What is the lore behind strike bosses taking no damage (going immune)?

I hardly know anything about Destiny lore. I know everyone wants a piece of The Traveler and that's about it. :) But going through strikes recently and trying to get Oxygen and the Service Revolver I noticed that many, many strike bosses (The Darkness?) have the ability to go immune. So far I haven't seen anything like that being given by the light. Yes, Guardians can get an overshield for a short period of time. And Titan bubbles also provide protection for short time. Exotics like One Eyed Mask and Wormhusk Crown can give health regen. But so far I can't find anywhere that the light can give full immunity to damage. Yet the darkness can provide immunity for some reason. In Destiny 1 I can't remember strike bosses having the ability to go immune, but maybe I missed something? I don't know if 'The Light' and 'The Darkness' are old fashioned terms, but I hope you guys know what I mean: Guardians who have light can't go immune. Enemy aliens/bosses who don't have light can go immune. So long story short: What can give these aliens the ability to go immune? Thanks for any help! :)

  • It's entirely possibly to burn all of them down before they even have a chance to react, but, if you fight them all as Bungie intended, theres a reason all of them go immune. Nokris creates a shield around himself that you have to break, Brakion stands behind a shielded wall, etc. Bonus fact about Brakion, if you damage him enough but dont kill him before time for him to put up the first wall, he will become immune and enter the final stage of his fight where he will chase you down while you still have to capture the Vex plates. Makes for a much more interesting fight. I miss D1 bosses thar were mostly just tough as hell bullet sponges. Kovik you dick....

    • Nokris, hive magic. Brakion, vex shield. Bracus Zahn, Cabal shield. Savathuns Song, Hive Magic infused with void light.

    • It depends: Each boss has a capability within their respective abilities to lock down and prevent the overflow of damage. You can overpower this status with quick damage succession hits though. For the Arms Dealer, it's like armor lock. For Exodus Down, it's activating cloaking to make an exit. They aren't their anymore. For any vex boss, it's simply using their primary power source to create a gel barrier all around them which doesn't allow the damage to seep in. The condition for these capabilities though is only at the right times and under minimal time frames that it can be upheld. The mission on nessus though, with the fully upgraded barrier which couldn't be brought down unless you had a particular buff? That might be a dangerous scenario if made permanent.

    • I think it’s just lazy mechanics . Pretty much every boss has a very standard 3 phase mechanic in destiny

    • It's just a game mechanic to make the boss fight a bit longer

    • They all made an unholy bargain with the ultimate dark lords of Destiny: the writers.

    • My buddy and I talked about this. Imagine for the fanatic if he ate one of his minions to give him the shield. It would add some sense of story to it. Since they are dead fallen he can simply add more to his army anyway. Itd be kinda cool.

    • For Nokris, he’s using those crystals to shield himself. For the Fanatic, perhaps he is using his minions to shield himself similar to that one Taken centurion from Court of Oryx. They both use ontological forms of power. Since Vex can manipulate time, perhaps the barriers they use stop bullets by manipulating the time around them. Of course, they can only do it in a small area.

      • Guardians aren’t “immune”, we’re “immortal” as long as we have our ghosts. RIP Cayde-6

        • Certain parts have lore basis while others do not. Generally the smaller immunity moments have no basis in lore.

Video game mechanics, they have no bearing on lore, no lore on why they do go immune. Except maybe the Fanatic which I give him a pass.... Maybe... Void shielded Chieftans of the Scorn can make themselves or the group they're with immune unless you destroy their totem, in the Fanatic's case he's just able to and I say with heavy quotes, """""""""temporarily"""""""""""

        • Its probably so they can inject some minor mechanical element into the fight so that not every boss is basically a hard-hitting uber bullet sponge - a very common complaint during D1.

        • What's the story behind all the cool loot being in the cash shop? What's the story behind all the cash shop updating more than all the vendors each season? Hope there's some good lore behind that.

          • <Game mechanics, just like difficulty spikes, have no actual bearing on lore unless said otherwise. The Vex are able to produce immunity shields, I'm sure the Darkness and its armies can do the same thing. Everyone else is cheating>

            • In The Garden World Strike, Ghost mentions the minotaurs having a temporal shield that erase your bullets from time. So either Space Magic or Future Tech -blam!-ery depending on what youre fighting.

              • It's a game mechanic. Not everything has or needs to be explained by lore.
