I get it, infinite ammo isn't a balanced thing.
However, Darci rivals Whisper so well without infinite ammo.
I wonder why...?
If you wish to make something a challenge by removing unlimited ammo, you solve nothing when this reality of Darci exists.
Whisper didn't break challenge, repetetive boss design and damaging did.
That needs to understood because that is the root of the problem, not Infinite ammo.
There is nothing in the game that Whisper kills that Darci can't that is so groundbreakingly bad for balance, that's just pure truth.
Other snipers being punished doesn't even make sense too. That's like saying Acrius punishes all other shotguns for hitting soooo hard.
Exotic identity is at stake here.

Dude now they're gonna nerf it

4 RepliesEdited by RPColten: 6/2/2019 3:59:12 AMI just reread the notes describing why they're nerfing Whisper, and describing DARCI as a potentially superior option actually subscribes to the logic Bungie used. The ammo regeneration is the key, not the damage. In any suitable encounter that plays well into a sniper rifles strengths, which is the better option? Whisper is, because you're essentially able to bypass the questionable ammo drop-rate system and maintain damage through multiple phases. Yes, technically DARCI could possible put out slightly more damage but the caveat to that is that DARCI is entirely reliant on heavy ammo drops. Whisper isn't, at least not completely.

Actually, 'infinite ammo' is somewhat misleading: have a look at any Utoober soloing the Whisper mission or Zero Hour with Whisper. When they get to the Boss with 3 rounds because ammo drops have been sabotaged by some chucklehead code monkey who thinks it's funny to make a sub-routine that randomly makes it impossible to finish a mission because no ammo drops anywhere, they can still take out the Boss with 'infinite ammo' - as long as they never miss a crit. 'Whether we like it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal, etc.' I challenge any nerfherder to find even one example in war of the UN crying into their beer over how snipers are 'too OP' and all armies everywhere should arm themselves with shotguns and slide/charge into tanks and/or fortified positions armed with RPGs and/or .50 machine guns.

2 RepliesPolaris Lance has infinite ammo, but that’s not breaking the game for scout riffles. So how is Whisper infinite ammo breaking snipers? Snipers basically suck in D2 because of map & game mechanics. I carried a sniper 100% of the in D1 because it was always useful, but in D2 I never have a need for one. D.A.R.C.I is a powerful sniper but is a random drop. Whisper required completing a challenging timed mission to obtain, so it should be in league of it’s own. Call me crazy, but weapons that have a high difficulty to obtain, SHOULD break the game as a reward for the time and effort it took to obtain them.
-
5 RepliesSo use Darci then 👍

The thing I find funny is that Bungie's solution to snipers being entirely useless and non-viable, is to nerf the only viable sniper to offer "more variety". Of what, exactly? I guess you've got a greater variety of shit sniper rifles now that whisper has joined the party.
-
4 RepliesWith the ammo changes, wouldn't whisper still do more? It would take a little longer, but with whispered breathing it'll outdps
-
All in all what whisper is turning into is what we originally had in D1 with black spindle so it's not a big deal. It had infinite ammo kinda broken I can see why they are changing it who cares it's just a damn game.
-
There was definitely some middle ground that would have left some of the identity but removed the infinite ammo issue. I've seen quite a few clever ideas on white nail reworks by others in the community, but in the end I just don't think it was important enough to Bungie to warrant the effort compared to other things vying for development resources (which totally sucks). Such is the roller coaster that is the D2 sandbox.

13 RepliesStop whining. It's happening next week weither you like it or not.

Get over it.

Whisper needs to be a special at this point.

Very simple really. Buff the pathetically weak stuff to not godly OP destruction like the Top tier Exotics. You won't need to constantly outdo yourselves if you set a damn baseline and let some be those that rise above. MIND BLOWN. - Power Creep's negative effect is cyclic. We wouldn't be craping on 'challenge' if the Aeons were worth a damn.
This was your solution to powercreep which causes powercreep. Whisper as much as i hate nerfs needed one. My biggest problem is the nerf makes it a legendary again and bungie hasn't hinted at adjusting difficulty of stuff like reckoning or raids. Whisper is not a gun that you or I can defend especially with another gun thats just asking for the other gun to get nerfed as well. People aren't using other things because whisper is the best thats what meta is so they are nerfing the whisper meta. It will be usable but not something that can bypass ammo economy.

There is nothing in the game that Whisper does that Darci can't that is so groundbreakingly bad for balance, that's just pure truth.
INFINITE AMMO
Other snipers being punished doesn't even make sense too.
Thats exactly what is happening and thats due fo whisper being a better gun by miles you can't out damage infinite damage so why use other snipers that may or may not get heavy ammo? Izanagi is my favorite but it does only half of what whisper does and doesn't come close if you are using the catalyst.
-
11 RepliesDARCI’s sustained damage is capped because of ammo constraints. Whisper basically has infinite ammo as long as you can land city’s.
-
4 RepliesWith the Catalyst, Whisper still carries more total damage. Darci just does Burst DPS better. While I don’t like how the Whisper was tuned, Infinite Ammo is really hard to balance around
-
10 Replies
However, Darci rivals Whisper so well without infinite ammo.
It really doesn't, which is why they're removing whisper's potential for unlimited ammo.

