Can someone explain to me how Shards of Galanor *actually* works?

Not talking about PvP just for reference. Shards seem to be one of the more inconsistent exotics in D2 right now, despite its easy to understand function in the tooltip. Although it returns super energy on Blade Barrage hits and kills, I feel like it works inversely. Should I land my entire super on an a boss or group of enemies, I'll get between 1 to 2 seconds worth of super regen, with the occasional 3 seconds. Yet should I miss the entire crowd of enemies, and only hit one or two knives on high health targets, I'll get my entire super back. Is the purpose of Shards to be a buffer for poor usage, or to encourage good super plays? Because I sure as hell don't understand.

 • Spread it out to hit two areas of enemies, and the second wave counts more if one is bigger make sure you do that one with the second wave. if there is even a single higher than red bar use the second wave on that

 • I don't understand it myself. Take out 4 red bars - get half my energy back. Take out 3 yellow bars - get 1/3 my energy back. In crucible I see it is much more consistent where the more guardians I take out the more energy I get back, but in PvE it is all over the place.
