A solo player’s perspective on Gambit Prime

First, I offer these thoughts and ideas as someone who logs a fair amount of game time but considers himself an average skilled player. I solo cue primarily because pretty much every clan I have been a part of has evaporated. I think there are a pretty fair number of players in this game fitting this profile. When Gambit Prime was launched I was very intrigued with the idea of explicit role playing in a coop-competitive mode. Other than the invader role, which I knew I was ill suited for, I consciously decided to approach the mode with an open mind and see where my skills and aptitude’s best fit. To my own surprise, after playing dozens of games on my warlock, titan and hunter, I landed on Sentry. I came to realize pretty quickly that any random team with an effective invader and sentry could put almost any random group in a position to compete. I also realized that sentry was pretty much ignored in most matchmade teams I was a part of. In assuming this team responsibility I made a conscious effort to prepare and play in a way that best supports a team effort. For instance, I suffered mightily through T3 Reckoning (well of radiance warlock) in order to get a full set of T3 sentry gear. Coming in with +15 buffs does make a difference, in particular the ability to mark invaders. My load out/subclass is designed to deal with blockers as efficiently as possible (often dealing with multiple elites solo). In dealing with invaders my primary focus is marking them as odds of defeating one on one are low. I also focus on game phases and adjusting priorities based on where our team is. For example, at the beginning of the round I try to help the reaper with major enemies...as the bank fills I focus on clearing blockers/marking invaders...in boss phase, tracking down invaders is priority while also clearing envoys and DPSIng the boss. I guess the point I am trying to make is that while many may characterize solo players as inept or incapable of team play, this is not the case for many of us. We solo cue because it may be our best option given the dynamics of our clans and our only way to access activities is through matchmaking. As for all solo players my point is that even if you are not participating in a coordinated group you do have responsibility in a team based activity. Learn the mechanics of the activity, the role you are playing - and the best way to play it - and you will enjoy the game much, much more (and maybe make some friends).
