**NOTE**: Every time I make a generalization about linear fusions, I am excluding Sleeper Simulant. It should stay as a heavy weapon.
With the release of Arbalest, we got our hands on a non-heavy linear fusion for the first time. It sits in a really good, balanced place in both PVP and PVE. Contrasting this to the other linear fusions in the game, it is definitely more viable in all circumstances, with the exception of Sleeper Simulant. Even with the recent changes to heavy weapons, (that were put in place to give more variety amongst the heavy category) linear fusion rifles STILL feel lackluster and aren’t viable in either PVP or PVE.
In PVP, sure they are fun to use and aren’t awful, but they are at best just a sniper rifle with a charge up. They one shot to the head and two shot to the body, as does every single sniper rifle that takes SPECIAL ammo to use. No one is wasting their heavy slot to use a gun that behaves exactly like a gun that they don’t have to wait for a chance to grab heavy ammo for. Sure, they have better aim assist than snipers, but don’t have that instant fire upon trigger pull like a sniper does.
In PVE, same scenario. They simply do what any sniper rifle does. The heavy weapon slot is used for damage in PVE. This is not news to anyone. The damage of any Crooked Fang or Queenbreaker is going to pale in comparison to its heavy counterparts. No one is going to use a linear fusion over some of the most powerful weapons in the game. It is again comparable to using a sniper rifle to damage a boss. With a sniper rifle, you may be dealing less damage per shot but you way more ammo than a linear fusion.
Linear fusions should take special ammo. They would be much more viable and add an interesting feel to the current sandbox. I am not saying keep them completely as is, I definitely feel they would need to be adjusted to fit into the special category, but as of right now, they fit better in the special category than they do the heavy, and it took Arbalest to demonstrate that fact.

6 RepliesI say this is my suspicion, with no evidence stated by bungie to confirm or deny it.... But. My SUSPICION is that Bungie released the Arbalest as a test run to see what effect that line rifles being in a special slot would have on pvp, given the frequent nerfs to the weapon type and it's overall lackluster performance as well as the overall humdrum performance of fusion rifles, which are good if you're good with them and terrible if you're not. I suspect they, like you, feel there's not a "great" reason for them to be in the powered slot other than to distinguish them from regular fusion rifles.... If arbalest fails to distinguish it's self as being "more popular" a weapon than snipers or shotguns, or causes people to rely too heavily on it, you will see line rifles, because that's what they are, line rifles, stay as powered weapons, if arbalest fails to really make a splash in crucible, you will probably see line rifles become special ammo weapons in the future, either in this game or the next.
