Destiny Raids (and lairs) ranked worst to best

Leviathan - I’m not saying this is a bad raid. But when I think about the amount of desire I have to play this raid, it’s the lowest on the list. It’s too long for what it is: a puzzle. I like puzzles, don’t get me wrong. But once you solve the puzzle, you know the ending. And the tedious mechanics make lfg groups almost unbearable. Vault of Glass - The first installment is a great raid, but for the most part, raids have simply gotten better as they go. It was a fun time, don’t get me wrong. But I just don’t know if I could sit through the OG confluxes ever again. Eater of worlds - to be honest, for what this lair is, I truly don’t mind it. It’s actually one of the coolest bosses and the most interesting fights in the franchise. Everything past the first 2 “encounters” is very fresh. But it just can’t surpass the rest on my list. Crota’s end - this thing would’ve lost points if I didn’t love the raid so much. It’s such an easy raid, but it’s entertaining and it just feels like home. This raid is propped up by nostalgia rather than good design and mechanics. However, the lamp section remains one of the coolest encounters bungie has ever created and still one of my favorites. Spire of Stars - I LOVE the final boss fight. It’s the only fight in the franchise that can still give me trouble. The first encounter is also entertaining, but that’s literally the whole raid. You get a jumping puzzle with a couple secrets, a joke of a “boss phase 1”, and that’s the mid section. I would’ve loved this raid more if it weren’t for the toxic community ruining the experience for me. Last wish - this is a beautiful raid. It has possibly the hardest and most well designed final boss fight ever....if you do it the “legit” way. But seriously, if you take away the legit version of the fight with riven, this raid drops a ways for me. Beating riven legit was the 2nd most excited I’ve ever been beating a boss. Swolegoroth is a fun fight as well. But the techeun fights are not that much fun for me. At least they haven’t aged well. Scourge of the Past - this raid really has 2 things. 1. The only sparrow race ever in a raid. 2. One of the best boss fights ever designed. And my god, they do this raid justice. Yeah it’s a short raid, but it serves its purpose flawlessly. There is truly nothing wrong with this raid. Every encounter is either serviceable or some of the best content so far. Wrath of the Machine - the fight for #1 is so close. It’s so hard to choose because both raids are very different and have different enjoyable qualities. This one is just so fluid. The raid has a feeling to it, and it flows so perfectly. At no point does this raid get boring. Every encounter flows so unbelievably well. Pure gold. And I think I’d have to say aksis might be the most well designed boss this franchise has created to this day. King’s fall - there are ups and downs in kings fall, sure. There are boring moments, yes. But this is the golden standard for how a raid should be. More bosses than any other raid, secrets hidden in every corner, lore lore LORE. Seriously, this is the poster boy for raiding. This is how it’s done. Not every encounter is perfect, but they stacked this thing the way a raid should be. The greatest moment in gaming was the moment I took down oryx. I screamed. It truly felt like we had slain a god. Brilliant moment and it’s why I play this franchise.

  • No offense but as soon I saw sos above crota and vog. Even above eater I knew you invalidated your whole list.

    • The thing that would keep me from putting kf first is that you basically had to have touch of Malice to do it, and then you just stand in one place and hold the trigger down. It is one of the most fun raids with your friends though. The dick wall, and your friends that have trouble jumping getting torn, and the ship jumping puzzle have you a lot of material for ball busting.

      • You are welcome to your opinion but, to put VOG just before Leviathan at the bottom of the list.. Makes it really hard to take you seriously with anything you have to say, IMO. VoG and Kings fall are 1a and 1b for me.. and I think they are for most people. Followed by 2a Last Wish and 2b WotM. SotP is a short fun raid, as is Crota, the rest.. are really crap and I can't even be bothered to put them on the list.

          • VoG and Crota's end were definitely my favorites. Once Kings Fall came along, they started leaning towards mechanics which I didn't like much. Mechanics need to be SIMPLE, not " Defend A while shooting b in C order or wipe mechanic D will kick in"

              • This is from worst to best: Leviathan- The lore behind Calus is great. I love the shadows idea, but this raid just didn't cut it. Eater of Worlds- Very, very short and way too easy. Crota's End- Everyone praises this raid but honestly it was just a glitchy mess at Crota. Crota was one of the lamest looking raid bosses (big green flamey knight oh no!). I will say it had some very cool looking armor and weapons. Vault of Glass- Don't get me wrong. This is a classic and it will always hold a special place in my heart, but raids have come such a long way that these newer ones deserve some credit. Scourge of the Past- Stand by for titanfall. Spire of Stars- Call it a game of catch, but it was the first boss where the final stand was actually deadly. The mechanics for the raid are very cool as well. I like the idea of having to destroy his fleet of ships and the calus robot also being used. Very fun. Wrath of the Machine- Best. Soundtrack. Ever. Last Wish- Killing riven (the legit way) was one of the craziest things. This raid gave me Kings Fall vibes. Kings Fall- Yes. Just yes.

