I've seen two major sources of conflict in this community since D2 launched. Now yes, there was always issues with D2, but most of it was managable. But, there were two major-league explosions.
One of them was the REMOVE EVERVERSE broughaha.
The second is this, the REMOVES CORES.
And yes, Eververse is still standing. And the cores are still demanded.

Eververse was never going away. The game has to make money. The position on cores, OTOH, is stupid to the point of self-destructiveness.

I more see it as smug, infuriatingly smug. Like the parent who insists that they "know what's best for you" before making you do something you really hate. It's sometimes necessary for parents, but I'm not sure it's such a good idea for game developers.

It is. Except the parent in an insecure teenager. So we all get lectured as if we’re all too dim-witted to understand and appreciate the masterpiece they’ve created. As if. Some of us are mature enough and have enough gaming experience to realize that this core economy was a bad idea that was doomed to failure. But the teenager can’t admit error, so he just keeps defiantly digging in and doubling-down.
