Edited by D2_Dahaka_PAL: 11/17/2018 7:52:57 AMWhether they are gambling or not, games with loot boxes and microtransactions use the same physclogical manipulation techniques to encourage players to spend more. It’s predatory and has no place in easily accessible video games in people’s homes or mobile devices. This practice is slowly killing gaming and only exists to serve the real customers of big publishers...the shareholders. I’ve worked as a developer in the gaming industry for years (slot machines) and it has always baffled me why these kinds of praactices by video game publishers have never been challenged. It has been like the wild west and though it’s late, I’m glad something is finally happening.

3 RepliesNo point to discussing an asinine poll. Especially one that doesn't even have the correct answer.
-
Since there’s zero chance of losing your “wager,” by definition they are not. You get exactly what you paid for. Every. Single. Time.
-
17 RepliesSome governments have said so, which may be irrelevant, but I have to agree. That said, you can’t have a poll with only one choice. Are you a Democrat, or do you work for CNN?
-
They're the gaming equivalent of LOL dolls.
-
Depends what your definition of lootbox is. Destiny 2 has lootboxes in the form of bundles and those tell you what you get inside them.
-
110% yes 👍🏻 Thank god they've slowly being banned/forcing some laws to catch up to the digital age.

1 ReplyBiased poll is very biased

i don't understand why games have these. why do they not just give you the ability to buy whatever you want through microtransactions if you are willing to spend the money on it. i mean, if i want Darth Maul, i want Darth Maul, yes, i know i paid full price for the game, and i know yes, progressing to that point will take me ages, but like most people with money i throw money at everything and the problem seems to go away. so if i want my shit in a game that i already paid full price for, then i am glad to buy it. off the Black Market. because Diamonds are forever.
did i get everything? - LOL
-
Yup but they shouldnt be banned

lootboxes are gambling beyond gambling so i dont do it but luckily for me i dont have money to do that stuff although i dont see why they dont just put some protection on loot you already have kinda like xur's fated engram except it doesn't cost 97 legendary shards
-
Yep, I would say they are. It's good that they aren't really significant in Destiny though. Most AAA games are far worse.

Edited by Kanashimi510: 11/17/2018 12:33:23 AMIf it's a random reward (you don't choose the exact item you want to pay for) then I say it's crossing that thin line over to "yes". Bungie hired John Hopson in 2001 (Head of User Research). He holds a Ph.D. in Behavioral and Brain Sciences from Duke University and is/was the chairman of the IGDA Games User Research SIG. (Not sure if current chairman) Mixing Behavioral Psychology with cash transactions, and also making those transactions "range based drops" is predatory. Especially since the rng in the normal parts of the game have always been debated as unfair/fair. Pairing this with the patent Activision has filed concerning microtransactions, and also not being able to select exactly what you want to buy seems even more sketchy. Just in the way of proof they can/will manipulate the game around cash purchases if they feel like it. There is too much behind the scenes manipulation that can go on with the way the developers handle these types of transactions, and there is too much for the game developers to gain for the players to feel completely comfortable with blind loot boxes. Edit/additional: Your poll is biased. I personally would have rather seen what everyone else actually thought as opposed to this.

1 ReplyThis is a really weird pee pee poll...

I'll play Devil's Advocate. No... As long as they implement the knockout list, you're guaranteed an item you didn't have which makes it a purchase. Weapons in loot boxes would be a no go. If they were underpowered, you got ripped off. If they were OP, it would be pay to win and the forums would burn hotter than Hell.

3 RepliesNot as far as i'm concerned. They are virtual cosmetics, and no one is forcing you to buy anything. If you can't resist a virtual cosmetic item, you have bigger problems than gambling.

I don’t think so, some games are incredibly bad and take it too far, but I don’t think so here.
