Competitive Glory Rank change suggestion

With all the discussion on Competitive Glory Rank, I’ve chimed in on a few threads and one suggestion I’ve made had had some positive feedback. The change would see locked ‘checkpoints’ when you reach certain rank milestones. My original suggestion is for each sub rank (such as Brave 1, Brave 2, Brave 3 etc) to act as a checkpoint you can’t drop below, but if that’s too generous, it could be each main rank (Brave 1, Heroic 1, Fabled 1 etc). Let’s take sub ranks as the example. Say you are Brave 1. You cannot drop below Brave 1 back to Guardian 3 as Brave 1 is your locked checkpoint. In your matches towards Brave 2 you’ll have wins and losses. Your rank score will go up and down accordingly, but you won’t drop below Brave 1. You could be one win away from Brave 2, but lose enough to go back to the start of Brave 1. Once you do reach Brave 2 though, that becomes your new locked checkpoint. You now can’t drop below it. You could change it to work on main ranks instead of sub ranks, so once you reach Heroic 1 for instance, you can’t drop below it, but you could be high up in Heroic 3 and lose enough to go back to the start of Heroic 1. I personally would rather see it based on sub ranks from my first example though. To get to fabled or beyond, it’s still going to require a lot of matches and you definitely can’t make it if you keep losing as you’ll need wins to reach each sub rank as a new checkpoint. In my opinion this would help ease the pain of a lot of the complaints around Comp’s matchmaking, solos V stacks, unbalanced weapons and sub classes etc.

  • Or instead of just locking it off so you can't drop out use a strike system. If you get into fabled for example, and you lose a game right after, you don't lose points but you get 1/3 checks. If you lose again you in succesion, you get 2/3 etc... Once you get to 3/3 you drop out of your rank 2x the normal amount for a loss.

  • I like this idea, but only to a point... It's definitely a step in the right direction, but rather than being a "set-in-stone" milestone/marker of your "Matchmaking" rank (the rank that your matchmaking is based off of), it might be best if the decay on that rank is drastically slower. For example: It would take 4 Losses of your "Matchmaking Rank" to equal the same net loss to your more visible Glory Rank. In other words, there's still "fair" decay, but it's much slower. In general practice, your behind the scenes Matchmaking Rank would always be greater than your more visible Glory Rank (although I say "behind the scenes" Matchmaking Rank, I do think it'd be nice if there was at least a "milestone" or "Matchmaking Rank" indicator/marker stating where your currently sitting as far as matchmaking goes). And this decay could become even slower at much higher Competitive Rank levels. This would make it a LOT harder for crazy good players to drop down low enough in rank to troll players in the sub 1000's, but would also protect players from ever being able to match up with their "current" skill level if their pvp skills ever dwindle (which happens, and without some sort of decay could make someone never want to pick up the game again, whether they were good at one time or not). Anyways, I like your system, I just think there should still be at least "some" decay to the Matchmaking Rank in your proposed solution.

  • Simple solution.... competitive rumble. That way I can be judged purely on my skills alone and not those of my friends / whoever bungie match makes me with

    • I’m cool with current comp. just change the point loss system once you hit fabled and beyond. It’s ridiculous that you a single loss -30 points while a win is +20. Even worse in mythic.

      • I do like the idea, other games use a simillar system, though in a team-based game I do fear for trolls and such. If you cant drop below a rank it might entice people to troll or lose games on purpose if they dislike their team since there is no real drawback - even at fabled and beyond. Either way it would require more action to be taken when a report is filed...but then you have an issue of mass reporting since there is no drawback to reporting either. The competitive game mode is simply not enough of a priority...compared to a game like say CS:GO where competitive is essentially the only mode for them to make a comprehensive reporting system (like overwatch).

        • No more loss points. The “reward” for “achievement” is worthless now because so many games the bad system or paid someone else to do it for them. Might as well just make it a really long grind for bad players and a quicker one for good players.

        • The pain surrounding Glory rank is strictly due to Bungie offering pinnacle rewards for reaching a minimum rank. If there were no rewards for 'being at least this good', then this wouldn't be a conversation. The ranked playlist was asked for because players wanted to see how they measured up, and wanted a place to match against similarly-skilled opponents. Bungie has decided to tighten matchmaking to Glory rank match-ups, which means your system of not allowing someone to fall below a checkpoint would necessarily lead to them matching players of higher skill over and over again. The solution isn't to prevent falling or to increase rising. It's to [b][i]remove the incentive to reach a certain skill bracket[/i][/b]. We already have that incentive, inherently. These skill-based rewards ONLY incentivize cheating/carries/recovs/sweat-like-you've-never-seen-before, and also complaints about moving DOWN the ranks. Rewards should reward investment, not talent. Because rewarding talent in this fashion has lead to a basically unplayable experience... In my opinion, that is...

              • Saying this for months. Im not good enough to get lunas and i know it. Dont want a hand out. I want to earn it and have hovered on the same glory for weeks. I also agree that it should be a challenge to get and should be earned or else whats the incentive In my eyes this recognises all the effort and matches won, if your a player like me, over the whole season if thats how long it takes me. It also still feels like im punished for a loss, i might stay on the brave cap 3 at 0 for weeks but ill never be reverted to a complete zero and gives me incentive to push to get there I am all for this idea

                    • I'm okay with how it is now but that would be pretty refreshing for others that give up too soon. Then again, it seems like tons of people reached Fabled regardless since Season 4.

                    • I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to the competitive ranking system but I really like this idea. It gives some more meaningful milestones along that long grind and would encourage people to stick with it.

                      • If someone disagrees with this, I would really like to know why. Honestly, comp is so annoying and this would fix the majority of the problems within. I hope this gets implemented!

                          • Good idea. Sub-ranks are currently useless. They could be relevant this way by using them as check-points. However, I still believe simply removing point loss would solve most comp issues & bring in significantly more players to the playlist. No one likes losing days/weeks of progress. Unfortunately, we are dealing with a highly incompetent company who never listens to feedback, as comp has been criticized since over half a year ago, yet Bungie is still sitting on their asses barely doing anything to keep the game relevant or fresh. I guess they have enough money for once & don’t want more. Or they’re just short-sighted. Oh well. They should keep the current system if they want to keep losing customers.

                              If you que as a solo and win you should be awarded more comp score. If you que as a solo and you lose, you should not be penalized as heavy. Note that this is dependent on how you are qued. For example, it 8 solos match, no addition score is awarded and no reduction in points lost if you lose. Have this scale accordingly.

                              I like this "sub rank lock" suggestion. I would add that -30 points per loss is too many from the start at least, it should be more like Guardian - Brave= -10, Brave - Heroic = -20, Heroic - Fabled = -30 which is where point loss should bottom out. I think something like that would also be less demoralizing which in turn would promote less quitting from matches (in spite of the penalties) and promote more play time in competitive over all. The problem I see is, Bungie has been fairly reluctant to listen to reason. So I doub't this will amount to anything. Never the less I support it.

                            • This would be an improvement. I wouldn't mind if they made it so the first loss just broke your streak and you only lost points for consecutive losses.

                            • Nice work, Havok. This is pretty smart and the smartest idea I've seen that preserves what Bungie is trying to do and the push back you'll get from die-hard competitive purists. It's a good middle ground. We could use more people with good ideas that can make reseasonable, positive compromise toward a solution. I'll start printing the "Havok 2020" posters.
