<The Infinite Forest is a reality engine. It's essentially a machine that can simulate trillions of realities at once. It is the size of Mercury's core at its base form and takes a shit ton of processing power to use.
We are trying to stop Panoptes, the "admin" of the Infinite Forest from figuring out a way to ensure the perfect Vex future. Using the Forest, it can figure out what steps need to be made to make it reality. Unfortunately, just as the plan started to come into fruition, we killed it, therefore erasing all the data on how the plan to make the perfect Vex future would work.>

You would’ve thought that with the Almighty breaking the planet apart the Infinite Forest would be exposed, why do we need to bother with being able to go through the portal, am I wrong in saying we couldn’t just drop in?
-
You'd think the Vex would have a failsafe for that kind of thing.
-
That’s the problem, they don’t. They can’t simulate Light.
-
They can simulate the death of the ONE Vex unit holding such important data lol. Just because you cannot predict what your enemy may do next, that does not mean you don't plan ahead. If they really thought Panoptes would never die, and never prepared for that loss of data, they're pretty dumb imo.
-
Actually there was a lore entry in D1 commenting over how odd it was that the Vex compartmentalized information within greater Minds (like Panoptes) despite the risk of losing vital information of the Mind dies (like Panoptes did). The only explanation is that they determined it was worth the risk They most certainly did anticipate the possible death of Panoptes, but the problem with making a chain of command like theirs is that only Panoptes was equipes to carry some very specific information. All the information he had is still within the Infinite Forest, but without him there’s not a Vex that can put all that information together and make sense of it

