“Games As A Service” is FRAUD

i responded with this video in another post and someone said it should be its own post. edit* here is another copy of the link! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tUAX0gnZ3Nw i know this is a long watch but ALL gamers should see it. along with these companies trying to misrepresent video games as a service and not a good (primarily what’s in the video), what’s happening is we are essentially investing in these companies with no reward for our risk. we don’t get a stake in the company. we don’t get royalties. really, we often don’t even get exclusive preorder rewards that don’t drop at a later date for everyone else..but we take ALL of the risk because our money is used as the cushion. no other investors would accept these terms. and it’s all of these “games as a service” situations, not just destiny. the demand is clear: make your game good enough to charge a subscription (for a set amount of time) or stop masquerading your game as a “service.” if anyone is seeing this and not wanting to watch such a long video, i PROMISE it will save you hours of headache once you peek behind the curtain and can start holding these companies accountable by not preordering and not buying a game until it’s been reviewed and you know it’s up to snuff. i was also reminded to mention that MANY reviews are paid for so assess those sources critically. we are in this together. these games are FOR US and there are more of us than there are of them. if you don’t agree, that’s fine but i hope enough of us do so we can make it better for us and everyone else. ✊ see you out there in the wild!

  • Disagree. 1. In this digital age with broadband internet and cheap mass storage...EVERY game is a service these days. The notion of a game being a fixed product is as obsolete as a Blockbuster video store in this Netflix age. 2. The issue here is that you have a console gaming community that is deeply attached to this outdated notion of a "complete game". When the reality is that they want the continual update, servicing and expansions of games.....BUT DON'T WANT TO PAY THE FAIR MARKET VALUE OF THAT LEVEL OF SERVICE. So many of you think that a one time expenditure of $60 entitles you to an endless flow of new content. It doesn't. The reason why console devs have to resort to all of these elaborate monetization schemes is BECAUSE console gamers have made it clear that they wont' support paying sub fees. 3. Conversely, this is not an issue on PC where MMOs----the orginal games-as-services----have thrived for decades. So PC gamers have long established their willingness to invest in games and establish a long term relationship with them. Both in terms of time....and money 4. For those who dont' have a monetary objection, many console gamers are simply not aware of he fact that NONE of these games EVER launch in a mature state. They always take years of refinement and additions of new content before they finally reach their potential. Which every MMO player who signs on for Year 1 of a new MMO understands. ...and its why very few MMOs start on console. They almost always start on PC.....go through their growing pains.....and THEN are ported over to console.
