In defense of "I'm quitting"

When someone leaves an "I'm quitting Destiny" post on the forums, it's usually greeted with excessive derision or an opportunity to get in some cheap shots at Bungie. I take these posts seriously. As someone who's taken a break a couple of times during my Destiny years, I've thought about a farewell letter to Bungie a time or two. Sure, it's seems like pitiful, self-serving "look at me" stuff, but I think it has a place. People leave these posts to let Bungie know how passionate they really are about the game, and how certain aspects of it are driving them away. Yes, it's just a game, but if you're even here reading this post on a game forum, it's obviously a little more than that. It's what we use for recreation, to unwind, or challenge ourselves, or just feel a little better after a long day. That's a huge thing, and with a game as good as Destiny (yes, at the core it's good, you can't deny it), players can be frustrated when the game feels like it's being stripped away one piece at a time with balance changes, lack of content, poor narrative and content release mishaps. If it gets bad enough that they feel they just can't play anymore and want to quit, that frustration has to go somewhere, and the best (only) place to do it is here, on the forum. Remember something too, those posts aren't for you. They aren't mocking your ability to still have fun playing, and they aren't dictating how you do anything. These posts are to the devs, in hopes that maybe if they see someone has gotten so frustrated that they feel like leaving, maybe something will change. Is it attention seeking? Absolutely! How else will the devs notice? By sifting through reams of anonymous data where player exodus is measured in a bar chart? The forums give players a personal outlet where they can try to be heard. Is there a right way to quit? Yeah, there is. "Destiny sux" is not constructive feedback and anyone who feels the need to insult the devs or other players in as toxic a fashion as some do can just disappear quietly. But if someone is choosing the door and has something constructive to say, however passionately, I hope the devs are willing to listen. So go easy on the quitters. Understand that they care as much about the game as you do. Understand that they might have feedback that benefits you too, and remember that's one less player in the queue when you log in after they leave. Protests like this are time-honored, and if someone actually feels like leaving the game is the only option, I hope Bungie takes that seriously.
