VicVinces: 6/12/2019 3:33:09 PMThere is this thing called the traveller that is supposed to represent a powerful force for good or light that is being chased around the universe by an evil force called the darkness. This has been going on for a very long time. The Traveller settles in places where the inhabitants might be able to help to defeat the darkness. So far none have been able to and most are left worse off. The Traveller currently resides in our solar system. We are the latest of it's servants. Gifted with it's ability to come back to life. We also have special fighting abities and killing the traveller's enemies can randomly produce items called engrams. These can be decrypted into weapons or armor that makes us more powerful. The age old struggle attracts other beings who lust for power and they have converged on us. We fight for our survival with seemingly little say in the matter however our player is meeting more and more characters who do not want to play by these rules. For example, Rasputin, Eris, Tolland, Osiris, the Queen, the drifter, Orin, Aida.

There are many YouTubers, My name Is Byf is a popular one. I'd salso suggest buying/reading the book of sorrow (volume 1 is out, volume 2 coming soon), personally i have one they are great quality. Thirdly I'd say that simply reading the lore in game, especially as you play through content that unlocks said pieces of lore can really put the world together. The lore in Destiny is indeed amazing, as long as you have the will to look it up.
-
EVERYWHERE!!! Books of Sorrow, and the place I don’t know where the in-game lore is all together
-
1:) power 2:) off Lol I get lost when it comes to lore

Edited by Dabosaurous: 6/12/2019 10:30:31 AMGo watch byf if you want a pretentious word vomit lore channel. Evades channel is much more to the point. Plus he writes his own script. Merlin games is decent as well but partners with ea.

Eff the nonsense go watch “mynameisbyf” or “merlin games” on youtube. Thank me later.

If you want roundups of it -> MyNameisByf Most of the lore from D1 was on Grimoire Cards -> http://destiny-grimoire.info/ In D2 you need to read Lore Tabs on exotic items and the descriptions of items in general as an example, the description is below the name, Future Safe and It stares back also have a lore tab, as shown in the below Buttonprompts-> https://external-preview.redd.it/yIB7Ewlu6CB0iMOYbzugMcNsg_4qLFfRlLkSpdDCfXs.jpg?auto=webp&s=934046c38ff7a0754a69c1a0a4fbb6dc317cd6ef The rest pieces itself together from environmental storytelling (dreaming city is the latest example) and namedropping in mission and strikes. There is also the Techeun Patrol in the dreaming city, that explains you some devices and secrets of the city. As far as i know it, this changes /day or /week.

My favorite plotline so far is with the Hive. So the Books Of Sorrow is a good place to start.
-
1 ReplyDoes anyone have Byf phone number?!? We got someone!
-
The story of the first Vault of Glass fireteam is a good easy place to start. Then Books of Sorrow
-
Ishtar collective site, go to the timeline, start reading from there. MyNameIsByf is good for binging lore as well. It’s good background audio and you learn a thing or two.
-
Destiny lore is largely fragmented: lots of info about lots of things and the only common line of involvement are the traveller and us guardians. I would start with stuff about the collapse, the city and the warlords that ran things in between. After that I'd just go one enemy race at a time, starting with the hive
-
I'm sure My Name is Byf has already been mentioned, but I'll drop his name anyway.
-
Lore you say! Well look into some lore vids on YouTube by a well known loremaster by the name of My Name is Byf.
-
I’d recommend MyNameIsByf on YouTube. He’s an extremely good lore master and has tons of lore videos. If you don’t feel like watching videos and prefer to read, I’d recommend the Ishtar Collective website
