My son has been recently been getting more into gaming as he's been getting older. He was born with a disfigurement in his left hand which keeps his fingers in a claw like hold. Mouse and keyboard are near impossible as he can only type with his right hand. Using a controller is difficult but doable for short periods as it causes him pain after some time. Our work around in most games, as we are on PC, is to use the PS3 nav controller in his left hand and a mouse in his right. This works amazing for him as the nav doesn't stretch is fingers apart as much as a normal controller. The only problem with him playing destiny is the game won't allow both inputs at the same time due to native aim assist with controllers. I've set up a profile for him with xpadder to map the entire nav controller to different keyboard keys. The analog stick works great for WASD. Overall this works for him. The problem is with the game itself. Sometimes it recognizes the nav as a controller and reverts back to its movement and native controls instead of listening to xpadder. These instances are short and quickly corrected by a simple mouse click but ultimately cause more negative situations and some frustration for him.
I am asking for 2 questions with the info I've given above.
1. For other players who may experience similar issues: Have you any better options than xpadder or suggestions on a work around?
2. For the developers. Please consider adding an option to turn off controller aim assist and allow both input devices to work simultaneously like other games.

A way this can be done is though the use of a XIM adapter but I believe it is against tos I feel like I remember a streamer getting banned for it

5 RepliesGlad to see others are offering suggestions of a work around for your first question. I will definitely look into if we can add an option to toggle on/off the smart input switch to allow both devices to act be detected as a M&KB.

A Xim Apex is a great little adapter, allowing you to map different buttons as youve already done, change aim assist and change response curves as well, can get them cheap on EBay, worth having a look at!

So last May I broke both my hands in a motorcycle accident. My wife put thumb tacks to the top of my thumb sticks. This allowed me to play. I had lobster claw casts on both hands. Xbox elite controller helped a lot.

There are two suggestions I can think of, first is xbox's new customizable controller for those with disabilities. It seems to have a wide range of options to help people will many different kinds of disabilities to play video games, and it should work very well on PC, since that has been a bit deal for Microsoft as of late. The second option would be a specialized keyboard/mouse. I did see a video about varies types meant to help with varies hand disabilities. There are keyboards that are designed to do things like go up on an angle for a certain disability where your hands cannot properly go straight down, so there may be one for your son's disability as well. There are also special mice that can basically do all the main functions of a keyboard just on it, could take some getting used to, but seeing as destiny is pretty basic in terms of button layouts, it shouldn't be to bad. As for Bungie coming up with a solution, I might not hold your breath if I were you. There colour blind settings for enemy health bars has been broken since the release of forsaken, and they have still not fixed it, nor said really anything about the issue. It seems they can be very slow when it comes to these types of things, unfortunately.

Have you looked into Microsofts controllers for disabled people?

Try this link? http://www.onearmedgraphics.com/chronic-pain/one-handed-gaming/ My best friend plays with a quad stick controller, but that might not be necessary for your kid. Hope you find something that work.

This would be an accepted case for using a XIM. It always inputs for both M&K and controller at the same time. I usually don't recommend using a xim, but it would definitely help your son!

Good luck! Bumping this

Some people use the controller in a claw like position instead of the ‘normal’ way of holding it. Maybe this could work for him too?
-
have you checked - savant foot switch? they have one with 3 pedals that could be mapped and used by your feet. I don't know if it would be helpful or not. I hope you find a solution for your son, if his wrists are hurting after time I used wrist brace when I had an injury that helped keep my wrist in the right position without discomfort would that be an option or make things worse?

Bump. Good luck, hope you manage to find a solution for the little fella!

Good luck to you brother. Stuff like this is killer. Everyone should be able to enjoy this game and it’s universe. Hope it gets figured out and would love to be able to play with people like this.

Good luck Have a bump!

Hope you can work it out! In destiny one year one, the gun “fate of all fools” (a year one jade rabbit essentially) was given by Bungie to a man who had dealt with brain surgery and was an avid fan. Bungie saw the fan and specially made an exception for him, so hopefully they can do the same for your son! Praying it works!
