How did the Drifter is Dredgen Yor theory not die out immediately?

Listen, I can kinda understand this theory before forsaken released as we hadn't known anything about this Drifter character prior to this DLC. Now would it have been cool to have Dredgen Yor back? I guess... I mean I wouldn't have exactly praised anyone at Bungie for bringing him back as a totally different character but at the same time I probably would have moved on. But here's the thing... Now that Forsaken is out, and we've all read his lore cards... HOW IS THE THEORY STILL A THING AT THAT POINT!? Do you really think Shin would forget how the man who killed two of his father figures looked like? Did the fact that he owned a bar not set things off? Did his entire ice escaped not contradict everything about Yor's origin?! I don't even know why I'm pretending to be angry? I guess I'm just trying to be more entertaining then I actually am, BUT MY POINT STILL STANDS!

  • What if he was? What if after Dredgen Yor was finally killed, along with his ghost I presume, another ghost came along and ressurected his body and essentially became a "new" person, much like we could possibly be seeing with Prince Uldren at the moment.

I dunno... retcon is a powerful word. Probably the same reason that, in D1, we allowed Rasputin to get to Mars... even though his entire complex is already on Mars... And ffs it's not even a hidden complex. Like, somehow the Cabal didn't see the gigantic pyramid of a 'secret complex' that is constantly shooting annoying satellites into space 24/7. Even though they had the planet so locked down so well you couldn't even transmat a sparrow safely... Not to mention 'Anna's search' for Rasputin is equally as ridiculous. Again, how hard could it possibly be to find? So easy that Zavala magically appeared inside Rasputin's Mind Room without the need for clearance, going through guards, or without any extraneous effort whatsoever. Meanwhile, in D1, if you got within 5000ft of a Rasputin Complex you were under threat from orbiting weapons of mass destruction that would be bring death and calamity without a second thought. But when it comes to his mind core? Nah fam, let's let absolutely everyone in. No problem. Totally what Rasputin would allow. He didn't like... just completely murder several dozen (up to a hundred?) Iron Lords just because he didn't think it was okay for them to get close to SIVA. Going even so far as to activate SIVA and consuming the remaining Iron Lords that made it to the complex. (Which means, clearly, Rasputin has no problems using an unstoppable force for his whims and demands.) Ugh. I liked the D1 Rasputin better.

          • How? People play the game, but don't know the lore. Those who know the lore know that Shin Malphur is "The Man with the Golden Gun", and has been face to face with The Drifter. There is no way that Shin Malphur would have failed to recognize Dredgen Yor. Its also clear that "Dredgen" is a title associated with The Shadows of Yor, and Malphur is going around eliminating them as they fall to the corruption of The Darkness as Yor eventually did. The Emissary of the Nine referring to him as "Dredgen" is just confirmation that The Drifter was a member of the Shadows of Yor...which people into the lore already suspected.

              • Dredgen isn't a person, it's a title. The emissary asked if he was Dredgen, and once upon a time he was. Nobody said anything about Yor being alive or coming back.

                • I think its the normies that are proliforating this misunderstanding, they hear "Dredgen" and auto-fill "Yor", they dont know that dredgen has been expanded to a title, despite THE IN GAME TITLE SYSTEM INCLUDING IT!

                    • However unlikely i suppose it's possible that after the events of Dwindler's Ridge, Rezyl Azzir's ghost resurrected him and he started calling himself the Drifter. If Shin's golden gun had burned the corruption out of Yor I feel like he could be reborn and return. I feel like it's unlikely to happen, but would be really interesting if it did.

                      • The lore clearly shows he was one of the first Risen, before there were Guardians. He can't have been Dredgen, or even the reincarnation, cause they were both doing stuff at the same time. I like the idea of Drifter better. Instead of a super evil big bad, he's just an amateur researcher studying how darkness and light works, and happened to find a giant space rock he's dragging around and keeps some Taken pets. I know they're trying to build him up as badass, but that just story makes him sound like an off center homeless lunatic. It's hilarious and I love it.

                          • It's been confirmed by the ViDoc for season six that he is in fact a Dredgen (a real one, not a title), just not Yor himself. I don't hear anything about Drifter=Yor theories, so unless it's on Reddit, your post is irrelevant.

                            • He's a dredgen of yor. You know one of those guys that followed what he was about. Bad part is he was smart enough to play his cards alittle closer to the chest and not be stupid enough to fall head over into darkness. Also he said once we collected the last word he said that gun killed one of his best friends. Best friend either being yor himself or one of his friends that followed what he was about. Because only shin malpher at this point had the gun and was killing anyone who followed the darkness like dredgen yor.

                              • The thing is, it’s never stated if shin actually saw yor’s face, as I’m pretty sure he wore a mask. But the only thing I have supporting my version of the theory is another theory that yor’s ghost returned to him thinking the flair of light from shin’s golden gun was yor returning to his old identity of rezzil azzir, and accepting fact and joining yor once reality reared its ugly head. Yor than laid low and grabbed a new identity after resurrection knowing what would happen if he was found out. This led to his change in tactics and him becoming the drifter we know. But that’s just my theory behind the theory, so it’s a lot of maybes.
