Hide Helmet (and hoods) in combat zones

Keeping the helmet equipped, but allowing us to roam about the open world with the wind blowing on our faces. I want to be able to stare an enemy in the face as my throwing knife hurtles towards them, in true hunter fashion. I want to come face to face with the enemy as my shoulder connects with their body, and sends them flying away, glistening with arc energy and disintegrating. I want to feel the void against my cheeks, as I hurl a Nova into a swarm of enemies, revelling in the carnage. The options already exist to have your helmet off in non-combat zones and to always have your helmet on. Why not add the option to always have it off?

As long as it kills you instantly because the atmosphere isn't hospitable for humans/awoken (exo?). You can be raised by your ghost, but you will continue to die again until you put your gear back on. (I'm not sure how a toxic environment that lacks oxygen would affect an exo.)

      • But what difference would it make to you gameplay wise? If you really want to “feel” like the helmet is equipped, then just turn off the HUD. If Destiny were a 3rd person shooter, I would understand, but what difference would this make for a FPS?

      • Anyone remember grinding for Cloak of Taniks back in D1 to get that hood off your hunter, only to show your helmet? Man that Cloak was so bad ass even more so when in areas where your helmet came off showing off those red exo eyes! (If you were a exo of course...I mean I won't judge what ever creepy face your with now.) ;)

      • It's bad enough that my face changed so much between games, I don't want to see 6 emotionless players killing a Raid boss.

      • Even if this was an option, I would never take advantage of it. It's hard looking like a rejected Beetle and having no choice but to cover up my Guardians face at all times. Forever. Even in cutscenes! I don't know how it happens, I shouldn't have a helmet on, but it's there, and thank the Traveler for that. Letting Uldren see my mug would've been almost unethical. He was a bad guy, but nowhere near deserving of being gunned down by a rejected Beetle that you can SEE.

      • Agree. They should also add in an appearance tab so u can have a 'look' and a 'gear' for your character.

      • You wouldn't even be able to see it though unless you were in a super. I think its a fine idea if third person was an option other than in super/using a special weapon. Otherwise, just seems like a waste of bungies time when they could be fixing bugs and adding content.

        • I like the idea but that woult interrupt the lore massively in some cases: Nessus has no oxygen atmosphere as far as I know. We have some life forms on Nessus but those could still require a different atmosphere condition lile the Na'vi in James Cameron's Avatar. Luna (our moon) has no atmosphere which would be breathable. Titan is a difficult thing. The atmosphere there is not really breathable for humans. From lore we know our guardians can starve to death, freeze to death, burn to death (of course). We can die to graviton. We can die to poison. The problem here is, that I know no real lore information from the canon, which allows guardians to breath everywhere except in space void.

            • Nessus is the only game area where we've not seen characters without helmets so it'd probably work (nessus also likely has a breathable atmosphere)

being forced to wear one out of often times ugly helmets was actually one of the first details in this game that bugged me. why let us pick a face and stuff if we're seeing it so rarely? im always surprised when there is one of those very few players who have their helmets disabled in the tower, and the only reason i keep it on is so i can properly test shader looks inbetween loading times. as far as lore or science goes you could probably, as others have pointed out, tear the game to shreds if you really wanted to. i bet there is something you could come up with some easy explanation. when in doubt you can call magic ("paracausal") or whatever. and while we're at it: seperate armor from skins/visuals. i kinda hate how you can either look cool with trash gear and stats or be super equipped but look ugly. if you're a wannabe MMO, dear destiny, please do it like the good ones where you can look any way you want regardless of armor and stats.

              • What about poison fumes and radiation? And I rather keep my head protected at all cost just in case of random fallen that would randomly appear and shoot me in the head while I'm going for a stroll in any open world.

                • This doesnt make sense at all because you are constantly in environments where there is no atmosphere or oxygen. seeing a human with no helmet running around the surface of the leviathan is just asinine. HOWEVER. if we could choose to hide or not display class items, that would be a godsend. No more dumb hoods or cloaks, no more dish rags for titans, no more glowing neon mood rings on warlocks. And optionally so.

                • I would be cool with it, I would also even be ok with a power drop since you technically aren’t wearing the helmet. Also hunters should be able to wear their hood and not their helmet(like Cayde)

Because it might look weird? Why would a guardian NOT wear a helmet for protection? Not to mention you couldn't see your face. It's an option for social spaces because they are in 3rd person.
