In the 5th Invitation of the Nine, the Emissary makes reference to us (the Guardian) as having “incredible agency” and that we can “leave this game”. Byf’s video on this is really quite good and I would recommend watching it before continuing, but if you can’t be bothered I will restate some of what he says.
This isn’t actually the first time Bungie has broken the 4th wall (acknowledged us, the player). That honour goes to the lore tab of the Skull of Dire Ahamkara which refers to us rather blatantly as “O player mine”. Using this and the Claws of Ahamkara tab in which the Ahamkara ask us to let them into our (the Players) thoughts, we can infer that Ahamkara are trying to make themselves more ‘real’ by entering the Players reality. Interesting, but not really the thing I want to talk about.
For that we have to look at the Otherside exotic sparrow, which you can get as a random drop from strikes. It’s rare but no too rare, I’ve gotten about three or four since Warmind. Anyway, it’s tab talks about a perfect enemy on the otherside, which has the same intelligence, same experience and same abilities. It also mentions (and I feel this is key) that the unseen player on the otherside knows us so well they practically are us. I find this intriguing, because if you look at this tab with the idea that it is speaking to the Guardian, then the perfect enemy is us, the real us, the Player. We have the same experiences since we have played along with our Guardians ever since their first rez and we know them so well they practically are us; in a metaphorical sense, since you could call them personas or avatars. In terms of abilities it’s a bit harder to explain, but perhaps wonder about whose throwing those grenades.
My idea of Bungie’s plan is this: the Destiny universe and ours exist in parallel, much like the many worlds theory in quantum physics. We can interact with, or watch that universe through our screens and through the Guardian, since we are their player on the otherside. The Ahamkara are aware of these other universes because of the nature of their wish powers and are trying to make themselves more powerful by expanding into other universes, including our own. However, because of the Guardians expanding power through the Sword logic (somewhat) they are getting dangerously close to realising this too, if they haven’t already, and might end up breaking through the universes as well. If true, I believe this is what the Emissary is referring to when she talks about the “game” and the Guardian being able to leave it.
Or on a less interesting note, the Emissary could simply be referring to the ‘game’ between us, her, the Drifter, the Nine and the Queen. Though I wish someone would tell us the rules.

It's pretty cool, the way Bungie is building it all up. It's also kinda scary if you watch a lot of science-fiction or anthology. Think about it, the game is a world within a world, with real people who don't know we exist and see them as fake. And we play the game for fun, killing people, who are real in that world, without a second thought. But what if we're in a game too? Spooky stuff, bois, spooky stuff.

I always thought like that. I'm pretty sure that the reference is for the game between the drifter, the nine, the emissary and us, the chosen one AND about us real world players at the same time. If the guardians realize one day that they are not the only existence on a meta-level I will gladly welcome them. And I hope my guardians can forgive me for all my complaints about them when I sucked at this "game".

Mind. Blown. My original thoughts were what your last little paragraph were, but now? Excellently written btw. I was able to read this out loud to my husband and it just flowed.

We love killing that fourth wall!!
-
I disagree, this is not breaking the fourth wall, they are referring to the guardian I think

You the guy from Reddit?

4 RepliesI think the nine are referring to the guardian, not the player. When the emissary says, “Leave this game”, she means the nine’s “schemes,” that the queen told us about way back when. Stop taking thinks literally and think of more metaphorical meanings to what people say.

I'm not too worried about it until I look outside my living room window and see a freaking wish dragon on the lawn.

8 Replies<To be fair, Mara says not to get caught in the Nine's schemes, as their games never end. I don't think we're dealing with a 4th wall break, just clever wordplay.>
-
I think when they refer to "the game" they are talking about some big enemy plot, such as the dreaming city.
-
I think the closest thing to a 4th wall break is the little nods in the Ahamkara lore. But they are probably just that: fun nods. The lore tab “Otherside” could apply to multiple ideas and the newest mention of the “the game” likely refers to schemes rather than Destiny itself.

This is hurting me head

Darci also breaks the fourth wall in it’s lore tab

2 RepliesIt’s not complete until someone pushes our character to the side and looks directly at us

Oof. Byfs video is really late

Interesting. *Conspiracy theories intensify*

Illuminati all over again