              • In my D2 Endgame experience... Best to worst Shattered Throne; the only thing keeping this from a 5/5 rating is that it doesn't have it's own loot pool. Has great fights, a great exotic quest (if the wish ender was better maybe the best Exotic quest) it has everything... Might go run it solo later just thinking about this. 4.75/5 The whisper; this saved Destiny for me, this encounter is AMAZING and if you haven't done it... What are you doing go do the thing. Seriously. 4.75/5 Last wish: this along with shattered throne are the best content encounters in Destiny 2. Full stop. Riven, done legit, is the best boss in this game. And all of the other boss encounters are great. The Vault takes it for me as a favorite encounter (the music and controlled chaos is second to none) the loot can be a bit of a pain to get, but has enough variety to be interesting (and good enough to be useful). 4.70/5 Scourge; it's fun, a little easy, and doesn't overstay it's welcome, but man this loot pool is bad (though it can drop you the best shotty in the game, the other loot frankly isn't good) so it really comes down to the encounters being really fun. 3.8/5 Leviathan; it's a puzzle raid with bosses really being rooms but the loot (even if it's only year 1 loot, midnight coup, alone as a god and inagurial address are all worth it) is outstanding. 3.8/5 Eater of worlds; was my favorite boss encounter until scourge but otherwise is pretty forgettable (have always said that after the jumping puzzle they're should have been a engine room boss guard boss to make things interesting) and there really is no desirable loot here. The end boss fight is awesome and that's what keeps it off if the total bottom 3/5 Spire of stars; end boss is interesting but so tedious and unforgiving it sucks the fun out of this entire raid lair, the mechanics are there, but the loot pool is bad at best. Having the most tedious jumping puzzle in the game doesn't help. I ran it twice, got all of the loot and could care less about this lair(since sleeper got nerfed into Oblivion). 2/5

                • Ranking based on which one I had the most fun playing. 1. Crota's End 2. VoG & WotM 3. EoW 4. Kings Fall & Last Wish 5. Spire of 6. Leviathan - I ran crota every week solo and it was pretty damn fun for me. - VoG and WotM felt very similar. It was very "do this, do that" fast paced action and it didn't matter if you lost your team, you could double down and get shit down. - Eater or world's reminded me of the same from VoG and WotM - Kings Fall from a lore standpoint is my favorite raid, the build up to that raid the the scale of the bosses was amazing, same with Last Wish, but it didn't "do it" for me like Kings Fall did. - spire of stars was fun in concept but the amount of tiny things that could screw up your entire run and force you to wipe was beyond stupid, easily the most annoying raid I've played this far. When stuff goes right, it's fun, but all to much, shit goes down hill. - Leviathan... I hate that raid to hell and back. Especially when it first launched. The brutal tanky ass enemies with double primary, the "if one person dies your whole run is -blam!-ed" nonsense. The revive tokens... God almighty. It was a gigantic step down from it's predecessor, WotM.

                  • The music in Kings fall compared to every other raid made that the best one for me. Aksis phase 2 just sounds like a remix of Christmas music to me.

                  • Crota gave us black hammer, vog gave us fate bringer and vex the most op weapon to exist, oryx gave us the swords and touch of malice, and wrath gave us fire weapons(the assault rifle tho) D2 has yet to deliver truly god tier weapons Ya 1000 voices is good but it's not great

                  • I remember when I first beat Kings Fall. Three really nice young guys basically carried us up to the sisters. It took about 4 hours. Me, and my two friends had never done a single raid before. We got to sisters and they left us and wished us good luck. We got a new group with no idea what to do. So we had to figure out sisters from scratch and the few YouTube videos we could find. We knew what to do, but actually doing it flawlessly was the hard part. None of us were really good players lol. We beat sisters after a few hours. A few HOURS! Now we are at Oryx. Only one of us had an idea of what to do. We spent 6 hours on Oryx. SIX FREAKING HOURS ON ORYX. It was 2:00 in the morning for me when we beat him. When he died all six of us just started screaming. We just began screaming and jumping up and down and yelling. It was the best destiny experience I’ve had to this day. Nothing has even come close to that. Still my favorite raid experience.

