AP: Expert: Acosta video distributed by White House was doctored

Womp womp woooooomp https://apnews.com/c575bd1cc3b1456cb3057ef670c7fe2a NEW YORK (AP) — A video distributed by the Trump administration to support its argument for banning CNN reporter Jim Acosta from the White House appears to have been doctored to make Acosta look more aggressive than he was during an exchange with a White House intern, an independent expert said Thursday. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted the video, which shows Acosta asking President Donald Trump a question on Wednesday as the intern tries to take his microphone away. But a frame-by-frame comparison with an Associated Press video of the same incident shows that the one tweeted by Sanders appears to have been altered to speed up Acosta’s arm movement as he touches the intern’s arm, according to Abba Shapiro, an independent video producer who examined the footage at AP’s request. Earlier, Shapiro noticed that frames in the tweeted video were frozen to slow down the action, allowing it to run the same length as the AP one. The tweeted video also does not have any audio, which Shapiro said would make it easier to alter. It’s also unlikely the differences could be explained by technical glitches or by video compression — a reduction in a video’s size to enable it to play more smoothly on some sites — because the slowing of the video and the acceleration that followed are “too precise to be an accident,” said Shapiro, who trains instructors to use video editing software. Sanders, who hasn’t said where the tweeted video came from, noted that it clearly shows Acosta made contact with the intern. In her statement announcing Acosta’s suspension, she said the White House won’t tolerate “a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job.” While the origin of the manipulated video is unclear, its distribution marked a new low for an administration that has been criticized for its willingness to mislead. The White House News Photographers Association decried the sharing of the footage. “As visual journalists, we know that manipulating images is manipulating truth,” said Whitney Shefte, the association’s president. “It’s deceptive, dangerous and unethical. Knowingly sharing manipulated images is equally problematic, particularly when the person sharing them is a representative of our country’s highest office with vast influence over public opinion.” CNN has labeled Sanders’ characterization of Acosta’s exchange with the intern as a lie. Its position has been supported by witnesses including Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason, who was next to Acosta during the news conference and tweeted that he did not see Acosta place his hands on the White House employee. Rather, he said he saw him holding on to the microphone as she reached for it. “The irony of this White House video involving Jim Acosta is that if it is found to be doctored, it will show the administration to be doing what it accuses the news media of doing — engaging in fake information,” said Aly Colon, a professor in journalism ethics at Washington & Lee University. Several journalists and organizations — including the American Society of News Editors, the Associated Press Media Editors and the Online News Association — demanded Acosta’s press pass be reinstated. “It is the essential function of a free press in every democracy to independently gather and report information in the public interest, a right that is enshrined in the First Amendment,” said Julie Pace, AP’s Washington bureau chief. “We strongly reject the idea that any administration would block a journalist’s access to the White House.” The New York Times editorialized in favor of restoring Acosta’s pass, saying it signaled Trump’s view that asking hard questions disqualifies reporters from attending briefings. The newspaper said that if Sanders was so offended by physical contact, “what did she have to say when her boss praised as ‘my kind of guy’ Rep. Greg Gianforte of Montana, who was sentenced to anger management classes and community service for body-slamming a Guardian reporter last spring?” CNN has been a frequent target of the president, who has characterized journalists as enemies of the people and who routinely accuses the mainstream media of spreading “fake news.” And Acosta has been one of the more visible thorns in the side of the White House. During their verbal altercation on Wednesday, Trump called Acosta a “terrible person.” Still, it’s rare for the White House to pull the so-called hard passes from journalists. During Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, the Secret Service denied clearance to Robert Sherrill, a reporter for The Nation who had gotten into physical fights with government officials. During the George W. Bush presidency, Trude Feldman, who worked for various news outlets, was suspended for 90 days after security cameras recorded her looking through a press aide’s desk late one night. In the 1970s, President Nixon tried to get Washington Post reporters banned from the White House. Despite losing his White House pass, Acosta is expected to travel to Paris this weekend to cover Trump’s trip to meet with world leaders.

