Fallout 76 is probably the most depressing Fallout I have played.

But not because it's online only and there are no human NPCs. If you actually pay attention and read the terminals, notes and listen to the audio logs, we finally get a glimpse of what life was like right after the bombs fell. Maybe Fallout 1 and 2 also show this, but I have never played those games. Do not let the randoms people on the internet spout baseless hate that there is no story. There is a story and so far after 3 hours is feels like any other story, but no NPCs. I do feel like it would have been better as a traditional Bethesda single player RPG, but that doesn't mean it is a bad game. The people who compare this to No Man's Sky have clearly not played the game or took minute to interact with the game beyond just killing stuff. I have found myself actually wanting to keep doing the story quests and avoiding the multi-player aspect when I can. I think if Bethesda instead went the GTAV and RDR2 route and make a single player game and THEN have an online element would have been better, but that would probably take a lot of time and resources away from making Starfield. So in conclusion, it's not the best game, but by no means is it a bad game.

  • I hate online shared world games, I hate survival mechanics, I hate games without a decent story and characters. Everything about this game says “don’t buy”. And yet I’m really tempted to get it because it’s Fallout and I love Fallout.

    • It's weird that the gameplay is pretty much what I was doing in destiny with better loot, better perks and some actual backstory.

I struggle to play most AAA games because because the storytelling bores me to tears. But bogging your story down in a boat load of diary entries is not interesting at all. It's generic, repetitive, and lazy.

      • I am so disappointed. I didn't buy the game but I paid close attention to others who were playing the beta. It could have been and should have been so much better. Making it an empty survival game was one mess up. Sure it's more fun with friends but after a while even your friends start to get frustrated and bored. Imagine if they went with a story, quests that you could play with friends? They didn't have to have servers with up to 24 other players on it. They could have gone with a peer to peer like bordelands did, or have public areas where you could team up and work together with public events too. Even with those other options, the game breaking bugs... so many bugs. I was hoping it would be good.

        • I really enjoy the atmosphere. The lack of human NPC's really hits the mark that we're in a post apocalyptic world, struggling to survive. When you're exploring, you'll come across holotapes and hear people as their own story plays out. The troubles that they face, and their ultimate demise. You'll see the remains eventually. Imagine a game where you're the chosen one, and you have to prepare for the upcoming battle. You'll travel the land, saving people and befriending them so they'll assist you in the final act. You'll all come together to finally push back the evil threat and save the day. Yet, no chosen one comes forward. Nobody stops the scorch from killing off the Responders. Nobody saves the Brotherhood from its fate. The people in their own bunkers... They eventually die because no one was around to save them. We arrived too late.

        • Fallout 76 is telling it's story through hollow tapes and the world space. if you pay attention to the environments you're in they're far more detailed and full of things..even if it's a blown up part of an abandoned city. or a ghost town. Fall out 4 was a departure on many levels but the more insulting bit of it was how it tried to stick to the roots but in a half assed way. (I.E on rails dialogue, simplified dialogue options, rails story, etc.) 76 took the best aspects from 4 and decided to go a different route entirely. Weather or not this way pulls off or crashes and burns is yet to be seen. But it's a decent game. if not a bit more terrible compared to past games just based on technical issues alone.

            • I would say it's a bad game. On one hand it's a technical mess, on the other it's a derivative fetch quest. I genuinely can't see how it could be labeled as a good game.

I don't know, I would've spent more time playing it, but I got stuck at an Infinite loading screen. I started it back up, and it thankfully saved the stuff I just found. Started fighting some other enemies them I got to one with a hatchet, I killed him, then about five seconds later I hear the hatchet melee animation and I'm dead. I turned off the game after that. I don't think I can play it until they do something about the connection. If they get the connection problems dealt with, it's something I'll play occasionally. It's not the worst game ever, but it most definitely needs improvement.

From the sounds of it all, this game may have been better off as a book... or a tell-tale series. I sincerely hope that this game isn't set at the current full-price and is sitting at most around the $40 (CN) mark.