But Bungie if you read this, please note that many of these posts agree on the importance of good and meaningfull loot. To name a few: Last word Vision of confluence armour with unique perks ... ps I love raiding, give us more raids in the future please.

                      • Best to worst imo. Vog- was fun and had great weapons and armor. Last Wish- was fun had great armor and decent weapons. Wrath of the Machine- Had fantastic weapons, average armor, and was enjoyable. Crota- The most fun I've ever had in destiny, great armor, and above average weapons. Kings Fall- Pretty boring imo but everyone else seems to like it, had trash weapons but good armor. Scourge of the Past- Fun but most of the loot is trash. Eater of Worlds- Enjoyable but the armor is mega ugly and weapons are meh. Leviathan- Terrible armor, some good weapons, but was overall boring. Spire: Never have done it and never will but it looks terrible and the loot is trash.

                      • People seem to forget that loot is a huge part of the raid. KF had trash tier loot, and was coupled with a shit leveling system, and all our good loot was in the trash thanks to the Y2 systems. It was also insanely long, not just in encounter numbers, but also encounter length. You could nearly finish an encounter, then something bad happens, and sends you all the way back for another half hour encounter. Absolutely the worst raid experience I have ever had with this series. Boring and a slog with experienced raiders, and absolute hell with the inexperienced. F KF. Spire is another example of this. You could rush through it with some good guys, but that won't stop the raid from glitching out and f-ing you at the end. Got some inexperienced in your crew? Ha. Good luck. Sad thing is, most of the mechanics are fairly simple, but there's just so much going on at one point, it can quickly become overwhelming. Not to mention, this was also one of the only raids to REALLY punish you for your level. Meanwhile, the gear was just a slightly altered version of the ugly EoW set, and the weapons were underwhelming at best. If there's any reason why catalysts shouldn't be in raids- it's this garbage. If I never do this one again, it'll be too soon. Scourge... how could they ever compare this to WotM and say it wasn't a raid lair, and wouldn't be like crota? Scourge speedruns are down sub 7 minutes, just like crota! Armor, again, ugly, and with random rolls now a thing, good luck getting a piece that doesn't have primary ammo finder, or sidearm scav, or some other nonsense. Weapons, I mean, threat level was great for a minute or two before the archetype got nerfed to hell. The rest of the raid weapons are pointless. A rocket in the same archetype we've seen a hundred times before, with no better rolls than we've already got. An inconsistent fusion that seems to have an 80% dropweight. A scout, lol, scouts in D2 post-vanilla... but at least you can get one with box breathing that does something special in extreme circumstances in pvp... lol. Utterly forgettable raid exotic weapon, and a sparrow that doesn't do as advertised on the box, and doesn't even have insta-summon. Even if you wanted the gear, this raid is so short, and the dropweights so skewed that getting what you want, with a good roll, is rare and frustrating. Sure the boss is cool the first time, but after that it's like herding cats. No thanks. EoW, a return to tiny Crota sized raids, with a quarter of the fun and none of the loot. The armor was atrocious, only one of the guns was ever worth using, and every encounter was just frolicking and ad control. Bad raid, but not bad enough to be overly vocal about. Just another let down, during a time in the game where we were already pretty let down. Leviathan, at the very least, had some decent weapons. The armor was ugly and didn't originally have any kind of raid perks though, and that was a huge shock after coming from WotM. I still regularly see the pulse or rocket in crucible, Acrius is damn strong (now, not then) and I've personally killed over 90k enemies with the trusty Coup (77k+ on my current one). The encounters and raid itself were not great, and felt like momentary parlor games before finally getting to shoot something that mattered. And even then, the mechanics and damage gating were overbearing. I still would run this raid, and can have fun doing so, but this is mainly because of all the changes to the game as we know it. This raid is a joke now with no more double primary, new supers, etc. But at least it's not as bad as the others above. Last wish, a return to glory. Finally some raids worth doing! Great lore, great aesthetics, some good rewards... Beauty returned to the raid armor. Weapons had variety, and though most of them aren't terribly useful, you'll still see people using or hunting for them. The RNG in this raid definitely knocks it down a peg. Having to run a raid 75+ times to get everything once, is a joke. Most of the community will run it once, if at all. This kind of thing needs to be looked at, and I know has been adjusted, but I'm so burned out from this raid that I don't care anymore. I still run it to help out, but it's becoming more and more a chore. This is the worst of the best raids because of these mechanical and loot based problems. Crota's end. I don't really understand why people dislike this one so much. It was a fun little romp, and had decent gear to go after. Sure, it was shorter than VoG, but that was also one of the alluring things about it. Oh hey, don't have time for a "real" raid? Let's run a crota! Here's another thing I genuinely love about this raid- if you're an above average player, you can solo it. Awesome. On the other side of the coin, if you have no thumbs, but have some good friends, you can do the most important job of all- go behind that wall, and punch it to distract the boomers. I know Bungie has since rebelled against lesser skilled people in raids, demanding that everyone engage with a mechanic of some kind, etc... but that in my mind was the perfect time for the experienced, and inexperienced. Wrath... this raid had it all. Good loot, decent looking armor and perks, great encounters, perfect balance between length and slog, replay-ability, and a fancy AF quest for the exotic. It had hero moments, you could carry or be carried, the lore and aesthetics were interesting, need I go on? Wrath is fantastic. VoG, the first and best entry into the idea of raids in an FPS game. This may not have aged so well, and there may be better encounters, but nothing will beats it as a whole. The weapons are f(_)cking fantastic, handsome armor, lore- incredible, encounters- engaging. VoG was what every raid should be, a rewarding adventure you want to go on again and again. Yes, I have rose-tinted glasses. Yes, I'm ok with that. And no, you cannot convince me otherwise. Hating on VoG because Wrath evolved the idea of raids, is like hating on Elvis, because Bieber has better production. Raids are extremely subjective experiences. It's funny to see how differently people feel about them. Also, this is a great way to see how Bungie is pulled in so many different directions and has a hard time being really successful with the community as a whole.