  • Here is Tim Pool using CNN footage of the incident. The entire video is quite informative but the actual incident is addressed at 5:20 https://youtu.be/N2LH150Scpc Obviously Mr Acosta pushed the intern's arm away with his wrist. Very rude behavior. It's not his microphone. He had his turn, it was someone else's turn and he was hogging a mic that wasn't his property. Saying that he "never laid a hand on her" is insincere. Technically correct. He did push her away with his wrist. CNN will be better off with a more professional reporter for that job. Let Acosta be an anchor or better yet, pundit.

    • I watched it live. Didnt need a recap to know he's getting suspended for unprofessional behaviour. He was on thin-ice already for interrupting, other journalists as well. Being disrespectful and making spectacles of himself.

inb4 "fake news" "this is a liberal conspiracy created by george soros" "cnn is fake news" "acosta is a lunatic" "acosta is a chomo" "cry more liberal tears" Edit: Someone will most likely post one of those things later on down the road. As for my take on it: I saw two of my friends share it. Both do videography on a part-time hobby level, but even they said that it was doctored.

Can you post the ‘raw’ footage vs ‘doctored’? I googled the clip and there’s plenty of YouTube videos of them slowed down and everything. Honestly- I can’t tell any meaningful difference between them. The twitter one is a little blurry but that’s about it, it doesn’t seem more aggressive or anything imo. In both videos it just looks like he’s making a gesture and she reached into it. He was stubborn about holding the mic but she was trying to forcefully take it so... So pathetic this is even news- both sides. Trump is a complete idiot but ‘the left’ literally goes on ridiculous witch hunt type shit and doesn’t even criticize his policies aside from very very shallow discussions on like immigration or something. Hey news flash lefties- you’re literally the ones responsible for Trumps popularity. They don’t love Trump so much as they hate you and your bullshit.

            • I dont' know if its been doctored. The reality is in that the WH isn't the only source of information for the vast majority of people.....so the truth is known. The real issues here are: 1. Trump acting like a petulant child because the Press has stopped treating him like a china doll, and was subjecting him to the kind of tough questions he should have been confronted with during 2016 campaign. 2. Trump spitefully pulling the press credentials of a veteran member of the WH press corps. 3. Trump CYNICALLY doing it because he knows that the news of his doing it would dominate the news cycle, rather then the history HAMMERING that he---and the GOP----took in the mid-terms on Tuesday. As well as the implications of installing a partisan hack as Acting Attorney General, whose public statements on the Mueller investigation represent a MASSIVE conflict of interest at best....and probably more evidence of obstruction of justice in reality.

              • This was so shady that even conservatives have called out Sanders for pushing false story that Acosta "assaulted" intern. For instance, Been Shapiro, conservative blogger and former Breitbart editor, tweeted this didn't happen. Now you know this has to be a completely outrageous lie for someone from Brietbart, of all places, to call out someone from this administration.

              • Yeah, I'm gonna need more than one guy claiming it to really buy it. The guy who posted the video said the only editing was shrinking or something along those lines and the stuff shown in the AP's video isn't super convincing that it's not just an affect of what the Watson guy did to it to share. Either way, he did what was claimed and put his hands on her to stop her from taking the mic. It's not assault or anything ridiculous like that, it's just him reacting to someone reaching in. I'm not seeing what the big issue is here though, it's one annoying guy getting his pass revoked so just send someone in his place that's not as annoying. He's as big of a dbag as Trump, which is funny because he works for a company that loves to condemn Trump for being a dbag.

              • I dont know enough about Acosta to really pass comment on his personage, but this whole stance taken by the White House is straight up embarassing. Want to ban him for unprofessional conduct? Then do so, dont make up the most pussyish, hand-wringing bullshit story possible. I thought it was supposed to be the Lefties who were the Snowflakes?! 😂

              • I mean, all the videos I saw showed him just kind of push her slightly. Never looked overly violent, or intentionally malicious. I personally despise Acosta, as he seems like an attention vulture, more focused on fame then reporting accurately. However, this was not a violent assault.
