Like the title suggests, I've been trying to wrap my head around how the Hive on the tangled shore work from a lore perspective.
As I'm sure you all know, the bulk of the Hive presence on the map is located in a crashed scouting ship from the Dreadnought. Now for about 5 minutes my thought process was: oh they must be what's left of Oryx's brood. Then I realized how little that makes sense, Oryx died and created a power vacuum that lead to the death of basically every single high ranking Hive leader in his brood. Without anyone leading them all the hive from earth to Saturn died of starvation, not to mention the models used in D2 represent savathun's army, not Oryx or Crotas.
I then thought that the Hive near the crashed ship belonged to Hiraks, but that doesn't make sense because the Scorn attack them regularly and Hiraks' own mindbent Hive fight other non mindbent Hive.
So that only leaves savathun right? then I realized... If that's the case then there are two ways that her brood got there
1. They escaped from the prison of Elders and decided to make a temporary living space in one of Oryx's ship's
2. Savathûn sent them there
Now the first explanation would actually be kinda cool, a little sub category of Hive that are just fending for themselves (because fun fact there actually isn't any sign of savathûn's followers on the tangled shore, all the named Hive have nothing to do with her in their titles) and don't care about what the rest of the pantheon is doing. The second explanation is actually really dangerous because it means that whatever is in the crashed ship has attracted savathûn's eye, and that we've been so distracted with hunting down the Barons and protecting the dreaming city we've forgotten all about them.
But that's just my theory, feel free to tell me yours down below

4 RepliesEdited by Bigfoots Son: 1/6/2019 10:03:01 PMThe Hive don't starve without a leader, because they aren't fed BY their leaders. They FEED their leaders. The tithing system dictates that each Hive kills and takes enough to feed it's own worm (as much as it dares) then tithe the rest up the chain. In this way, Oryx et al are made stronger by their minions. If a void appears in Hive leadership, then others can ascend to fill it. A good example is Alak Hûl, the Darkblade. When Oryx died his true death, Eris feared he would try to rise up and take Oryx's place. Also remember that Hive 'evolve' through killing and through the Sword Logic. If a Thrall kills enough it can become and Acolyte. If an Acolyte kills enough it can become a Knight or Wizard. These in turn can become Ascendant. Oryx, Savathûn and Xivu Arath aling with their offspring are wickedly powerful, but basically the Hive equivalent of the Royal Family. If they die, the Hive's total strength would be significantly lessened, but they wouldn't be wiped out. So long as their were things to kill, of course. On the Tangled Shore, they could have spent the years killing Fallen, Cabal, any Awoken survivors of the Battle of Saturn. In addition, since the Scorn are undead and capable of resurrection, it's possible they are being used as fodder to power up Hiraks' brood... Basically, these are a mixture of Oryx's surviving forces, now under the control of Hiraks and In Anânh, who have risen to fill the power void. I hope this helps :)

I think that the Leader of the Hive on the Shore are belonging to Hiraks's second in command, which is that big 1/2 shadow 1/2 Hive Wizard. She may have been in charge before The scorn came along, then Hiraks, with his infinite wisdom of Hive everything, came and took a piece of the group for himself, including their leader.

The whole brood thing frustrates me. I think it all boils down to Bungie just flat out not caring that these Hive should have D1 models, as they’ve demonstrated with some other races. Take the Vex, we only see one directive across Nessus, Io, and the Prison of Elders. It just doesn’t make sense. It works for Fallen, all under one house, and Cabal, only under the Red Legion, but they need to go back to splitting directives and broods

Savathun wanted to take the Dreaming City. The Tangled Shore is the entrance to it. So she stationed her Hive there for an assault.

1 ReplyIts in the lore one of the scorn idiots took a hivebrood queen as his "consort" looking to see if the hive can be corrupted like the fallen were with the dark ether
-
4 RepliesWhy would hive die of starvation without a leader that makes no sense
-
Mindbender grabbed a Hive Brood mother, there's your explanation. PS exclusive explanation.
-
This is what happens when Congress refuse to pay for walls....
-
The game had been hinting at other hive gods like savathun, so the ship could be of her brood
-
That's you're problem, you're thinking about lore. They're an infestation, they're everywhere.
-
They are your mother's side of the family.

I’ll just leave this oldie but goldie here.... http://youtu.be/KeMh0lMAKNk

I imagine it's Savathûn sustaining the Hive that remain throughout the system. One Oryx fell, as the Hive started dwindling, it stepped in and took over Oryx's throne from outside the system, while sending in all of its own enforcers and high ranking followers.

7 RepliesIm pretty sure they're just stuck there mate. The whole crashed ship thing, ya know?

18 RepliesI'm just trying to figure out why the Vex are the only enemy type not found there.

Edited by Spooks: 1/6/2019 7:25:09 PMi always felt like it was savathûns brood, including ir anânh, invading and setting up shop. same with grasp of nokris, they look more like savathûns brood than oryx’s so i bet they were from her

6 RepliesThe hive are breed by In Ananh. She is Hiraks consort as far as I know. In the strike the Broodhold at the begining it will explain this.
-
2 RepliesIt might be Xivu’s Hive...
-
5 RepliesIt's neither of those. Bungie needed another enemy type to cover the area. The only enemy left to place there with the Scorn is the Hive. Remember that quote from an earlier time, "the Hive like the dark"? Then what are they doing out in the sunlight? They began underground in The Dark Below and now they are sunbathers.

4 RepliesEdited by Teko: 1/6/2019 5:44:35 AMWhat if Hiraks fed them Scorn, seen as Scorn can be revived?

2 RepliesI have no idea where I am now or what I am reading, but I just woke after eating 14 bags of twinkies.

well seeing as they live near a crashed ship called the jetsam of saturn. I think they came from the ship which was with oryx's fleet at saturn
-
4 RepliesThe mindbender was attempting to breed with the broodmother from the strike. Attempting to Make aether infused hive he could control

11 RepliesEdited by One Shot Ted: 1/6/2019 10:12:02 AM1) The strike with the Broodmother basically answers this whole thread. Go play it. 2) Even if #1 wasn't the case, one can interpret from the area's name, "Jetsam of Saturn," that all of the stuff there was basically debris from the area around Oryx's Dreadnought (presumably when it fired its weapon, decimating everything in a massive radius). Hive probably survived the wreckage and got to work, erm... "repopulating" the area.

11 RepliesWell, in my opinion Bungie is kinda lazy: They got all the Cabal in a single Legion; They got all the Fallen in a single House; There seems to be one Vex Collective for all the planets; And the Hive have either Refrigerated and Non-Refrigerated type
-
6 RepliesThe majority of them are basically leftovers from oryx fleet of ships when he launched his attack on the awoken
