Reposting this, since it got lost in the sea of other posts. (Plus I’m kinda proud of it).
Holy crap, looking into this has made me realize how many similarities the two universes have. Let’s begin by going over some common themes and similarities:
Nyarlathotep and Savathûn: If any of you know anything about this Outer God, you know exactlywhat I’m talking about. Nyarlathotep is an incredibly cunning, scheming Outer God from the Mythos, who enjoys making us our playthings. He can take on nearly any form, and deceiving is what he does best.
Sound familiar?
Gol-Goroth and Golgoroth: This one is also pretty obvious, hence the name. Gol-Goroth is basically a massive toad (not the Mushroom Kingdom kind) who has a disturbing, piercing, constant gaze. Golgoroth in the King’s Fall Raid, also has a debug where it focuses it’s gaze upon a target. Much less toad like, but the resemblance name and ability wise is uncanny.
The Blackness From the Stars and the Heart of the Black Garden:
The Blackness from the Stars is an immobile blob of living, sentient darkness, torn from the primal fabric of the cosmos at the center of the universe. It is distinguishable in darkness only as vaguely shimmering oily pitch. Although intelligent, it speaks no known language and ignores attempts to communicate.
Do I really need to clarify this one?
Darkness and TheDarkness: Nothing is really given on this Outer God, besides how mysterious it is. It was actually created by another Outer God named Azathoth. Azathoth is also known as the Blind Idiot God (cruel, I know) and is currently dreaming of our entire universe, our everything, right now. When he wakes, we don’t.
Pretty terrifying. And we can already draw comparisons between these two Darknesses— mysterious, and no one knows anything about them. Done.
Nyctelios and Atheon: This one took me a while, but it made more sense the more and more I thought about it. Nyctelios is a former Elder God who was exiled, and forced into a deep abyss called Atheron (Similar, right?). He is not dead, but one day “he will wake up, 6 meters tall and covered in worms.” He is also described as cyclops like.
Not sure about the worms part, but Atheon is definitely around 6 meters, has 1 eye, and was considered an anomaly, or essentially an outcast in Vex terms. Certainly seems like enough evidence to assume the connection between the two.
And probably the most terrifying, possible coincidence:
Dzéwà and the Traveler: Dzéwà is a plant god that resembles a giant, white orb which hides a massive mouth and green tentacles.
The Traveler definitely does have an association with plants, and is a giant, white orb. Does that mean...?
Dzéwà also came to Earth. Same with the Traveler. There’s too many similarities.
Anyways, I can go on and on about all these Gods and Elder Things and everything that resembles Destiny lore, but I think I’ve made this post long enough.
Feel free to contribute to the list, if you wish.
Edit: I guess people don’t like the Mythos very much. Got downvoted quite a bit...
Edit 2: I take it back, couple hours later and trending? With 21 likes? A miracle has occurred.
Edit 3: Wow, we made it to the top of #Lore. Nice. I did want to clarify:
This post is meant for finding similarities between Destiny Characters and a select couple of Cthulhu Mythos Gods. By no means am I saying they are the same being, or if the Destiny characters are even largely inspired by Lovecraft. I am also not saying that these are the only connections, these are just the ones I had thought of and able to fit into a post without making it too long.
Hope that clears it up.