The more ppl on the forum teach me about the Vex, the more I'm convinced that they probably won't survive the test of time.
-
<Just wait until the Warrior Vex come in...>
-
NOW you've got my attention
-
<I'm assuming that the other two Hive Gods, Xivu Arath and Savathûn, will die. This means that the Hive as a species will be totally destabilized. That means there is nothing to stop the Vex from killing them... Killing them all.>
-
By that point, wouldn't the Armada be here?
-
<Yeah but if we let the Vex do their job then we have one less thing to worry about.>
-
In our defense, they are trying to kill us too. Unless you know something I don't, then idk.
-
<The Vex are very neutral, they may help in the fight against the Dark.>
-
Do you think the Vex would welcome humanity if they wanted to be converted?
-
Tell that to the trillions of other realities that they live in, many of which do not hold the same challenges for them or they have already won. The Vex are always growing; always spreading. Even if you have the neigh omnipotent power of someone like Oryx you couldn’t possibly exterminate every trace of them from space and time because there will always be another place, another time, another alternative where they exist. Even if you were some divine multiverse-destroying entity, Destiny appears to follow the infinite-possibility timeline structure, meaning that there will always be a timeline where you never attacked them Of course, that’s if you believe that theory. If not, there’s still in-game evidence that the Vex can’t even be erased completely from that one existence. They have structures ingrained in worlds across the universe and still are always growing and adapting. They can be beaten, but never eliminated Honestly I love the Vex so much. If u want more lore on them I’ve got some lore posts I can link u to
-
If they can exist across trillions of time lines successfully, there are realities where they've been eradicated. It only seems impossible right now because it hasn't happened, but even they will die eventually. They really aren't that interesting to me tbh. Panoptes and Quria were the only Vex units I found interest in.
-
Hmmm. You’re right, the odds that there’s a timeline where they’ve been eradicated are very high, although we don’t have proof wether it’s possible either way Yeah I get why a lot of people don’t like the Vex that much; the little lore Bungie has come up with for them just seems really generic unless you have a taste for the kind of mysteries and possibilities that surround them (#me). Quria is my favorite, but I prefer Atheon over Panoptes because they’re exactly the same in every way except Atheon controls actual reality instead of simulated reality. Outside of them, I like Theosian and the whole Gate Lord system is cool. My favorite part about them overall is that they are thinkers and builders more than warriors, it’s really unique
-
I think they're misused as enemies tbh. The fact we haven't met a single faction that isn't trying to eradicate everything in an effort for conversion seems wild to me. They almost seem like gardeners at times. They have interesting inner workings, but are overall just boring in their ultimate goal and the way they go about doing things. Like you mentioned, Gate Lord system and the Vault of Glass or the Infinite Forest is cool, ex exceptionally cool. The way they sorta brute force things is just a bit....untoward imo. I don't like the way they destroyed Mercury, and I don't see why they have to eradicate life. Their only fear is what they cannot predict reliably? That's a little, idk, pathetic. Most living organisms deal with that and keep at it, you know? The Cabal and Fallen still manage to permanently kill Guardians at times. Vex in writing are more fascinating to me though.
They almost seem like gardeners at times.
Funny you said that, because the community has been comparing them to gardeners for a long time. Yeah it started out with people being like “oh hey Black Garden has flowers they must be gardeners” but the more we learn about them the more we realize it’s true
Yeah brute force doesn’t seem like something they would do, but clearly they’ve determined that it usually works. As for the destroying life, we actually have proof from Venus and Mercury that they only kill threats to their system, everything else just kind of dies from exposure because the Vex are a contagion. At least they catalogue everything so nothing is forgotten m
Their only fear is what they cannot predict reliably? That's a little, idk, pathetic. Most living organisms deal with that and keep at it, you know?
Well when you think about it, most humans are terrified of things they don’t understand or things they can’t predict. Many people get stressed thinking about the future. All of our fears are things that we hope WON’T happen, and most of the time have never happened to us at all. And when we see something that looks scary or weird we tend to assume it is as it appears. And even if we do know what it is we’re looking at, if we don’t know what it wants or what it will do it can frighten us. The Vex actually do deal with it and try to conquer it just like humans, they problem is that they’re more like computers. When a computer encounters an error it shuts down, while a person looks for a creative way around. Now the Vex don’t shut down when they hit an error, but when they look for another way around they’re more limited to what they already know As for killing Guardians, the Vex probably have the highest kill count aside from the Fallen (that’s only because the Fallen were always the present threat on Earth). Remember the Sunbreaker mission in TTK? More Guardians slaughtered in one place than we’ve seen in most places in-game or even in the lore (excluding large battles like the Twilight Gap)
-
I guess what I'm trying to say is they just seem weird and are represented is an incredibly boring fashion in-game, and what seems to be their ultimate goal is just plain boring. To me, it seems like they would have actually helped us during the Collapse rather than convert and somewhat destroy. I could see why they'd fear Guardians, but I still feel like them being unable to simulate Light shouldn't matter. They should still be fine, but from what I've learned, they seem to lack the ability to deal effectively with a plan gone wrong more than most everyone else in the Destiny franchise. I also don't really care for the aesthetic design of them. Their frames (barring Minotaurs and Harpies) seem inefficient. But eh, the Hive are also my favorite faction so maybe the Vex just don't appeal to me as enemies
-
I see what you’re saying. The Vex really are like the boring version of the Hive lol. In lore they’re made out to be terrifyingly powerful but in-game they’re considered a pathetic threat GASP! I love their designs! All the Vex are built for construction work actually, it describes how in their old grimoire cards. It makes it obvious why they always seem so clumsy and slow in battle I love the Hive as much as I love the Vex. Legions of undying warriors and scholars who feed on violence and view death as the expression of truth and love? Heck yeah they’re awesome
-
If I were a Guardian and didn't know anything of the Vex and randomly encountered a Goblin or Hobgoblin, I honestly couldn't see myself shooting first. They don't look like they'd shoot first. Minotaurs, however, I'd want to be ready or as far away as possible. It makes sense that really only supernatural beings could deal with a Minotaur. Harpies are pretty cool as a concept. I loved the Gorgons. I do enjoy the lore surrounding Radiolaria, and how it can be a liquid, solid or gaseous form, I think? That is pretty cool. The Hive, I feel, are a perfect enemy. They know no such thing as restraint, mercy or hesitation. They do feel and but in an almost opposite way that makes sense once you've read the books of sorrow. I never get tired of them.
If I were a Guardian and didn't know anything of the Vex and randomly encountered a Goblin or Hobgoblin, I honestly couldn't see myself shooting first. They don't look like they'd shoot first.
I wouldn’t shoot first just cuz I’m curious and also a bit of a pacifist lol. I’d totally try communicating
Harpies are pretty cool as a concept. I loved the Gorgons.
Gorgons are wicked. Not only do they look cool, but they make no noise aside from those little beeping radar noises, which is prefect for how you’re supposed to be dead quiet in the Maze to hide from them. I have a Destiny fanfic I post in Gallery and I’m currently writing a Vault chapter with the Gorgons and LOVING it
I do enjoy the lore surrounding Radiolaria, and how it can be a liquid, solid or gaseous form, I think? That is pretty cool.
It doesn’t have a gaseous form, that wouldn’t work with since there are microorganisms in it anyway. It’s neat how radiolaria is clearly such a huge part of the Vex but we hardly know a thing about it, especially seeing how it’s the most infective agent of the Vex we’ve encountered so far
The Hive, I feel, are a perfect enemy. They know no such thing as restraint, mercy or hesitation. They do feel and but in an almost opposite way that makes sense once you've read the books of sorrow. I never get tired of them.
Definitely the perfect enemy. So alike yet so different from the Guardians and serving the will of the Light’s greatest enemy. I’m so into the BoS I can tell you all of it from memory lol. It has one of my favorite Destiny quotes: “My sword is named Willbreaker, but it did not break you.”

I guess the Vex just don't make sense as enemies to me. Everyone else? They earned our ire, but the Vex are weird. It doesn't seem personal.

Well no, the data was not lost. The future was predicated on the Infinite Forest, which is now under the watchful eye of Osiris rather than under Vex control. Therefore the future cannot exist.
