How does the Infinite Forest work?

I cannot locate a reply of what my ghost says the first time we fly to Mercury. It somewhat explained what the Infinite Forest did. I am curious what is official lore in the Destiny 2 universe. To me, it sounded like three things... (a) Similar to the novel Anathem, each choice someone makes creates a new "branch" in the multiverse of possibilities. (b) Similar to the webcomic Planetary, a sufficiently advanced computer can use these choices to explore different possible futures with supernatural efficiency, performing calculations along an infinity of different branches simultaneously. (c) Similar to both those other stories, a uniquely special computer has some kind of physical ties to the multiverse: it not only observes alternate possible future states, but when its computational processing concludes it can somehow direct how the "collapsing" of states happens so that its own reality matches the desired future. In other words, it not only predicts the future, it predetermines it. Is that what we are preventing in Curse of Osiris? Obligatory cool scene from Planetary: http://bp1.blogger.com/_X1D7QFmSDa0/R7BA3Cf_2vI/AAAAAAAABrQ/0uM8RJ5RxdM/s1600-h/multiverse.jpg

Create very little content - market it as lots of content - chomps buy said content - gain maximum profit vs time served - working as intended. That's the basics
