Who is Immortal and How?

I am new to the game, and trying to make sense of the extensive lore. The Guardians are immortal, since our Ghosts can resurrect us using the Light. Some Hive are immortal, because they have "throne worlds". These seem to use Darkness in a symmetrical way to what our Ghost does. One of the Fallen barons had a throne world. Mara Sov does too. None of the Cabal, Fallen (besides that baron), or Taken are immortal, correct?

  • Immortal can be an interesting term because riven of a thousand voices may be dead but she transcends death and still exists in this universe. Most hive gods are immortal but there is a way to beat this is by destroying there soul and then there actually god form in there throne world like we did to Crota and oryx. I don’t think many of the beings we fought have true immortality but can live eternally

  • The Cabal and Fallen lack any sort of psionic powers or magical entities for Immortality. Granted they still live incredibly long lives compared to a Human of today, but they are still mortal. The Taken are a fringe case. It's unknown if they do die when we shoot them, they just get sucked back into some sort of void. As for living forever, I doubt living as a Taken would be Living at all.

There’s a lot to the lore in this game, there used to be grimoire cards on Bungie.net that you could unlock as you played the game and linked your account. Bungie removed them when Destiny 2 came out, you can still read it though. A lot of it is pretty good: http://destiny-grimoire.info I recommend the books of sorrow if you’re interested in hive lore.

  • To understand how the Taken are inherently immortal, one must understand how Throne Worlds work. Throne Worlds are little pockets of the much larger Ascendant Realm. Which the Taken are basically a part of, from my understanding. You ever wonder where the Taken are sucked into when they die? The Ascendant Realm.

  • The Hive are currently in this demonic pact with the creatures known as the worm gods, the deal is that if the Hive keep killing and feeding their worms then they get to live forever. If they can't feed their worn then they themselves get eaten from the inside Cabal have extremely long life spans although it's not exactly known how long they usually live for The Fallen also have long lifespan but are not immortal. Although due to their heavy reliance on technology some Fallen have turned themselves into cybernetically enhanced super solders who can basically live forever, the devil splicers and Taniks the scared are good examples The vex are robot's... Yeah they live forever The taken are immortal due to the fact that their bodies are being piloted by the taken goo which is heavily connected to the darkness, although some taken can actually form their own minds The Awoken... Are weird. We don't know if they can live forever but the certainly have very very long lifespans considering how Mara Sov has been alive since the collapse The scorn are immortal due to the fact that their ether is infected by the darkness through wish dragon magic (look it up) which gives them not only the ability to not age but be revived from the dead if killed

    • Technically none of these are immortal. Guardians can be resurrected by their Ghosts so long as their ghosts can access the light (some areas are filled with Darkness and ghosts have limited power), or as long as the ghost is alive. Ghosts can be killed fairly easily if there is an opening to do so, like an Achilles heel. Hive create throne worlds by worshipping the darkness through something they call the Sword Logic. Basically if you kill things you are strong and it makes you stronger, and if you are killed you are weak and you deserved to die. Super aggressive natural selection. If they practice this enough and become strong enough, they can define their own existence as a god or a sort of Demi-god. These hive are called Ascendant Hive. If an Ascendant Hive is killer, it retreats back into its Throne World basically to heal up and can return under certain circumstances. If an Ascendant Hive is killed in their Throne World, the death is true. The Fallen Baron, Hiraks, REALLY wanted to be hive even though he was Fallen. So he just imitated the Hive and since he practiced the same worship, he developed a throne world after killing enough. The death of Cayde-6 which he received partial credit for allowed him to develop a throne world, or dramatically increase the size of his. The circumstances of Maras throne world are unclear. She made it on purpose, but we don’t know exactly how other than awoken magic and potentially Riven. While Taken are also of the darkness, they don’t have throne worlds because all taken are subservient to whoever took them, so Oryx, Quria, Riven, Savathun or potentially others.