1 ReplyEdited by AStah-: 5/31/2019 11:37:22 PMSo you're using the argument that DARCI being on par for DPS with Whisper supports the idea of the nerf being....'inefficent'? If that's the case that is not coherent support. Does this man you want DARCI to be nerfed? Wouldn't you just post this same thing again, but for DARCI? Whisper has infinite ammo potential, I don't even know why or how that perk made itself back in to the game. Perhaps because of the PvE climate shifting to be so easy, but the fact is Bungie is now unable to design content enabling snipers because of how redundant Whisper would make these encounters. I'm sure everyone is sick of the word 'nerf', but this change actually makes sense for the game, PvE's skill floor has dropped significantly since the reintroduction of one-shot special weapons and it is because of these overly broken PvE focused exotics. DARCI can be compared and can not be compared to Whisper for a variety of game design reasons. It can because; - They are both heavies, they are both snipers - DARCI can be enabled by rally barricades and luna-rifts....that is about it It can't because; - It has FINITE ammo, which is miles off of having potentially infinite ammo. It is possible to literally never run out of Whisper ammo, all one needs to do is land precision shots, which is the entire point of a sniper rifle. This has nothing to do with boss health and what DARCI can do, you can hypothetically go in to any activity and never run out of what is meant to be by far the most coveted, rare, and powerful ammo-type in the game. Only thing in the way is having 3 shots. Bosses do not even need to come in to question, as this type of ammo regen can be done off of DREGS, let alone servitors. They tried to reign it in through a bunch of nerfs which ended up not being enough. PC players especially have no reason to run a different sniper because how simple it is to land these shots as opposed to console. Personally I wanted it to keep the ammo regen so it could be 'different' and instead having the max ammo capacity be somewhere between 3 and 5. DARCI runs out of ammo eventually, no matter what. There actually becomes a point to hanging on to heavy ammo while it is equipped, same as any other heavy weapon/exotic. - DARCI is a completely different archetype of sniper. It is high rate of fire, much lower impact. Many, MANY more shots are needed to be landed in far shorter duration on the SAME precision spot in order to even come close to Whisper's DPS. Recoil immediately becomes a factor, room for error is dramatically reduced, and skill floor is automatically increased as a result. This archetypal difference also means DARCI will always have more ammo reserves, same reason Threat Level and Main Ingredient will always have more ammo reserves than a Last Man Standing and Erentil FR4. - Yes, DARCI does massive damage, it may be nerfed, doubt it though. It's a heavy. Some heavies are focused on ad clearing, and have less single-target throughput, like MGs (Thunderlord, HH etc). Some are precision focused, like Sleeper and Queenbreaker's....DARCI is a sniper....hint; ad-clearing and multiple enemy targets are NOT the aim of the game with those, as we can see with Whisper. Whisper's damage isn't getting nerfed...the ammo regen is. Too easy to use, and not the way Bungie envision the game being played as PvE is atm. If damage was an issue, Acrius would be nerfed, as would DARCI, both of which being able to out-dps Whisper anyway nerf or not. Now, what separates the two now? Not much, one is gonna be stronger on solar singe, the other will be stronger on arc. One won't require lunafaction wells leaving other exotics up for use (as well as increasing titan usage and need for rally barricade), the other still necessitates it. One hits harder, the other doesn't.

7 RepliesWhisper is op. They faved the same problem in D1 and bought it back in d2. It’s OP. I’m just running the scourge raid today and it’s the FIRST time in 20 completions I didn’t use whisper and whispered breathing. On my best run I hit close to 8M in DPS. It’s dirty as f-ck and pointless using anything else.
-
6 RepliesThe question you should be asking is why would Bungie bring back a weapon they had to nerf in D1 because it was a problem? They have to be smart enough to know that it would be a problem in D2. I think they know exactly what they are doing. They are purposely creating strong weapons and gear that get players to play the way Bungie wants them to play. They then create new content and adjust the sandbox to get everyone to play the way Bungie wants them to play the new content.

1 ReplyThe plan is to nerf Darci once you all start using it, duh.
-
Infinite ammo is fine
-
22 RepliesIt's simple Shifts the meta. I mean, won't whisper still do more overrall damage? Yeah.. But once someone says nerf, usage numbers plummet regardless of how effective the item still is.
-
1 Replyoh god don't do this. they'll nerf darci next!

11 RepliesEdited by Chordant: 5/31/2019 6:42:56 AMSomeone made the calculations, and the new base max rounds for Whisper will outdamage DARCI and its base rounds. DARCI has a higher DPS, but once all the ammo is gone, Whisper does more overall.
