...and your rant is right on point. Its the problem in a nutshell.
Destiny 2 has been a brand-management **train-wreck**. I wouldn't be suprised if its someday taught in business school as an example of what NOT to do.
Your hesitation and fear is emblematic of a catastrophic failure of branding. What I speak of branding, I mean the ability of the consumer to look at your product, and PREDICT what they will get for their money, and what kind of experience they will have for their money.
Although people love to rag on Call of Duty....CoD is a branding success story. That franchise has been around for over a decade, because Activision has branded it VERY well. When you buy a Call of Duty game, you have a very clear idea of what you're going to get for your money...and what kind of game you will play. Love it. Hate it. Indifferent....you know what you're going to get.
Souls-borne games are the same way. If you put one of them into your machine, better buckle up your chin-strap and make sure your pads are on 'cause----as they say in football---"There's going to be some hittin' goin' on." ...and if you don't want to deal with it, get off the field (Get Good.)
Same with EA and its sports games. Whenever you see a long-term product success story, you see a branding success story at its root.
The Foundation of Destiny's problems is that Bungie is obsessed with control....and treats this game as if they are artists...and they need to defend their creative process and creative space FROM us.
Its as if they have NO concept that there is a Destiny brand (MMO looter-shooter) and no understanding of the need to HONOR that brand.
Because "brand-identity" informs consumer expectations....and a STABLE brand-identity gives way to consumer TRUST and "brand loyalty".
But because Bungie is all over the map with this game....and seems to just throw whatever seems to be a good idea at the time into the game. Or worse, there always seems to be factional in-fighting WITHIN Bungie over what kind of game Destiny should be.....
....THE CONSUMER IS LEFT ADRIFT.
Like you...I have NO IDEA what to expect from Bungie at this point. We have no idea WHAT kind of game Destiny 3---or whatever the next iteration is----will be. NO. -blam!-ING. IDEA.
...and if you listen to Luke Smith---who seems to be (finally) stepping into that role as a franchise/brand manager....it doesn't seem like he has any idea yet either.
And for a franchise that is 5 years old....and the only viable product of a company with nearly a thousand employees?
That's unconscionably poor leadership. Inexcusable.
