So today I was going through the collections tab, while having a conversation about how a large portion of the loot we have acquired has become obsolete, namely armor sets.
So out of curiosity, I went through collections and counted how many armor sets we have available, and that total is 52 (xbox and pc). That 52 is not including white, green, and blue armor sets, the green and blue solstice of heroes armor, or the tier 1 and 2 gambit prime armor sets, but includes all eververse armor sets from seasons and special events, as well as the baron helmet, chest piece, and class item. This is also not including the ornaments displayed in collections.
I then went through and counted how many armor sets can be acquired with random rolls, once again taking into consideration the above criteria. The total number of armor sets we have available with random rolls is 23. Some who have replied have said that only dreaming city, gambit prime, and raid sets are useful for the ability to roll "enhanced" perks, but at least the others armor sets can drop with perks. I would argue that they still have some semblance of usefulness to those who have either not gotten the enhanced perks they want, nor done the raid.
As I'm sure everyone here knows basic division, this leads to the result that 44 percent of our armor is currently at optimal effectiveness. That means more than HALF of the armor we have in game is effectively useless.
If we could use armor sets from year 1 as ornaments, this would be a suitable fix. I dont know Jack squat about coding, but I can't imagine it is too difficult to change the coding of the remaining armor sets from functioning as "armor" to that of "ornaments." However I doubt bungie would do this due to these ornaments not being a part of the eververse store rotation for the season(s), and thus not possible fuel for microtransactions.
Another suitable fix would be bringing 2 or 3 of these armor sets up to random rolls each passing season, the same way they have some weapons the past couple seasons for crucible and vanguard, like service revolver and last perdition this season.
With how much of these community shares a distaste for the way these year 2 armor sets look, I think we could all agree that year 1 armor could use a revamp.
I dont think I'll ever get around to making a post like this for weapons, as raid weapons show up unknown, so I can't tell what is year 1 or year 2 unless I had all the raid weapons, and besides, ain't nobody got time for that!
Edit: changed format from original because people were whining about the format. Boo hoo
Edit: expanded on a couple of my points after reading some replies

2 Repliesas is the case in progression type games. the same thing took place in D1. any progressive game will not have you in your starter sets. you have zero need to get new sets if your first set is still viable.
