How Does the Vanguard Hierarchy Work?
It’s obvious that Zavala is the highest rank—Commander, but what are Ikora’s and Cayde-6’s place? The only thing we know is that they, like Zavala, are the Guardian mentors of their respective class, but that doesn’t seem to hold an official position in the military. I’ve always viewed them as the Executive Officers (XO) of the Vanguard, but then that begs the question why is Sloane the Deputy Commander (usually associated with a second-in-command) when she is merely a field scout. It seems odd that only a select few of Guardians in the vanguard have a distinguishing title to their rank.
I don’t know why I care so much about this, but it somehow just came to peak my interest.
What do y’all think?

1 ReplyThe flowing structure seems to be this: All average guardians- Reporting in on what they are seeing in the field. Scout guardians- Ikora (the hidden), Zavala (specialized titans), Cayde-6 formerly (stealth based hunters) investigate the area and report back on what is being found. Vanguard assembly- This rank is reserved solely for all vanguard leaders (including Shaxx, Speaker (formerly), ect.) to report things internally to each other and likewise, if the City is to be informed, prepare a PR message for them (Scourge raid for example)) Vanguard Second- Currently Sloane goes to heavily needed sites. Likewise, Ikora could deploy someone, if available for overseeing IO or another relevant spot. These second in command is utilized by a position or authority which answers to their respective commander. Vanguard Commander- The big 3. 2 now till Cayde gets replaced. Why is it there is three vanguard commanders? Because Warlocks are not going to follow central figure. Titans will not follow others. Hunters. Ha... The respective commanders determine who is best suited to be the alpha among them by election and inner circle. The Tower vanguard commander though is Zavala by that election. Previously it was Osiris.

I believe that Vanguard and Vanguard Commander are different roles all together. Vanguard relates to the class and the “leadership” role they play towards their respective class. Commander relates to the military position and ordering of personnel. Note Zavala usually introduces a large majority of the strikes (ones officiated by the City).

Zavala probably coordinates the City defense, Ikora the research and Cayde coordinated the scouts and everything related to exploration. This is all in addition to being mentors of course. Strikes seem to be coordinated by all of them. The city itself is run by the Consensus , which houses the Speaker (rip), representatives from the Factions (NM, FWC, DO) and the three Vanguard commanders.

I always assumed that the three vanguard members dealt with different aspects of the city and the work of the Guardians, and had no real hierarchy, and that Zavala’s title was mostly irrelevant to his status in the Vanguard. Zavala deals with strikes, Ikora deals with information, Cayde dealt with various patrols/scouting things.
