I see a ton of nerf defenders trot out some variant of “hit your crits”, “whisper has infinite ammo”, et cetera.
It is deceptive and only shows the lack of experience of those who say it.
If you just use Whisper for boss DPS (and you hit crits), then you won’t feel the ammo reduction. If, however, you use this exotic sniper rifle to, you know, snipe (enemy here, enemy there, whoops out of enemies, no whitenail for you), then this reduction in reserves is a MASSIVE change.
Scourge of the Past is a good example. A lot of people run Whisper and use it to take out the generators and the odd sniper here and there. Very, very, rarely can you get whitenail to proc doing this. With 9 rounds only, it’s possible to hit every crit, and yet have no ammo for boss DPS.
Note this post is intended to rebut the “it has infinite ammo” chestnut. It is not about load outs or other strategies.

8 RepliesI want Icebreaker back.

The only time I even use it is in raids specifically for DPS, great way to make the gun completely useless for anything else. It should have atleast been 12 rounds for -blam!-s sake.

15 RepliestHiS wEaPoN wAs MeAnT fOr BoSs DpS oNlY. Shut up everyone of you who use this as an excuse. People can use weapons however they want, exotics are no exception. And don’t you dare bring up reserves perk. Why waste an armor slot on that when there are obviously better perks out there. 12 rounds all together is disgusting, and this weapons hits no harder in the body than any other 3 mag sniper, so no it’s not overpowered. It has such bad stability and flinch that it’s not even accurate enough to be deadly when under fire. Anyone who complained about this weapon must’ve just been beaten senseless by it in gambit alone. Strange how this nerf came up from a gamemode that prioritizes boss killing speed and LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE ironically......

1 ReplyTo be honest even against bosses in many cases it doesn't have infinite ammo because there tends to be a few bugs where it either won't count a crit, or just doesn't seem to prock the white nail perk. If you are going to reduce the ammo then you should first fix the issues with the perk you seem to have an issue with, simple as that. It seems that if something gives the players an advantage it is typically addresses way before any issues that give players a disadvantage or cause issues. When killing calus you will see the yellow Crit numbers pop up, but the white nail perk will not activate, in scourge, the boss sometimes just ignores Crits. You will fire, and nothing will pop up, if you miss immune or low damage numbers pop up, but not in this case, in this case the boss just eats the shot and you get nothing. It is absolute nonsense. These kinds of issues should be fixed before any kind of "rebalancing", since they directly screw up the weapon and the perk in question.

1 ReplyIt's a heavy weapon meant for boss dps. That's literally what it's made for, that's what it's always been made for. If you use your heavy weapon to take out the occasional sniper you're doing it wrong. That's like whipping out your rocket launcher to kill the occasional sniper, THAT'S POOR HEAVY USAGE.

2 RepliesWhisper is a boss sniper, I’ve never used it for anything else because it’s overkill. What, a trash mob? The majors? Better off using up your exotic slot elsewhere and running a high impact sniper, I never saw a reason to whisper with anything else, it’s a boss killer, it’s damage is way overkill on anything else.
-
2 RepliesTldr: OP cant aim.
-
2 RepliesNo it has unlimited ammo. If you are shooting non criticals you are using it wrong. Do you use monarque and aim for the body? Trinity ghoul? If you want 20 rounds build a sniper reserve armor set or just hit your headshots.
-
5 RepliesSo use another long-range weapon to take out the Vandals? The weak points on Insurrection Prime’s shield take one shot from Whisper of the Worm when Whispered Breathing is active. Assuming the worst case scenario in which only one person is shooting all the weak spots, they would still have enough ammo to utilize White Nail during the damage phase.

25 RepliesBungie has this ideology that you don't want one weapon to be a "jack of all trades." With the nerf to whisper, it is only worth using for boss damage now. Yes, it is stupid, its suppose to be a strong exotic, but here we are.
-
2 RepliesI like the nerf honestly. What you are saying you use Whisper for isn't the use of the gun. The gun is supposed to be a workhorse DPS/sustain machine. Not a add clear. You could use guns like 1K or Machine guns to kill "one enemy here, one there". The purpose of Whisper is Boss DPS and it still does that phenomenally. Quit your complaining.
-
lol you have sniper options in both your primary and secondary Weapon slots for adds.
-
1 ReplyExcept Whisper isn’t intended for ad clearance.

3 RepliesBungie ran through and nerfed the PvE meta, that's what really happened. Riven - Clusters - Nerf. Insurrection Prime - Whisper - Nerf. Forge/strikes - LMG/Sleeper - Nerf. But six months later 180 HC's are still the meta and there's no sign that they're going to do anything there.... Guys you're in the litter box, not the sand box.

I think what gets me about nerfing whisper ammo is, it's not a weapon that drops in the wild, this weapon was earned by defeating a fairly difficult mission that was a secret. not only that, in order to have whisper proper, you had to beat the mission three different times with different burns in order to get whispered breathing (catalyst). 3 weeks this step took. why introduce such a strong weapon if you know its going to imbalance the game? then when you realize you're mistake you nerf it instead of bringing up a few heavy weapons to compete so it's not THE one weapon everyone goes to. at least they didn't nerf the damage, I guess.....

5 RepliesThere was NO NEED for a whisper ammo nerf. None whatsoever.
-
2 RepliesThis nerf takes away the gun’s flexibility and makes it much much more situational. I don’t see this loss of freedom as a good thing.
-
1 ReplyYeah, this horrendously overdone nerf has radically reduced player choice. I used to use Whisper to pop enemy shields every now and then (and just reloaded immediately so I only lost 1 bullet). You don't dare do that now as you've just wasted over 10% of your ammo and 3 total misses to only 2 total misses before being out of ammo. Where it was with 20 - 24 bullets total was just fine. My playstyle is a Sniper and I'll always have that weapon equipped (it is the only reason I ever returned to D2 after quitting early in D1). Now they've just removed a lot of fun and player choice from the game.

6 RepliesYou use your heavy weapon to kill adds???
-
Well no but actually yes
-
5 RepliesI'm against all nerfs. Why made something fun to be less fun?
-
18 RepliesThe Whisper nerf is total bullshit. Unless I'm shooting a static boss with a crit spot the size of Luke Smiths asshole I'll run out of ammo right away. I suck at sniping.
-
They’re trying to make it exclusively for boss DPS. Try using a regular sniper to, ya know... snipe

4 RepliesEdited by Eatz: 3/6/2019 3:25:33 PM
If you just use Whisper for boss DPS (and you hit crits), then you won’t feel the ammo reduction.
1. It’s meant for boss damage. If you wanna snipe like you’re suggesting, use a special sniper. 2. You’re also only talking about 1 encounter in 1 raid. (I’ve gotten white nail to proc numerous times on the vandals, just don’t miss) 3. If you don’t miss, this nerf does not apply to you. Don’t complain if you can’t land your shots. Just because YOU aren’t good with something doesn’t mean it’s a bad weapon. I don’t even see this as a nerf, just even more incentive to not miss.