                  • It’s just not for me. I want NPCs, story, companions, and preexisting factions that I can interact with, learn about, and make decisions that permanently affect those things throughout my game. I’m sure people that like online co-op only games will really enjoy it.

What's the point of these quests when you know up front they lead to a corpse every time? Other Fallout games already had stories from letters and computers. There's nothing new there, but they had NPC's in addition to that. Fallout 76 is just an overblown downgrade.
So in conclusion, it's not the best game, but by no means is it a bad game.
That's hardly a glowing review. Basically it's a "meh" game, which is a disappointment for most Fallout fans.

                      • I agree, i've been enjoying playing some of it so far exploring and following the story at my own pace, it is a bit depressing seeing all these terminal entries and things from survivors before finding their corpses. I've still barely engaged with any other players at this point though and still feel it would've been better as a Borderlands style co-op rather than multiplayer only with no npcs.

Should’ve just been an optional co-op game, not a bunch of people thrown into a map together.

                          • Sounds like you never read the terminals in Honest Hearts in NV. It followed a man who lost his wife and son from the bombs, settled in Zion and watched new settlers come in, get killed and eaten, and then killed all the new people, and then died.

                            • I usually don't take the time to read most of the notes and terminal entries in Fallout 76 because I get the feeling there'll be an enemy I possibly missed during a fight and I don't want to get snuck up on while I'm reading. This is even worse when I'm at a crafting bench outside and suddenly I'm getting attacked, especially with that bug where it brings you back into the crafting bench after you chose to leave it.

                              • Ya know. It's just ''Fallout the live service'' It's also not of a quality on then same length as Fallout New Vegas, witch I bet is what all those people who say ''Not Fallout'' seek in a Fallout game. I can't speak for everyone but I bet that's one of the core issues. If you're happy with it fine. It's a wasted effort trying to disovle the hatrid some or most people have for what it is.

I've probably got about 10 hours into it (lvl 10). I know I assumed no NPCs would = lifeless world but I was open to see how they'd do it. So far I actually think my assumption is right. There's just baddies that are around and even other players can be rare to see unless they're too doing the same stuff as you. As for no dialogue: I'm not bothered by it. If someone's more into old school rpgs, this really shouldn't be a big turn off to them, that said with how mainstream everything is these days I'm not surprised to see no dialogue bother people. I myself would've liked to at least get text dialogue in place, but I can handle silence from the protagonist. I've been having fun with the game, the only issues I have is the lifeless world, the bugs (but this is Bethesda after all, at least 76 shares the biggest similarity among all their games) and the inventory management can be so bad at times. Unfortunately I haven't been trying to read the notes cause I've been having issues reading smaller text in games for a while even with glasses. I can still read the terminals but I've had to just open notes and close them to trigger quests, I'd imagine I'm missing out on a lot of stories/lore told through them as a result. That right there is what I've always considered as Bethesda strength and I bet 76 is no different, I'd even bets it's probably even better because of them not having to split some of that work into npcs and such, so I'm probably missing out on the best part of the game. The crafting seems to be at it's best yet, the combat can be wonky but should be engaging enough, and there's a lot to explore. I'll also say I've had absolutely no server troubles AT ALL day one or day 2, which I give credit for how they ran the beta even if how they did it annoyed people. You get much better results imitating the release by timing the betas at certain hours of a day over running it nonstop for a week. It's probably the most effective beta I've seen in a while. Now that it's out, I'd assume it can only get better. I'm not surprised to see it getting review bombed, that asanine approach won't go away till they get people to delete it. It's dumb cause much of those 0s don't even give an explanation and people do it over the smallest things. Recently RTW2 got bombed over female generals, is that one aspect alone enough to give a 0? Well here in 76 you have people saying "not fallout" which is so vague it can't be taken seriously. Furthermore one element of a game shouldn't drag the entire thing down, I can get docking a point or 2 for it, but the entire thing? I'm sorry but that's not an honest review and that's why even the user base can be just as bad as the professional reviewers.