Raids went to shite once they started all the running around with balls and jumping puzzles Original VOG, Crota, and POE, was bungles best effort. Rest were/are poo poo

                          • I wanted to post my list as a casual raider who raids with randos because a raid still has to work for those of us who don’t practice every week with the same team to get it right. Spire of Stars - the absolute worst. None of this is fun. Mechanics at the boss fight are too unforgiving - there’s no room for improv, clutch plays or having fun. It’s more like a military excercise than a game. And I’m still doing it for the dumb sleeper catalyst. I hate it. Eater of Worlds - it’s not bad, it’s not good. It’s just there. I’ve done it a dozen times and still couldn’t teach the final boss mechanics cause the ones who love it, know it and they rest of us are just to clear adds. Not a good “team” boss battle. Leviathan - a great concept that somehow feels slight (probably because of what everyone else says - the lack of boss battles) but I think it’s also missing a gladiator arena level. Since the cabal is a space fantasy version of the Roman empire what better level could there be. It should be a series of random mini-bosses that all require different mechanics to beat. A serious missed opportunity. Vault of Glass - a good raid that gets really long in the middle. I always got so bored standing around killing Oracles and fighting the Templar in the same arena for the amount of time it takes. But a great maze/jumping puzzle. And a boss battle that requires real communication but doesn’t become a wipe if one person dies (Calus fight in Leviathan). Wrath of the Machine - a solid raid that doesn’t rank higher because I had some of the most toxic experiences with the community in my years of playing Destiny. Crotas End - Yes it’s short. Yes it’s glitchy. And yes I played it 41 times before I got Necrochasm ( which just ended up in the vault). But it has my single favorite raid encounter with the lanterns so it rates high. Last Wish - An excellent raid ruined by the wall of wishes. I’ve never done the raid start to finish and have yet to actually complete the vault or do Riven the “legit” way. Nowadays I just do 3 Rivens and a heart run otherwise it’s just a teaching exercise for people who can’t count to 4 or 6. Scourge of the Past - just plain fun. It could be longer but what I love about it is that with a good team communicating well you can get the final phases done in numerous ways. Everything I think raids should be based around - communication, improv, not being randomly assigned roles, and of course sparrows. Kings Fall - it has its flaws. But it has so many strengths (best and most frustrating jumping puzzles, most chances for solo and team play, best design) that it far outweighs a problem here or there. And there are so many secrets. I still have never seen Oryxs basketball court except on Youtube (and if you don’t know what I’m talking about look it up. It’s the most secret and useless thing Destiny ever did and it’s wonderful because of it). I would actually like to see more stuff like Scourge or Shattered Throne in the future or somehow find the magic that was Kings Fall again.
