The exotic shotgun Lord of Wolves has the exotic perk “Release the Wolves,” which makes it so that on scoring a kill, the gun reloads and for five seconds, it fires 10-round bursts instead of 5-round bursts.
It’s seems like this was designed on the assumption that a 10-round burst is inherently better than a 5-round burst, but given the ammo economy, that simply isn’t true. Firing 10 shots on one trigger pull makes the gun eats away at your ammo reserves super fast and usually, unless you’re facing a really beefy enemy, the extra shots are overkill anyway. Most of the time I just stow the weapon every time I get a kill with it and wait for Release the Wolves to end because the cost is so much higher than the benefits.
I have a few suggestions on how to fix the issue:
- Remove the 10-round burst entirely and leave the reload on kill as the exotic perk. I don’t necessarily think this is the best option but it is the most direct way to address the problem
- Remove the 10-round burst and replace it with some other powerful effect. I really like the idea of Lord of Wolves getting super-charged after a kill, I just don’t think the 10-round burst is the way to do it. My two suggestions would be make Release the Wolves give either damage buff or a burning effect of some kind
- Keep the 10-round burst, but have it consume only 5 ammo per burst. This would alleviate the ammo issues while maintaining the core design of the perk in its current state

This is exactly why I trashed it an hour after getting it.

6 RepliesWhy do you pvp'ers not know how to effectively communicate? This is why so much gets nerfed in this game.
-
1 ReplyWhy not after a kill increase fire rate
-
Either make the 10 round burst only use 5 ammo or just give it a catalyst that increases ammo reserves by a lot.
-
-blam!- that, let me fire more!
-
Bring back the original perk, where it grants +3 recovery
-
It definitely needs more ammo. Me using it "Oh man this gun is aweso....empty".

2 RepliesEdited by Ubisuccle: 3/17/2019 8:16:16 PMKeep the 10 rd burst, make it consume 5 rds, but make it only last for 3 bursts, and lower the mag size to 20 to make it somewhat balanced.
-
1- Sensitivity level 10 and spread shots in mobs 2- reload fast enough to cancel the perk
-
i cant get it...

3 RepliesI must say I disagree. I use LoW in Gambit for every blocker or high level target and it simply decimates them. That gun is perfect. Ammo drops are low as hell but Bungie has always -blam!-ed that stuff up.
-
I like the final proposal a lot! Sounds like a good idea

Edited by Ray: 3/17/2019 12:55:14 PMI’m pretty sure you’re supposed to kill an ad and then unload on a boss or something. That’s how I use it and I have no problems. It’s not designed to use on ads imo. There’s a reason why it’s the highest dps shotty in the game atm. No comment for pvp tho. I would never use it there
-
1 ReplyEveryone commenting only uses LoW for pve and I have to guess that the OP's complaint comes from pvp. You guys are bad at communicating.
-
1 ReplyLol, it's all how you use the gun, it's intended for you to kill a small ad then unload on a major or boss with the rest of the mag. Release the wolves is the most powerful perk in the game allowing an energy weapon to outdamage 99% of the heavy weapons in the game. So I dont agree with your argument.

I'd prefer it if they made it function exactly like the fallen shrapnel launcher that it's based off. Dunno why they made lord of wolves and dregs promise both burst fire. Ruins the guns IMO.
-
I think have it switch to a slightly longer range 3-shot scatter like normal fallen shrapnel launchers. Perhaps not after kill but maybe have a cycling mechanism like hard light.
-
Nah it does extra damage when the perk is I'm active. Very high dps weapon just need to learn how to control it

Edited by Erijian: 3/16/2019 8:58:23 PMAs an avid LoW user I believe Release the Wolves turns it into a 10 burst solely to prevent the weapon from becoming oppressive in the Crucible because it was actually really good before the SG nerfs and now it's only contested by old Chappy. Because of this you're better off adjusting your playstyle to cater to LoW if you want to run it. Release the Wolves may double your burst but it also increases the damage of each shot by 30%. This gives you two viable options when using it: 1) Use Lord of Wolves to kill a stronger red bar enemy (such as a Wizard or Colossus) and then IMMEDIATELY RELOAD before your magazine is replenished to cancel Release the Wolves to continue using it on weaker enemies or 2) Use Lord of Wolves to kill a weak red bar enemy and then use the Release the Wolves burst to delete an Orange Bar enemy (reload after to cancel perk) or mag dump to output absurd DPS on a Yellow Bar enemy
In Crucible just use the top strategy. You'll kill Guardians with one burst and they'll almost always drop a green brick to cancel Release the Wolves with. The main Crucible strategy is to try to always have ammo in reserve to cancel the perk after every kill (if possible) unless you need to melt a Super with a single Release the Wolves burst.
Hope this helps you get more mileage out of it now that it's become the best DPS Shotgun in the game. Just remember that Release the Wolves doesn't just double the burst but also increases damage by 30%.

I was toying with the idea of making it full auto on a kill, but i'm not sure if that would benefit the weapon in any way. I think it would alleviate the ammo problem due to you being able to control the fire rate of the weapon, but i'd much rather they replace the perk with something else entirely.
-
It's a simple fix. The 10 round burts only uses 5, and a kill with the perk active reloads the gun and adds a small DOT to it.
-
The 10 round burst decimates mobs if you can swivel fast enough. It's excellent as is and a beast of a weapon.

5 RepliesI wish I could actually get the damn thing just to finish my collections badge.
-
Modify it to act like Trench Barrel. Melee doubles shots per burst.
-
Or just make it a kill clip effect.
